Background / History

Draco first approaches Harry Potter at Hogwarts’ Sorting Ceremony, introducing himself while insulting Ron Weasley’s family and offering to guide Harry toward “nobler” wizarding families. Harry rejects him, beginning their long-running rivalry. Draco then turns his contempt on Su Yu, using a blood-status slur after Su Yu laughs at him. 4

Initially, Draco is defined by aristocratic pride, prejudice, and a need to display his family’s importance. He boasts of being a childhood flying prodigy and treats Harry, Ron, Hagrid, and Muggle-born students as socially beneath him. 12 17 Under Su Yu’s authority in Slytherin, however, he becomes more disciplined and develops considerable magical ability, including Silent Casting. 20

His first-year scheme to expose Harry, Ron, and Neville’s nighttime dragon operation costs Gryffindor 150 points while costing Slytherin only 20. The result makes Draco a Slytherin hero, though his plan also contributes to Hermione’s injury and reveals his vindictive streak. 20

Over time, Draco becomes increasingly disillusioned with Lucius Malfoy’s manipulative methods and pure-blood extremism. Despite his arrogance, Draco is not portrayed as cowardly.
