Background

Dao Xuan was a transmigrated consciousness that awakened within the Four Symbols Banana Tree on Mount Buzhou. In the perception of the Heavenly Dao, he was simply the consciousness naturally born from the spiritual root; Dao Xuan himself retained knowledge of the Primordial World’s future calamities and the coming age of Saints. 1

After transforming into a human cultivator, he left Mount Buzhou to avoid the future collapse of the mountain and the dangers surrounding the Twelve Ancestral Witches. Before departing, he discovered and claimed the Primordial Gourd Vine, its five formed gourds, and the Nine Heavens Breath Soil. 1 2

Dao Xuan located the Three Immortal Islands in the Eastern Sea—Yingzhou, Fangzhang, and Penglai—and refined each island’s boundary stele. He later merged them into Chaos Island, established Chaos Palace as his dojo, and reconstructed their formations into the Four Symbols Heaven-Sealing Formation. 3 4 5 6

The discovery of the Sea-Calming Divine Pearls and Heaven-Piercing Jianmu convinced Dao Xuan to pursue World-Proving Dao: a path centered on opening, nurturing, and ultimately perfecting a world within himself. 5 6

Hongjun initially interpreted Dao Xuan’s unusual development as evidence of an inheritance from Yang Mei, the reincarnated Space Demon God. Dao Xuan had never claimed to be Yang Mei’s disciple, but allowed the misunderstanding to persist while he was weaker. After attaining Hunyuan, he explicitly corrected it and eventually revealed his Inner World to Hongjun. 40 55 77 78 79

Appearance

Upon his transformation, Dao Xuan appeared as a tall, stern Daoist surrounded by gentle but ancient four-colored radiance. 1

Personality

Dao Xuan is cautious, calculating, and intensely focused on survival. His foreknowledge of the Primordial World’s calamities makes him distrustful of powerful figures and unwilling to become dependent on the Heavenly Dao, sects, or conventional sainthood. 1 9 11

He values long-term growth over immediate profit when doing so benefits his cultivation foundation. He preserved the Twelfth-Rank World-Cleansing White Lotus so it could reproduce, negotiated rather than destroyed the Enlightenment Tea Tree, and sought branches of spiritual roots instead of provoking needless life-and-death conflicts. 4 5 24

Despite his pragmatism, Dao Xuan is capable of compassion and loyalty. He spared the Gourd Vine’s newly formed consciousness, treated the Four Divine Beasts as his children, and came to value Zhen Yuanzi as a potential companion on the Great Dao. 3 28 30 38

His growing strength does not eliminate his preference for restraint. When the thirty-six Sea-Calming Divine Pearls failed to resolve his cultivation bottleneck, he stopped forcing his world’s advancement and sought insight through travel and observation. His return to Mount Buzhou also revealed a sentimental attachment to his birthplace and sorrow over its future destruction. 59

Dao Xuan remains morally ambiguous in pursuing resources essential to his Dao. He openly admitted taking Zhao Gongming’s pearls against his will, but provided powerful replacement treasures and acknowledged that a karmic debt remained. He is more willing to support trusted companions without reservation, sharing personal law comprehension with Zhen Yuanzi and Hong Yun in the hope that they can attain the Dao and relieve the loneliness of his own advancement. 58 81

He feels no allegiance to either the Witch Clan or the Demon Tribe, disapproving of their rigid hierarchies and worship of strength. He regards humanity as the eventual enduring protagonist of heaven and earth and generally avoids participating in the Witch-Beast Calamity. 57

After attaining Hunyuan, Dao Xuan became more willing to form lasting bonds. His acceptance of Xuanming and Linghu as disciples was based on trust, talent, and the hope of gaining future allies rather than competing with the Saints for worldly destiny. He also continued treating old friends as equals and declined the proposed title of “Ancestor of Law,” partly out of respect for Hongjun’s sacrifice in merging with the Heavenly Dao. 69 77 80 91

Four Symbols Dao

Dao Xuan’s foundational Dao derives from Earth, Water, Fire, and Wind—the four primal forces associated with his true form.

