Background / History
Tom first contacts Muya through a mysterious diary, introducing himself as her senior and attempting to learn her identity. He is unsettled when she immediately asks about creating life-like dolls capable of holding transferred consciousness, associating the idea with Horcrux-making. 51
He later manifests as a handsome young wizard in Muya's trunk. His first response to learning that Muya had concealed her name is to attempt to kill her with the Killing Curse and Sectumsempra, but the trunk's protective magic prevents Dark Magic from functioning. Unable to leave independently or harm Muya, he accepts her offer: she will let him remain in the space to stabilize his soul, and he will provide information about the Chamber of Secrets. 58
Muya discovers that Tom is Slytherin's heir after Ginny reveals her connection to the diary. Dumbledore subsequently confirms that Tom is Voldemort, though Tom distinguishes himself from the weakened Voldemort active in the present and declares that only one Tom Riddle may exist. 61 64 66
Tom leads Muya to the Chamber of Secrets, opens its passage with Parseltongue, and commands the Basilisk. He later uses the Chamber and Muya's trunk as places to train her, at one point keeping her in the trunk while altering its internal time. 64 66 68
As his physical form stabilizes, Tom builds influence outside Hogwarts. He recruits Voldemort's followers, adopts Grindelwald's persuasive methods rather than Voldemort's arbitrary punishments, controls half of Knockturn Alley's black market, and places Theodore Nott as an informant within the Nott family. 69 94 120
Tom joins Muya and her allies in locating and neutralizing Horcruxes. He retrieves Gaunt's ring, identifies the diadem hidden in the Room of Requirement, and helps Muya use the Soul Swallower to extract soul fragments from Harry and Slytherin's locket. 112 142 159
He becomes Hogwarts' Defense Against the Dark Arts professor in Muya's fifth year, finally taking the position associated with his old curse. His teaching combines demanding examinations, practical dueling, mental-magic training, and an intimidating disciplinary style. 179 181 187 195

Personality
Tom is calculating, prideful, and exceptionally controlling. He reacts harshly to deception, initially tries to kill Muya after she lies about her identity, and later manipulates the flow of time in her trunk to keep her under his supervision and training. 58 68
He openly despises the present Voldemort, particularly the latter's appearance, weakness, and existence as another version of himself. His determination to eliminate Voldemort is rooted as much in possessiveness and pride as in opposition to the Dark Lord's actions. 58 66
Despite his cruelty, Tom develops a protective and domestic dynamic with Muya. He cooks for her and her friends, reassures her when she is frightened, provides safeguards for her travels, and acts as a mentor in combat, Dark Magic, and Legilimency. 67 94 119 166
Tom is susceptible to sincere praise of his intelligence and magical ability, though he usually hides his satisfaction behind sarcasm or a smirk. Muya's flattery is repeatedly effective when she wants information or cooperation. 159 166
