Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Marine Admiral — historical attainment 86 178 Reached Admiral rank through physical combat and powerful Haki despite never fully mastering all six of the Six Powers. He declined a Devil Fruit and remained a martial artist.
Smash-equipped fighter 249 255 256 260 Vegapunk completes his specialized mechanical arm; Zephyr prepares for replacement surgery and subsequently fights with Smash fitted to his right arm. Its Seastone gives him an additional advantage against Devil Fruit users.

Background / History

Zephyr admired heroes as a child and joined the Navy, eventually becoming an Admiral renowned for never killing his enemies. Pirates retaliated by murdering his wife and son. Disheartened, he moved into recruit instruction rather than leaving the Navy entirely, after Sengoku persuaded him to stay 35.

Years later, Edward Weevil attacked the training ship under his command. Nearly all the students aboard died, only two survived, and Zephyr lost an arm. The attack occurred when he was sixty-five and left him increasingly consumed by grief and hatred 35 255.

His refusal to kill had also imposed a lasting physical cost: he accumulated more injuries and hardship than contemporaries such as Garp. In old age, those lingering injuries helped drive his determination to settle his unfinished affairs while he could still fight 252.

Future Known to Loa

  • Loa remembers an original-story future in which Zephyr forms the Pirate Guerrillas, abandons his non-killing vow, and breaks with the Navy after Weevil becomes a Shichibukai 35.
  • In that remembered future, he becomes the avenger “Z,” establishes the NE Navy/Neo Marines, and plans to detonate three END PINs to destroy the New World 15 35 261.
  • Loa recalls Zephyr eventually dying at Kizaru’s hands and being buried by Kuzan. This is foreknowledge, not Zephyr’s documented fate in the novel’s altered storyline 35.
  • Loa’s reliability allows Zephyr to leave recruit instruction earlier than Loa expected, disrupting the preparations intended to prevent that future 249 254 255.

Appearance

  • Build: A sturdy, broad-shouldered old man with densely packed muscles described as resembling tree roots 15.
  • Hair: Purple, hedgehog-like hair; additional white hairs appear during his months of pirate hunting 15 300.
  • Clothing: Initially wears a purple suit; later appears in a broad cloak aboard his flagship 15 338.
  • Right arm: Initially uses a simple black prosthesis, later replaced by the enormous mechanical weapon Smash 15 256 300.
  • Distinguishing habits: Frequently smokes cigars, including while issuing orders or teasing Loa 233 257 300.

Personality

Zephyr is stern, perceptive, and demanding. He identifies Loa’s potential before Kuzan takes it seriously, but refuses to treat unusual powers as a substitute for a strong physique and proper control. His teaching emphasizes fundamentals, gradual progress, and instruction tailored to the student’s actual weaknesses 15 56 57.

His affection often appears as scolding, teasing, or disciplinary punches. Beneath that severity, he is intensely protective: he panics when he believes Loa has died during the Silverback Great Ape assessment and reacts furiously when the World Government turns Loa’s graduation assignment into a likely death trap 32 113 114.

Zephyr strongly favors strength earned through training. He argues with Garp over giving Minnie a Devil Fruit and later recalls turning down one himself. Nevertheless, he values resolve alongside power, praising Loa’s refusal to surrender even when victory against Kizaru appears impossible 48 178.

Repeated losses transform his former gentleness into ruthless anti-pirate vengeance. He eventually executes surrendered pirates after promising them survival. That hostility does not erase his strategic judgment: despite despising the Shichibukai system, he rejects its immediate abolition because removing it without a replacement would destabilize the seas 158 257.

Abilities & Skills

Physical Combat

  • A close-combat specialist whose strength remains near its former peak during Loa’s early training, despite his age and missing arm 38 112.
  • Uses powerful punches, rapid movement, and precise bodily coordination; Loa later acknowledges that Zephyr would overwhelm him in a fight restricted to physical techniques 56 184.
  • Defeats Jones in a battle whose destructive force shatters and sinks the island where they fight 260.
  • Limit: Age and accumulated injuries reduce his ability to sustain peak performance during prolonged, high-intensity combat 104.

