Background / History

Founding the World Government

Imu is identified as one of the “First Twenty” who founded the World Government eight hundred years earlier. He and the kings were allies in overthrowing Joy Boy, but Imu subsequently killed and devoured them, retaining their remnant souls within his body 169 568.

He preserved their descendants as Celestial Dragons for a concealed purpose: their bloodlines could suppress the kings’ souls and allow him to consume them completely. Their centuries of privilege were therefore part of a long-term plan, not simply a reward for their ancestry. Imu intended to wait roughly another decade before completing the process, but the Uchiha offensive forced him to act early 568.

Throughout his reign, Imu remained wary of the Rain God, Thunder God, Forest God, and Sun God associated with Joy Boy’s will. He nevertheless regarded successive rebels, Sun God Fruit awakeners, and bearers of the Will of D as predictable challengers who never escaped the order he controlled 175 352.

God Valley

Garp witnessed Imu defeat Rocks at God Valley. Rocks—whom Roger and Garp had struggled to suppress together—lasted less than half an hour against him. Garp also recalled nearly dying against a vessel possessed by Imu, distinguishing that encounter from facing Imu’s complete body 170.

Appearance

  • Initial combat appearance: Wears a cloak bearing an ancient “Contract” emblem, loose wide-legged trousers, spiked bracers, and pointed black leather shoes. An enormous black ring covered with eyes floats behind him 169.
  • Eyes: Scarlet, almond-shaped eyes with rings around the pupils and concentric patterns within the irises 171 568.
  • Half-demon form: Additional thick horns, a pointed black goatee, blackened arms, vast leathery wings, an arrow-tipped tail, and eye-covered rings wound around his body 517 518.
  • Complete demon form: An enormous winged body large enough to blot out the sky 550.
  • True body: Three meters tall, fair-skinned, and slender, with vivid red hair reaching his waist. Once restored, his weapons hover around him within a quiet halo of dark-red Demonic Energy 568 570.

Personality

Imu ordinarily maintains a cold, restrained manner and expects unquestioned obedience. Even the Five Elders bow deeply and soften their breathing in his presence. He treats his authority as absolute and regards most opponents as expendable pieces within an order he has arranged 352 446.

His arrogance is tempered by considerable patience and self-preservation. He refuses to pursue Natsu when he senses a potentially fatal hidden power, recognizes an attempt to bait him into exposing Uranus, and accepts a prolonged standoff rather than gamble his life 352 353 487.

Losing control of that order exposes a much less composed side. When Uranus fails to respond, he repeatedly pours energy into its scepter, screams commands, and descends into panic. His treatment of the kings and their descendants also shows that centuries of service or shared ancestry offer no protection when he needs nourishment or power 551 552 568.

Abilities & Skills

Haki

  • Conqueror’s Haki: Sweeps across Marineford, incapacitating large numbers of soldiers and forcing powerful combatants to resist its pressure. Natsu and more than twenty Uchiha clansmen eventually combine their wills to suppress it 170 171.
  • Armament Haki: Coats his ancient polearm alongside Conqueror’s Haki during his clash with Susanoo 169.
  • Observation Haki: Anticipates attack trajectories and warns him of a fatal threat whenever he considers approaching Origin Island. Madara’s gravitational techniques initially fall outside his experience 487 524.

Demonic Energy

A power explicitly distinguished from both Haki and Devil Fruit power during the Summit War 171.

  • Forms blades, spears, shields, barriers, and entire arrays of weapons from darkness 499 503 506 568.
  • Devours vitality and erodes a living being’s essence 508.
  • Suppresses healing: the energy left in Natsu’s abdominal wound restrains his Yang Release and slows Ōkuninushi’s regeneration 189.
  • Supports aerial movement, including walking through empty space on ripples of energy 570.
  • Can be exhausted; firing Uranus consumes a substantial portion of Imu’s essential power 535.

Devil Fruit and Transformations

Imu possesses a forbidden Devil Fruit, though its name and exact classification are not supplied. Natsu notes that Imu did not fully reveal its abilities or alternate forms during their first battle 169 332.

  • Half-human, half-demon form: Described at its introduction as his strongest form, combining physical power, defense, and speed 518.
  • Complete demon form: Provides enough force to shatter Madara’s reinforced Chibaku Tensei prison 550.
  • True body restoration: Reveals that his previous changing bodies were influenced by the kings’ remnant souls. Consuming those souls ends their interference and restores his original appearance 568.

Deep-Sea Contracts and Control

God's Knights operate directly under Imu and are described as being under the absolute control of his power 154.

  • Contract-linked abilities are said to include immortality-like survival and long-range teleportation 154.
  • Imu senses Killingham’s death and recognizes him as the second Deep-Sea Contract signatory to fall, after Gunko 487.
  • Rules imposed on God's Knights remain active after Imu’s apparent death, preventing the surviving knights from retreating 555.

Twenty Kings’ Arsenal

Imu awakens and controls the weapons left by the original rulers through Demonic Energy 508 511.

  • Coordinates their timing, angles, and speed into continuous multidirectional attacks 534 535.
  • Uses weapons capable of cutting space, piercing mountains, and carrying curses 524 534 535.
  • His arsenal is not indestructible: Madara damages and scatters the weapons with Super Shinra Tensei and later shatters his final defense with Susanoo 535 554.
  • Eleven weapons accompany his restored true body 570.

Rule-Based Attacks and Origin Power

In his true body, Imu’s attacks affect the rules governing the space occupied by a target rather than merely striking its surface. He claims that the seas’ rules are part of him 571 572.