Five Elements Dao and Divine Light

Dao Xuan chose the Five Elements Law as the first law to perfect for his Inner World’s advancement, taking advantage of the spiritual roots he had gathered. Its development eventually surpassed his comprehension of the Four Symbols Laws. 47 57

The destruction of Chaos’s Middle Thousand World supplied both the impetus for his Main World’s advancement and a substantial improvement to its Space Law. He subsequently sought Hongjun’s help in locating other independent worlds in Chaos. 67 79 80

Although he initially concealed this method from other great powers, Dao Xuan taught it to Xuanming and Linghu and later permitted Hongjun to inspect his Greater Thousand World. Hongjun praised the method as unprecedented and recognized the World Tree’s importance as its supporting pillar. 69 77 79

Dao Xuan combines Creation Law, world authority, and spiritual resources to cultivate new spiritual roots and develop life within his Inner World.

He also possesses extensive knowledge of cultivation methods. He advised Zhen Yuanzi on Three Corpses Severing, introduced him to Law-Proving Dao, and later freely transmitted his Earth Law comprehension to Zhen Yuanzi and his Wind, Water, and Fire insights to Hong Yun. 28 29 81

His earlier understanding placed particular importance on using treasures of the same origin for Three Corpses Reunification. With greater cultivation, he revised that understanding: shared origin is advantageous, rather than his earlier assumption being a complete account of the method’s requirements. 28 81

• Four Symbols Treasure Fan / Four Symbols Qiankun Fan — Dao Xuan’s Dao-proving treasure, refined from the Four Symbols Banana Tree’s four leaves. It can break formations, unleash Four Symbols power, and absorbed roughly half of the Great Dao Merit earned from world creation. He later incorporated nine-tenths of Treasure-Dividing Cliff’s origin into it, upgrading it into the Four Symbols Qiankun Fan, a top-tier Innate Spiritual Treasure with forty-eight innate restrictions. 1 8 59

Three Talents Divine Lamp Functions

The three lamps operate in a Three Talents formation around the Heaven and Earth Fetal Membrane. Their flames break apart Chaos and refine its Earth, Water, Fire, and Wind, while the divine beasts further transform and develop the territory they open. 38

