Background / History

Loki was born the son of Laufey, King of the Frost Giants. During an earlier war between Asgard and Jotunheim, Odin found him abandoned in a Frost Giant temple, adopted him, and raised him alongside Thor as a prince of Asgard. Loki did not learn his Frost Giant heritage until adulthood, when contact with another Frost Giant revealed his icy-blue form and Odin confessed the truth. 36

Resentful of being passed over for the throne in favor of Thor, Loki secretly enabled Frost Giants to infiltrate Asgard's armory and interrupt Thor's coronation. Thor's retaliatory attack on Jotunheim led to his exile, leaving Loki as Asgard's temporary ruler after Odin collapsed into hibernation. 36

Loki then deceived Thor on Earth by falsely claiming that Odin had died and that Frigga had forbidden Thor's return. At the same time, he negotiated with Laufey: the Frost Giants would invade Asgard, Loki would supposedly repel them, and Laufey would recover the Casket of Ancient Winters. Loki intended to betray Laufey from the beginning. 34 36

When Laufey attempted to kill the sleeping Odin, Loki killed his biological father with his scepter to appear as Asgard's savior before Frigga. He subsequently seized control of the Rainbow Bridge and sent two Destroyers to Earth to eliminate Thor and those aiding him. 38 39 42

After Thor returned to Asgard, Loki attempted to annihilate Jotunheim by overloading the Rainbow Bridge's energy transmission. Thor destroyed the bridge to stop him. In the resulting explosion, Odin rescued Thor and Apocalypse but left Loki to fall into the void beneath the Cosmic Sea. 44 45

Loki later appeared at the Time Variance Authority alongside a female Loki from another timeline, where they discovered that the Time-Keepers were mechanical puppets under Kang's control. Kang had designated Loki as an exception to the TVA's usual restrictions on timeline-related activity. Loki subsequently reappeared on Earth, threatening Jane Foster and Valkyrie. 48 50

On Earth, Loki openly began a campaign of terror rather than concealing himself behind a staged capture. Using the Mind Stone through his scepter, he corrupted civilians in several European cities, including Hawkeye, and incited widespread murder, arson, and disorder. His resentment toward Earth was intensified by Odin's decision to save Apocalypse rather than him during the collapse of the Rainbow Bridge. 53 57

Loki stole iridium and used the Tesseract to prepare a wormhole capable of bringing an alien army to Earth. His planned false surrender at a European concert failed when Black Widow, Iron Man, and Captain America immediately attacked him; he escaped their combined assault through illusions and evasive movement. 54 55 56

After infiltrating the Helicarrier through a tampered Quinjet, Loki attempted to destroy its nuclear reactor. Apocalypse saw through his invisibility and duplicates, sealed his power, and captured him, but the Loki humiliated by the Hulk was later revealed to be a tangible duplicate. The real Loki had remained hidden and activated the Tesseract, opening the wormhole above New York for the Chitauri invasion. 57 58

Loki ultimately hid his true body beyond the wormhole while allowing duplicates to continue misleading the Avengers on Earth. Apocalypse's use of the Infinity Stones destroyed the Chitauri fleet and exposed Loki's location, forcing him to flee. Ebony Maw retrieved Loki and took him away to answer to Thanos for the disastrous loss of the invasion force. 61

Years later, Loki and Thor were held hostage by Ebony Maw within Thanos's Stellar Array. Apocalypse communicated with the brothers through the Soul World, restored them after the Black Order cut them into pieces, and eliminated their captors. Loki later fled toward Asgard but was nearly erased by the aftermath of Thanos's attack, requiring Apocalypse's intervention and another Purple Recovery Potion to survive. 307 308 311

Repeatedly being saved by Apocalypse changed Loki's attitude. Though he initially abandoned the battle to protect himself, he came to feel gratitude and regret over not fighting alongside Apocalypse. Personality

Loki is cunning, deceptive, and intensely driven by insecurity over his identity and place within Odin's family. Learning that he was adopted convinced him that Thor had been favored because Loki was not Odin's biological son, turning his desire for recognition into resentment. 36

His schemes are elaborate but deeply personal. He manipulated both Thor and Laufey, killed his biological father, and planned the destruction of Jotunheim primarily to prove that he was more worthy of Odin and Frigga's approval than Thor. 42 44

Despite his political ambition, Loki's motives are not portrayed as a simple desire for power. He is willing to commit extreme cruelty for validation, even while presenting his actions as necessary for Asgard's safety and stability. 42 44

After Odin saved Thor and Apocalypse but not him, Loki's resentment broadened into hatred for Earth. He became increasingly theatrical and openly cruel, claiming that conquest would give humanity “freedom” while using the Mind Stone to remove his victims' restraint, morality, and fear. 53

Loki prefers manipulation, false surrender, and indirect attacks to sustained frontal combat. His confidence was badly shaken when the Avengers refused to trust his staged surrender and forced him to flee, but he adapted by using tangible duplicates and hiding his true body beyond the New York wormhole. 55 58 61

Although fundamentally self-preserving and still capable of betrayal, Loki showed a capacity for gratitude after Apocalypse saved his life multiple times. By the conflict with Thanos, he no longer felt the same desire to oppose Apocalypse and regretted fleeing instead of remaining beside him. 311
