Background / History

Loki was born the son of Laufey, King of the Frost Giants. During an earlier war between Asgard and Jotunheim, Odin found him abandoned in a Frost Giant temple, adopted him, and raised him alongside Thor as a prince of Asgard. Loki did not learn his Frost Giant heritage until adulthood, when contact with another Frost Giant revealed his icy-blue form and Odin confessed the truth. 36

Resentful of being passed over for the throne in favor of Thor, Loki secretly enabled Frost Giants to infiltrate Asgard's armory and interrupt Thor's coronation. Thor's retaliatory attack on Jotunheim led to his exile, leaving Loki as Asgard's temporary ruler after Odin collapsed into hibernation. 36

Loki then deceived Thor on Earth by falsely claiming that Odin had died and that Frigga had forbidden Thor's return. At the same time, he negotiated with Laufey: the Frost Giants would invade Asgard, Loki would supposedly repel them, and Laufey would recover the Casket of Ancient Winters. Loki intended to betray Laufey from the beginning. 34 36

When Laufey attempted to kill the sleeping Odin, Loki killed his biological father with his scepter to appear as Asgard's savior before Frigga. He subsequently seized control of the Rainbow Bridge and sent two Destroyers to Earth to eliminate Thor and those aiding him. 38 39 42

After Thor returned to Asgard, Loki attempted to annihilate Jotunheim by overloading the Rainbow Bridge's energy transmission. Thor destroyed the bridge to stop him. In the resulting explosion, Odin rescued Thor and Apocalypse but left Loki to fall into the void beneath the Cosmic Sea. 44 45

Loki later appeared at the Time Variance Authority alongside a female Loki from another timeline, where they discovered that the Time-Keepers were mechanical puppets under Kang's control. He subsequently reappeared on Earth, threatening Jane Foster and Valkyrie. 48 50