Relationships

• Gourd Vine / Linghu — Fellow Innate Spiritual Root and early companion. Dao Xuan claimed the vine but spared its developing consciousness; it later helped him locate Yingzhou Island and stabilize the Inner World. He treated it as a fellow Daoist and taught it the Dao, leading it to willingly provide a section of its body for the Yi Wood Spiritual Root. After taking female human form as Linghu, a Daluo Golden Immortal of the Creation Dao, it became his disciple. 2 3 7 47 69
• Enlightenment Tea Tree / Xuanming — Spiritual root under an agreement with Dao Xuan: it retained its consciousness and could leave after taking human form, while Dao Xuan received its tea leaves until then. It eventually transformed into Xuanming, a male Daluo Golden Immortal who cultivates the Chaos Laws, and chose to become Dao Xuan’s disciple. Xuanming later accompanied him to Nuwa’s gathering. 5 69 74 76
• Four Directions Divine Beasts — Azure Dragon, White Tiger, Vermilion Bird, and Black Tortoise were created by Dao Xuan through Great Dao Merit to guard the Inner World. He regards them with paternal affection rather than as disposable tools. They later helped him destroy Chaos’s world through the Four Symbols Formation; after completing the Five Elements, he added a central Qilin to the system of directional guardians. 8 30 38 67 68
• Houtu — An acquaintance initially kept at a respectful distance. Houtu became curious about Dao Xuan’s restraint, while Dao Xuan deliberately avoided entanglement in the Witch Clan’s future karma. They later spoke at Mount Buzhou, where he declined her invitation to visit the Witch Clan and departed before the Space Ancestral Witch arrived. Despite this avoidance, he sensed that karma already connected them. Later, Houtu suspected that the old Daoist who had guided her and offered precious spiritual gifts was Dao Xuan, and was moved by his apparent effort to help her escape a future tribulation. 11 15 60 94
• Hongjun — Teacher, benefactor, and eventual collaborator. Dao Xuan attends Hongjun’s sermons to deepen his Dao, but remains determined to pursue World-Proving Dao independently. Hongjun bestowed the Plain Cloud Boundary Flag, God-Slaying Spear, and Immortal Peach Tree in exchange for Dao Xuan’s promise to help save him from eventual assimilation by the Heavenly Dao. After Dao Xuan attained Hunyuan, their relationship became more informal, with teasing exchanges alongside serious discussions of obligation and cosmic limits. Dao Xuan corrected Hongjun’s assumption that Yang Mei was his teacher, revealed his Inner World, and pledged to do his utmost to help him. 9 13 17 55 56 77 78 79 80
• Zhen Yuanzi — A respected fellow Daoist and companion on the Great Dao. They exchanged treasures, discussed the Dao for ten thousand years, and developed mutual trust. Dao Xuan warned him about Three Corpses Reunification and introduced Law-Proving Dao after he refused to sacrifice the Ginseng Fruit Tree. Their friendship continued after Dao Xuan’s Hunyuan attainment, and Dao Xuan transmitted his own Earth Law comprehension to support Zhen Yuanzi’s cultivation. 26 27 28 29 60 80 81
• Hong Yun — A trusted friend and fellow participant in later Dao discussions. He and Zhen Yuanzi cautioned Dao Xuan about Saintly etiquette at Nuwa’s gathering, then escorted Xuanming home while Dao Xuan answered Hongjun’s summons. Dao Xuan later shared Wind, Water, and Fire Law insights with him and warned that his Primordial Purple Qi and karmic connection to Zhunti could bring a fatal disaster if Zhunti attained sainthood first. 60 74 77 80 81
• Fuxi — A respected friend and source of insight into Heavenly Secrets, Karma, Fate, Stellar Laws, and geography. Dao Xuan’s exchanges with him improved the arrangement of his Inner World’s stars. Fuxi and Nuwa remained outside the Demon Heavenly Court after Dao Xuan’s warning, and later received Immortal Peaches during a three-thousand-year Dao discussion. 51 52 57 60
• Nuwa — A close fellow Daoist whose Creation Dao Dao Xuan deeply respects. Their exchanges benefited his understanding of creation, and his guidance helped her attain the Dao. She warmly accepted his congratulations and gift upon becoming a Saint, publicly acknowledged that he had attained the Dao before her, and invited him to preach from a platform equal to her own. 51 60 74 75 76
• Dijun and Taiyi — Political adversaries. Dao Xuan traded a gourd for a Fusang Tree branch, then exposed their ambush through Kunpeng and forced them to provide Moon Laurel and Starfruit Tree branches. Their resentment persisted, but the public revelation of his Hunyuan cultivation made them fearful of confronting him and uneasy about their unresolved karma. 33 34 35 74 75
• Kunpeng — Captive and defeated ambusher. Dao Xuan suppressed him with Four-Colored Divine Light and later drained nearly all of his vital blood before releasing him. Dao Xuan subsequently used that essence blood as material for creation within his Inner World. 34 35 49 50
• Jieyin and Zhunti — Hostile Western cultivators who trapped Dao Xuan in the Dream World when he sought the Bodhi Tree. Dao Xuan broke through their layered dream technique and tore away a piece of Zhunti’s Bodhi Golden Body. A later negotiated settlement allowed him to depart, but their resentment endured. After learning that Dao Xuan had attained Hunyuan, Jieyin advised Zhunti to avoid further conflict, and Zhunti agreed. 41 42 43 44 74 75
• Zhao Gongming and the Three Xiao — Talented cultivators whom Dao Xuan chose not to accept as disciples during his acquisition of the Primordial Golden Dipper. He later took Zhao Gongming’s twenty-four Sea-Calming Divine Pearls, compensating him with a World Tree Leaf and the Myriad Mountains Seal. Creating the Inner World

