Ch. 401Werther Couldn't Read a Sea Chart
Plot points
- Blackbeard survives a sniper’s bullet by using Armament Haki and moving aside at the last moment, though he is badly wounded.
- His crew searches the island while the sniper, Jin Hu, prepares another shot. Blackbeard spots him, forcing Jin Hu to flee by diving into the sea.
- A Sea King accidentally swallows Jin Hu, ending his escape.
- Elsewhere, Werther sets out to attack Blackbeard but gets lost because he has a territory map without the necessary Eternal Poses—and cannot interpret the sea chart well.
- Too embarrassed to call Doffy for help, Werther abandons the surprise-attack plan for now. He lands on a forested island with the King of the Sky, builds a makeshift shelter, and cooks a wild boar while waiting out the rain.
Character developments and interactions
- Blackbeard shows quick reflexes and confidence despite his injury; he recognizes that he is under attack and directs his crew to search for the sniper.
- Jin Hu is a capable long-range marksman but admits his close-combat skills are limited. His memories of Kaido’s resilience underscore how dangerous the New World’s major powers are. He dies through bad luck rather than being deliberately hunted down.
- Werther recognizes that his revenge plan was impulsive and resolves to be more careful. His pride keeps him from asking Doffy for help, while his familiarity with camping and cooking shows his practical, self-reliant side.
- Werther and the King of the Sky travel together, but the bird cannot navigate from the crude chart. Werther sends it off to hunt after they land.
Significant themes
- The danger and unpredictability of the New World: even an excellent sniper can be thwarted by powerful enemies—or by an accidental encounter with a Sea King.
- Overconfidence and poor preparation: Werther’s revenge mission stalls because he assumes he can navigate without proper charts or Eternal Poses.
- Pride and self-reliance: Werther would rather remain lost than admit his mistake and ask for help.
