Background / History

Zhunti attained the Dao from the Bodhi Tree, a supreme Innate Spiritual Root associated with Geng Metal. Following the devastation of the western lands in the Dao-Demon War, the West’s remaining fortune enabled both Zhunti and Jieyin—whose true body is the Bitter Bamboo Spiritual Root—to take form and cultivate. 24 36 39

A branch of Zhunti’s own Bodhi Tree became the Seven-Treasure Wondrous Tree, his Dao-sealing treasure. 1 Alongside Jieyin, he cultivates at Sumeru Mountain, where the remaining ancestral veins of the West converge. 36 39

At Hongjun’s first sermon, Zhunti and Jieyin arrived late and found the six prayer mats occupied. Zhunti feigned despair until Hong Yun surrendered his seat out of compassion. He then forced Kunpeng to yield his own seat to Jieyin, aided by Yuanshi’s verbal support and pressure. 12 Zhunti later joined the other great powers in requesting that Hongjun teach the Three Corpses Severing Method. 17

After learning that Dao Xuan had been gathering branches from major spiritual roots, Zhunti and Jieyin concluded that he might seek the Bodhi Tree and Bitter Bamboo next. They refused to risk even a branch of their true bodies and prepared an ambush at Sumeru Mountain. 36

When Dao Xuan arrived, the pair trapped him in Jieyin’s layered Dream World. Zhunti attacked with Geng Metal Divine Thunder, dream-created treasures, and his Bodhi Golden Body, but Dao Xuan broke the Dream World’s structure by drawing on his Inner World. Jieyin detonated the realm to prevent Zhunti’s complete capture; nevertheless, Dao Xuan seized a massive fragment of the Bodhi Golden Body. 41 42

After the battle, Zhunti angrily threatened to fight Dao Xuan to the death with the Seven-Treasure Wondrous Tree, but Jieyin restrained him. Recognizing that Dao Xuan also wished to avoid an irreconcilable conflict, Zhunti offered a Phoenix Egg as compensation to settle their karma. Following the settlement, the western pair activated Sumeru Mountain’s Mountain-Guarding Array and withdrew into cultivation. 43 44

Zhunti had previously discovered the egg with its life nearly exhausted by the powerful Innate Yin-Yang Origin within it. He preserved the fledgling using his own origin and concealed the egg in Sumeru Mountain’s ley lines, without informing Jieyin. He hoped either to obtain the Yin-Yang Origin after the fledgling died or to see it develop into a powerful being by absorbing that origin and the Geng Metal Origin he had supplied. Dao Xuan identified the egg as belonging to Yuanfeng’s offspring, the Roc. 43 44

At Hongjun’s final sermon, Zhunti was among the six future Saints accepted as disciples and granted treasures and Primordial Purple Qi. 55 After Nuwa attained Sainthood, he anxiously consulted Jieyin about their own still-undiscovered opportunity. Later, when Nuwa publicly revealed Dao Xuan’s prior attainment of the Hunyuan Daluo Golden Immortal realm, Zhunti agreed with Jieyin that they should avoid further conflict with him. 73 75

Hong Yun subsequently sent his evil-corpse incarnation to Sumeru Mountain to seek a share in the western pair’s anticipated sect-founding merit. Jieyin, Zhunti, and Hong Yun jointly founded the Western Teachings, with Jieyin as Sect Leader and the other two as Vice Sect Leaders. Its founding merit raised Jieyin and Zhunti to Quasi-Saint perfection but allowed Hong Yun to become a Saint first. Resenting this outcome, the pair made forty-nine great vows, borrowed additional merit from the Heavenly Dao, and attained Sainthood themselves. 88 90

Appearance

Zhunti’s ordinary Daoist appearance is not described in the available material. His combat manifestation, the Bodhi Golden Body, is an extension of his true Bodhi Tree body. 42

Personality

Zhunti is calculating, shameless, and intensely pragmatic in pursuing opportunities. At Zixiao Palace, he used a staged display of grief to obtain Hong Yun’s prayer mat, then immediately sought a second mat for Jieyin through intimidation. 12

He is also territorial and easily provoked when his interests are threatened. The prospect of Dao Xuan taking even a branch of the Bodhi Tree offended him, particularly because he was accustomed to exploiting others rather than being targeted himself. 36 In battle, Zhunti favors escalation and direct aggression, contrasting with Jieyin’s more cautious judgment. 41

Despite his outward fury, Zhunti can remain composed enough to negotiate. After losing part of his true body, he recognized that compensation could end the confrontation and put away his weapon to offer the Phoenix Egg. Dao Xuan judged that much of his displayed anger was a performance rather than a complete loss of control. 43 44

His ambitions are tempered by an awareness of superior power: once Dao Xuan’s Hunyuan attainment became public, he agreed to avoid provoking him again. His anxiety over Nuwa’s earlier Sainthood and resentment at Hong Yun’s breakthrough also reveal his competitive drive to secure his own Dao opportunity. 73 75 90

Zhunti attacks Dao Xuan in the Dream World with divine thunder, illusory treasures, and the Bodhi Golden Body. The plan fails when Dao Xuan overpowers the pair by mobilizing his Inner World, leaving Zhunti severely diminished after losing part of his true body. 41 42

Phoenix Egg Compensation

Following the failed ambush, Zhunti shifts from threats of a final battle to a negotiated settlement. He offers the Phoenix Egg he had secretly nurtured on Sumeru Mountain, allowing Dao Xuan to leave with both the Bodhi Golden Body fragment and the Roc’s egg. Zhunti and Jieyin then seal their mountain and concentrate on cultivation. 43 44

These spoils contribute to Dao Xuan’s subsequent world-building: origin from Zhunti’s true body becomes a new Bodhi Tree, while the Geng Metal Origin within the egg is extracted to nourish that tree. 45 48

Recognition of Dao Xuan’s Attainment

After Nuwa becomes a Saint, Zhunti worries that he and Jieyin have yet to discover their own opportunity. At Nuwa’s gathering in Taisu Heaven, her revelation that Dao Xuan attained the Dao before her forces the pair to acknowledge their former adversary’s superior standing. Zhunti accepts Jieyin’s advice to avoid further confrontation. 73 75

Western Teachings and Sainthood

Zhunti joins Jieyin and Hong Yun in establishing the Western Teachings to enlighten the beings of the West. Jieyin anchors its fortune with the Twelve-Grade Golden Lotus of Merit, while Zhunti and Hong Yun become Vice Sect Leaders. 90