Armament Haki

  • His powerful Haki helped earn him Admiral rank and the epithet Black Arm 86.
  • Coats his fists for combat and discipline, including his attack on Loa at the Marineford harbor 233.
  • Uses dense Armament Haki to resist the freezing power driven into his body by Loa’s combined attack, preventing him from being frozen solid 105.
  • Teaches that blackened hardening results from sufficiently strong, dense coating rather than being an entirely separate principle 100.

Six Powers

  • Demonstrates and teaches the Six Powers, explaining them as methods of mastering the body rather than merely a set of attacks 56.
  • Slows down Soru to show Loa the coordinated movement behind its speed 56.
  • Identifies Iron Body, Soru, and Kami-e as especially important fundamentals and explains how Geppo can improve Loa’s ice-assisted aerial movement 56.
  • Limit: He has never fully mastered all six techniques; his Haki and physical combat compensate for that incomplete mastery 86.

Compressed-Air Punches

  • Punches fast enough to compress the air into a ranged air cannon, allowing him to attack airborne opponents 233.
  • Repeatedly uses this method against Loa’s speed. Its range and area are smaller than Kuma’s Ursus Shock, but targets within reach face considerable force 233.

Instruction and Combat Analysis

  • Trained the three current Admirals and numerous other Marine officers 33.
  • Diagnoses Loa’s difficulty controlling strength gained through his presumed Devil Fruit and resolves obstacles left by broader instruction 56.
  • Provides the advice that leads Loa to experiment successfully with combining Haki and his resistant Dragon Body 104.
  • Understands Asura Swordsmanship’s internal-damage mechanism and Tony’s limitations; anticipates its loss-of-control risk and arranges Haisoken’s presence on the field mission 49 83.

Command and Intimidation

  • Builds the Pirate Guerrillas into a feared hunting force with additional ships and soldiers approved by Sengoku 338.
  • Uses surrender tactics to reduce danger to his own soldiers and confiscates enemy weapons to replenish his force’s supplies 257.
  • Retains an oppressive presence even after losing his fighting strength; his confrontation with CP0 makes those in the room struggle to breathe 387.
  • Limit: Following the Dyna Stone explosion, surgery leaves him stable but potentially unable to fight again. By the Charlotte hostage crisis, he is only somewhat stronger than an ordinary old man 378 543.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Simple black prosthetic arm — His initial replacement arm, before Smash is ready 15.
  • Smash — Vegapunk’s specialized mechanical right arm, also referred to as the Crusher in the early description of his future equipment. It incorporates Seastone and can smash weapons and crush opponents 15 256 257 260.
  • Golden Den Den Mushi — Represents Sengoku’s authorization to board a Shichibukai vessel; Zephyr uses it to compel Moria to accept an inspection 345 346.
  • Cigars and lighter — Regular personal items; he once uses a thrown lighter as a trick during his attack on Loa 233.

Relationships

  • Loa — Student and trusted successor in protecting the Elite Camp. Their combative banter develops into deep mutual loyalty; after Ain’s death, Zephyr asks Loa to avenge her, while Loa insists on securing his survival first 15 56 255 543.
  • Kuzan / Aokiji — Former student who entrusts Loa’s further training to him, defends his right to make his own choices, and later visits him during his isolation 15 36 103 518.
  • Kizaru — Former student whose reliance on Devil Fruit power contrasts with Zephyr’s martial philosophy. Loa’s remembered original future identifies Kizaru as Zephyr’s eventual killer 33 35 184.
  • Akainu — One of the three Admirals trained by Zephyr 33.
  • Ain — Devoted student and caretaker who accompanies him into the Pirate Guerrillas and manages his meals for his health. She dies protecting him during the Charlotte family’s abduction 252 518 543 573.
  • Binz — Pirate Guerrilla subordinate who accompanies Zephyr during the Alabasta operation 338 345.
  • Shuzo — Student who reports the corrupt Marine protection behind the Flying Bird Pirates’ raids 256.
  • Sengoku — Longtime comrade who persuaded him to remain in the Navy and supports the Pirate Guerrillas. Their cooperation is strained when institutional decisions endanger Loa 35 114 338.
  • Tsuru — Old friend whose support for Weevil’s recruitment devastates him. Her later private letter brings him visible comfort; its contents are not disclosed 178 515 518.
  • Jones — Initially an opponent Zephyr distrusts. After defeating him, Zephyr becomes a collaborator in the plan to build an alternative to the Shichibukai 252 260.
  • Tony — Student whose association with Shanks forces Zephyr to balance concern with Marine duty. Zephyr reports him as missing but refuses to conceal the truth from Sengoku 233.
  • Kane — Former student from Zephyr’s Admiral years who later helped care for his recruits and condemns the leadership’s treatment of his teacher 573.
  • Dragon and Xin Luo — Both identified as former students. Zephyr views his students’ world-changing ambitions with mixed pride and concern, particularly warning against trusting Xin Luo lightly 548 694.
  • Edward Weevil — Enemy responsible for the training-ship massacre and loss of his arm; Zephyr also suspects him of supplying the Charlotte family with information about Ain 255 515 543.
  • Gecko Moria — Shichibukai whose deliberate detonation of Dyna Stone gravely injures Zephyr and devastates his force 346 377 378.
  • Charlotte Linlin — Enemy whose family abducts Zephyr and Ain and uses him as leverage against Loa 543.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Training Loa