After choosing World-Proving Dao, Dao Xuan used Chaos qi, the Sea-Calming Divine Pearls, Four Symbols Laws, and four supreme spiritual roots to establish a self-sustaining Lesser Thousand World. His Primordial Spirit became its Heavenly Dao, while the Four Divine Beasts became its first lifeforms. 6 7 8

Zixiao Palace Sermons

Dao Xuan journeyed through Inner Chaos to hear Hongjun’s teachings. He comprehended much of the Zixiao Divine Thunder, refused to compete for the six meditation cushions, completed many laws within his Inner World through the first sermon, and gained a clearer understanding of Hunyuan, Saints, and the Three Corpses path. 10 11 13 16 17

At the third sermon, his broad and profound Dao attainment allowed him to gain more than the other attendees despite still being a Mid-Stage Primordial Golden Immortal. Hongjun privately detained him after distributing treasures, beginning the exchange that led to his gifts and Dao Xuan’s promise of future aid. 54 55 56

Ascension to Primordial Golden Immortal

Dao Xuan claimed the Primordial Golden Dipper, then used prolonged seclusion and the accumulated insights of Zixiao Palace to evolve his Inner World into a Middle Thousand World. This brought him into the Primordial Golden Immortal realm and allowed him to formally establish the ten-law framework of World-Proving Dao. 19 22 23

Five-Element Spiritual Root Collection

To improve the Five Elements Law and strengthen his Four Symbols foundation, Dao Xuan acquired a Ginseng Fruit Tree branch from Zhen Yuanzi, cultivated it into a new spiritual root, and later gained branches from the Fusang, Moon Laurel, and Starfruit Trees through negotiation and coercion. 24 26 30 33 35

After assembling the Yang Five-Element Spiritual Roots, Dao Xuan advanced to Mid-Stage Primordial Golden Immortal and selected the Five Elements Law as his first route to world advancement. He obtained a section of the Gourd Vine for Yi Wood and chose the Moon Laurel Tree for Gui Water, then created illusory Earth Ginseng, Fire Jujube Tree, and Apple Tree foundations for Ji Earth, Ding Fire, and Xin Metal. These completed the initial framework of ten complementary Yin-Yang Five-Element Spiritual Roots. 47 49

Conflict with the Western Cultivators

Seeking the metal-aligned Bodhi Tree, Dao Xuan entered the western lands and fell into Jieyin’s layered Dream World. He used the Four Symbols Treasure Fan and the power of his Inner World to resist Jieyin and Zhunti, ultimately taking part of Zhunti’s Bodhi Golden Body. 39 41 42

Jieyin subsequently restrained the enraged Zhunti and sought to end the confrontation. Dao Xuan, privately worried that renewed fighting might provoke Hongjun’s intervention, accepted a negotiated settlement after Zhunti offered a sufficient price. A Phoenix Egg formed part of the settlement and later became material for Dao Xuan’s creation work. 43 44 48

Creation Experiments and Dao Exchanges

Dao Xuan used the Phoenix Egg to nourish the Bodhi Tree and prepare Roc’s transformation, established the remaining Yin-element spiritual root foundations, and deposited Kunpeng’s essence blood in his Inner World’s Eastern Sea. He then accelerated time within a selected region to advance its development. 48 49 50

Seeking a richer and more diverse world, he visited Fuxi and Nuwa at Phoenix Perch Mountain. Nuwa’s Creation Dao and Fuxi’s Heavenly Secrets Dao supplied insights into life, celestial order, Karma, and Fate. His warning also influenced their decision not to join the Demon Heavenly Court. 51 52 57 60

Hongjun’s Gifts and Dao Integration

Hongjun privately questioned Dao Xuan about Yang Mei and revealed the constraints placed upon his own fate by the Creation Jade Disc. He gave Dao Xuan the Plain Cloud Boundary Flag, God-Slaying Spear, and Immortal Peach Tree, but asked him to attempt to save his consciousness from eventual assimilation after Dao Integration. Dao Xuan accepted the responsibility. 55 56

