Background / History

Momonga pursued Scissorhand Vick and the Scissor Pirates for two days before forcing their ship, the Flying Fish, ashore. When Loa’s Ice Dragon’s Roar froze the pirates and threatened Momonga’s landing force, Momonga split the spreading ice with a massive sword slash, then immediately ordered aid for the Marines thrown into the sea. 11

He investigated Loa rather than attacking him outright, despite recognizing the young stranger as an exceptionally dangerous ice user. Accepting Loa’s account of being stranded after observing his ragged condition, Momonga brought him aboard, provided clothing and medical care, and later raised the possibility of recruiting him with Fleet Admiral Sengoku. 12 13

Momonga approved Loa’s decision to enter the Recruit Camp, while insisting that he begin from basic training. At Marineford, he struck Loa with a Haki-infused punch when Loa’s uncontrolled freezing aura endangered nearby Marines. 14 15

During an investigation into Doflamingo, Momonga uncovered leverage against the Shichibukai but was ambushed by Underworld assassins on the return journey. He stayed behind to cover his warship’s retreat, suffering severe injuries; Doflamingo unexpectedly spared him to preserve his own Shichibukai position. 25

Momonga later accompanied the Recruit Camp’s combat assessment. He helped rescue recruits during the beast tide caused by Loa’s battle with the Silverback Great Ape, disciplined Loa after the latter froze attacking recruits, and came to accept that Loa possessed strength comparable to a vice admiral. 31 34

Personality

Momonga is disciplined, dutiful, and strongly protective of his subordinates. After his own counterattack capsized the landing force’s boats, he prioritized rescuing the freezing Marines rather than continuing the assault. 11

He balances professional suspicion with compassion. He investigated Loa’s unexplained massacre of the Scissor Pirates, but chose to help the apparently stranded survivor and later advocated for his recruitment. 12 13

Momonga is also rigidly committed to Marine duty. Although he resents the Shichibukai system, he accepts assignments concerning it because he considers obedience part of a Marine’s responsibility. 13 25