  • Corrodes Susanoo’s chakra structure and interrupts its circulation, leaving damage that ordinary chakra replenishment cannot repair 571.
  • The Void Sword erases a section of Susanoo’s chest without leaving a conventional slash mark 571.
  • Resists Madara’s attempt to force him down to Super-Kage Level; Madara instead switches to direct physical combat 572.
  • Seals the Origin power consumed from the kings behind eight internal chains, releasing only part of it to sustain his true body 573.
  • Breaking two chains triggers a worldwide tug on Devil Fruit users’ Origin. The passage shows a powerful user suppressing the disturbance with Haki, so the effect is not uniformly irresistible 573.

Eclipse Blitz

  • Unleashes countless demonic fireballs after Imu manifests Demon Wings and the Twenty Kings’ weapons 511.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Heaven’s Punishment Sword / Heavenly Punishment Blade — Long-handled divine weapon used to pierce Natsu’s abdomen and deliver regeneration-suppressing Demonic Energy 189 332.
  • Xingtian Axe — Royal weapon whose edge can sever space; used to counterattack while Madara pulls him in with Banshō Ten’in 524 534.
  • Muramasa and Honebami Tōshirō — Blades used in coordinated attacks carrying sinister, curse-like power 535.
  • Other named royal weapons — Void Sword, Sea God Sword, Demon Grudge Sword, Wrath Sword, Sacred Decree Spear, and Chaos Sword 564 570.
  • Uranus — A space-based weapon over a thousand meters in size. Its attack disintegrates Madara’s meteor from within, but operating it drains Imu heavily 535 552 554.
  • Uranus Scepter — A short black staff with ancient patterns and a gemstone tip, stored inside Imu’s body. It stops responding after Natsu neutralizes Uranus 551 552 553 554.
  • Black cube and crystal sphere — Produces the cube while considering Uranus, then conceals it; later manifests a crystal sphere before deploying the weapon against the meteor 351 352 521.
  • Old system beneath Mary Geoise — An additional reserve he hesitates to activate because of the destruction it would cause 536.

Relationships

  • Uchiha Natsu — Enemy and strategic equal. Natsu’s unfamiliar hidden power makes Imu abandon pursuit and reconsider his assumption of invincibility 352.
  • Madara Uchiha — Direct opponent in the Sabaody battle. Imu acknowledges him as the first living being in eight hundred years to force him into full-strength close combat 506.
  • The Five Elders — Subordinates who implement his military and political decrees. He ultimately drains their remaining life force and Demonic Energy 446 487 568.
  • God's Knights — Contract-bound enforcers under his direct authority. Their loyalty does not prevent him from consuming them during his restoration 154 564 568.
  • The Twenty Kings — Former allies turned victims. Their remnant souls struggle within him until he uses their descendants’ bloodlines to suppress and devour them 568.
  • Joy Boy — Ancient adversary whose will remains a source of unease. Even a dying remnant soul’s unfinished warning about Joy Boy briefly interrupts Imu’s composure 175 568.
  • Shanks — Has previously seen Imu behind a door in Mary Geoise, under the Five Elders’ supervision, and recognizes the difference between his former presence and restored body 570.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Summit War

Imu confronts Natsu at Marineford and is knocked backward by a Sage Chakra-enhanced Susanoo slash without suffering a wound. After the Uchiha combine their Conqueror’s Haki against him, he escalates to Demonic Energy 169 170 171.

The final exchange leaves both combatants injured: Natsu’s giant wooden fist punches through Imu’s chest, while Imu pierces Natsu’s abdomen. Imu returns bleeding to the Flower Room and orders the Navy out of the West Blue, replacing direct pressure with CP0 intelligence gathering 179 189.

Natsu later judges that Imu had withheld major weapons and Devil Fruit forms. Imu’s own recollection reveals a different limit: he stopped pursuing because Natsu’s dormant power warned him that continuing could kill them both 332 352.

Standoff with Origin Island

Imu refuses Natsu’s attempt to bait him into revealing Uranus through Madara’s battle with Kaido. Both rulers wait for the other to commit first 352 353.

To counter Uchiha expansion, he orders a living clansman captured, accelerates Vegapunk’s Seraphim research, dispatches God's Knights to court Elbaf and subdue Loki, and directs the Navy to reinforce Paradise while withdrawing from the New World 446.

Sabaody Escalation

Imu first orders Saturn to stop Madara and Garp’s battle. Killingham’s death then prompts him to dispatch the remaining four Elders and every available Marine at Headquarters 477 487.

He eventually faces Madara himself. Madara’s awakening forces him to reveal Demon Wings, the royal arsenal, and further transformations. When successive meteors threaten Mary Geoise and the Red Line, Imu uses Uranus rather than abandon the foundations of his reign 498 511 518 519 521 524.

Apparent Death and Restoration

Madara injures Imu with Super Shinra Tensei and seals him with Chibaku Tensei. Imu escapes in complete demon form, then survives suppression and immobilization long enough to attempt another Uranus strike. The weapon fails to respond, and Madara splits him in two 535 536 550 551 552 554.

His apparent death is followed by the mass draining of Celestial Dragons. Dark-red threads also consume the Five Elders and God's Knights, supplying the power he needs to overcome the kings’ rebellious souls and restore his true body 555 564 568.

True-Body Battle

Imu destroys another meteor with a spear thrust and returns to Madara with eleven weapons. Their renewed battle reaches a stalemate: Madara has the higher power level and superior attack prediction, while Imu’s rule-based weapons can erode Susanoo’s defenses 570 571 572.

Imu then releases two of the eight chains restraining his stolen Origin power. Devil Fruit users throughout the world simultaneously experience disturbances as his Demonic Energy intensifies 573.