Dao Xuan witnessed Hongjun merge with the Heavenly Dao, gaining a rare opportunity to contemplate the revealed Heavenly Dao directly. Afterward, he collected the now-empty Treasure-Dividing Cliff. Back on Chaos Island, he merged the Immortal Peach Trees, sacrificed the flag for Xin Metal Origin, and entered seclusion, eventually reaching Late Primordial Golden Immortal. 56 57

Gathering the Thirty-Six Sea-Calming Divine Pearls

Seeking to overcome his world’s bottleneck, Dao Xuan waited outside Kunlun Mountain for a thousand years and followed Zhao Gongming to Luofu Cave. Through Great Dream of a Thousand Autumns, he drew Zhao Gongming into a private dream and took the twenty-four pearls bestowed by Tongtian. He compensated Zhao Gongming with the Myriad Mountains Seal and a World Tree Leaf while acknowledging an unresolved karmic obligation. 57 58

Dao Xuan combined these pearls with the twelve already integrated into his Inner World, forming thirty-three Heaven Realms and thirty-three Hell Realms. Although the fusion improved multiple laws and strengthened the world, it did not produce a major breakthrough. Recognizing that the Five Elements Law still required perfection, he allowed the world to develop naturally and spent tens of thousands of years traveling through the Primordial World. 59

Return to Mount Buzhou and Primordial Golden Immortal Perfection

During his return to Mount Buzhou, Dao Xuan encountered Houtu and spoke of his birthplace. He declined her invitation to visit the Witch Clan and left before the Space Ancestral Witch arrived, but sensed that karma already bound him to Houtu. 60

He then visited Fuxi and Nuwa, shared genuine Immortal Peaches, and discussed the Dao with them for three thousand years. After another exchange with Zhen Yuanzi and Hong Yun, he returned to Chaos Island. Several dozen yuanhui of seclusion brought him to Primordial Golden Immortal perfection and close to completing the Five Elements Law. 60

Destroying Chaos’s World and Attaining Hunyuan

Dao Xuan’s exploration of another Middle Thousand World exposed him to powerful treasures, including Gaia’s Earth Trident and a Thunder treasure. He later joined the Four Divine Beasts in a Four Symbols Formation that destroyed Chaos and its world, suppressing Chaos’s consciousness as it resisted. 64 67

He refined the destroyed world into World Origin and placed it within his World Tree. The resulting transformation elevated his Main World into a Greater Thousand World and its three thousand surrounding Lesser Thousand Worlds into Middle Thousand Worlds. With the Five Elements Law complete, Dao Xuan proved the Dao and became a Hunyuan Daluo Golden Immortal. 67

The breakthrough granted him greater independence, although he recognized that he still could not defeat the Primordial World’s Heavenly Dao. He nevertheless believed that he could escape it and began considering other worlds’ origins as a means of further cultivation. 67

Consolidation and Acceptance of Disciples

Following his breakthrough, Dao Xuan stabilized his Inner World, whose Solar, Lunar, and other stars had expanded tenfold. Dafeng emerged as a Daluo Golden Immortal Sun-Moon Celestial Roc, while the Azure Abyssal Mysterious Whale appeared in the ocean. Dao Xuan established the Five Directions Divine Beasts, added the central Qilin, distributed the Thunder treasure to Azure Dragon, and integrated the Dark Cloak and Invisibility Helmet into the world. 68

Upon returning to the Primordial World, he discovered that more than a hundred yuanhui had passed and that the Witch and Demon factions had fought a devastating battle. He returned quietly to Chaos Island rather than announcing his Hunyuan attainment. There, he found that the Enlightenment Tea Tree and Gourd Vine had transformed into Xuanming and Linghu. 68 69

He offered them the choice of leaving without revealing his secrets or remaining as his disciples. Both chose discipleship. Dao Xuan taught them the World Dao, warned them about the dangers of opening an Inner World without a World Tree, and preached to the island’s assembled inhabitants. 69