Zephyr first meets Loa after his uncontrolled freezing aura causes chaos at Marineford. He requires the recruit to address him as “Teacher” but explicitly states that this does not yet constitute personal discipleship 15.

During the assessment, he replaces Loa’s normal qualification route with a challenge against every willing recruit. After Kuzan leaves, Zephyr promises to train Loa into an Admiral and becomes his principal instructor in physical control, the Six Powers, and Haki 35 36 56 100.

Loa’s rapid progress eventually injures Zephyr during a serious spar and produces perfect assessment scores. Zephyr recognizes that he has little left to teach him, then fiercely opposes the political manipulation surrounding his graduation mission 104 105 106 112 113 114.

Pirate Guerrillas

Zephyr leaves headquarters confident that Loa can protect the recruits. He also intends to monitor Jones on Loa’s behalf and receives Smash before beginning his renewed campaign 252 253 255 256.

His first documented campaign marks an explicit abandonment of his non-killing vow. After discovering a town ruined by the Flying Bird Pirates and learning that a Marine colonel sheltered them for bribes, he kills their captain and orders a bombardment of the disarmed prisoners 256 257.

He subsequently cooperates with Jones and tracks a shipment of forbidden Dance Powder from the New World, allowing the smugglers to lead him toward their buyer 260 300.

Alabasta and Loss of Combat Strength

Zephyr arrives in Alabasta with the Pirate Guerrillas, saves Drake from Moria, and invokes Sengoku’s authority to inspect Moria’s ship. He boards alone to keep his students away from its dangerous cargo 338 345 346.

Moria detonates the Dyna Stone aboard, destroying the ship and wrecking several Guerrilla warships. Zephyr survives after surgery, although his injuries may permanently end his fighting career 346 377 378.

While recovering, he continues defending Marine authority against CP0, warns Loa about the Antonio Family and a suppressed Mary Geoise operation, and helps coordinate the trap for pirates pursuing Alabasta’s Poneglyph 387 400 401 402.

Weevil’s Recruitment and the Charlotte Hostage Crisis

The Marines’ decision to recruit Weevil as a Shichibukai leaves Zephyr feeling that his service and losses no longer matter. Tsuru’s letter later offers a measure of comfort during his lonely recovery 515 518.

Charlotte operatives then abduct him and Ain from Family Town. Ain is killed, and Zephyr—unable to avenge her himself—asks Loa for help. Loa turns Linlin’s life into leverage for his release and arranges a hostage exchange at the G-9 Branch 543 544.

Zephyr returns to his repaired seaside home and insists on staying there despite colleagues’ objections. A birthday meal with Loa and Aokiji restores their familiar mixture of affection, caution, and teasing 548.

His Students’ Wider Legacy

When Aokiji explains his connections with Loa, Xin Luo, and Dragon, Zephyr recognizes that all four are his former students. Their achievements leave him uncertain whether to laugh, cry, or do both 694.

Alternate-World Counterpart

  • A later cross-world gathering includes another Zephyr alongside Sengoku, Garp, and Tsuru. He demands to know why the students he trained left the Navy 753.
  • This counterpart has not become the avenger Z. The visitors’ respectful greeting leaves him awkward rather than hostile, and he asks everyone to sit down 754.