Public Revelation at Nuwa’s Gathering

Dao Xuan attended Nuwa’s celebration with Xuanming and presented her with a nine-petaled Pure World White Lotus. His use of “fellow Daoist” rather than “Empress” shocked the assembled cultivators, who did not yet know his realm. Nuwa’s warm response did not immediately dispel their misunderstanding, and Zhen Yuanzi and Hong Yun privately urged him to apologize. 74

After creating Taisu Heaven, Nuwa invited Dao Xuan onto a Dao Platform equal to her own and publicly revealed that he had attained the Dao before her and helped guide her attainment. His Hunyuan cultivation became known, transforming the crowd’s interpretation of his behavior and forcing his adversaries to reconsider their grievances. 75

Dao Xuan listened to Nuwa’s eight-hundred-year Creation Dao sermon and then expounded the Five Elements Dao for one thousand years. Hongjun, observing from Zixiao Palace, was surprised that Dao Xuan’s achievement involved the Five Elements rather than the Four Symbols route he had expected. Dao Xuan departed with Xuanming, Zhen Yuanzi, and Hong Yun. 76

Revealing World-Proving Dao to Hongjun

Hongjun summoned Dao Xuan after the gathering, reminded him of his promise, and warned him not to mistake Hunyuan attainment for superiority over the Heavenly Dao. Dao Xuan corrected the assumption that Yang Mei was his teacher and pledged to do his utmost to assist Hongjun. 77 78

Dao Xuan then revealed his Greater Thousand World and allowed Hongjun to examine it. Hongjun praised the unprecedented method and the opportunity represented by its World Tree. Their discussion established Hunyuan Taiji as Dao Xuan’s next major objective and the level required for helping Hongjun. 79 80

Dao Xuan requested help finding other worlds in Chaos. Hongjun declined to supply vast quantities of treasures or spiritual roots at the Primordial World’s expense, but promised to notify him of other worlds and gave him the copied Yin-Yang Taiji Diagram for study. He also cautioned Dao Xuan to use his Inner World sparingly within the Primordial World. 80

Supporting Zhen Yuanzi and Hong Yun

Dao Xuan returned to Longevity Mountain, where Zhen Yuanzi, Hong Yun, and Xuanming were waiting. He maintained his informal friendship with the two fellow cultivators despite their increased deference to his status. 80

To support their advancement, he transmitted Earth Law insights to Zhen Yuanzi and Wind, Water, and Fire Law insights to Hong Yun. He explained that helping them also served his desire for companions after attaining the Dao. Dao Xuan then warned Hong Yun that his unresolved karma with Zhunti, combined with his possession of Primordial Purple Qi without being Hongjun’s disciple, could cause a fatal disaster. 81

Public Preaching and Pursuit of Hunyuan Taiji

After Laozi’s failed Three Corpses Reunification and Minghe’s unsuccessful attempts to prove the Dao through merit stirred doubts about Hongjun’s teachings, Dao Xuan intervened to preserve Hongjun’s dignity. He revealed Chaos Island publicly for the first time and invited the Primordial World’s great powers to hear him expound the Dao. 91

His explanations clarified their paths to attainment and prompted a proposal to honor him as the “Ancestor of Law,” placing him alongside Hongjun. Dao Xuan suppressed the proposal, preferring not to attract excessive attention and judging Hongjun’s selfless Dao Integration a greater accomplishment than his own. 91

For his second proving of the Dao, Dao Xuan chose the Four Symbols Laws. He continued studying them while also completing the Earth Trident’s refinement, recognizing that its Earth Law was distinct from the Earth Law within the Four Symbols. The anticipated breakthrough would bring him to Hunyuan Taiji, but had not yet occurred. 92

Guidance to Houtu

An old Daoist offered Houtu guidance concerning a future tribulation and precious spiritual items. Houtu later suspected that this figure was Dao Xuan, reasoning that very few beings could conceal their identity from her after she developed Primordial Spirit cultivation. 94

She was moved by his apparent concern despite their limited previous acquaintance. However, she interpreted the danger mainly through the impending Witch-Demon conflict and did not understand why the warning had been delivered with such caution or why the old Daoist had been unable to finish explaining it. 94
