Background / History
Cedric met Roy Smee at Ollivanders while purchasing his first wand. The two immediately got along, and Cedric promised to write to Roy after leaving with his mother. Dumbledore described him as “a fine child.” 3
Before Hogwarts, Cedric prepared extensively for school, previewing first-year material, practicing Transfiguration, and helping his parents with household work. His diligence continued aboard the Hogwarts Express, where he and Aisling discussed Transfiguration beyond the first-year curriculum. 11 12
He was sorted into Hufflepuff and became Roy’s closest roommate and friend. Roy specifically chose Hufflepuff partly to study “Brotherhood Magic” alongside Cedric. 14
Cedric’s family lives at Diggory House, a spacious, three-story home on a hill. His father, Amos, holds a fairly senior Ministry position connected to the regulation and control of magical creatures. Cedric later offered Roy a room in the family home, although Roy declined because of his responsibilities toward Mia. 3 11 162 182
Appearance
Cedric is repeatedly described as handsome, with a sunny smile and polished, courteous manner. His looks attract immediate attention from other Hufflepuff students. 3 14 15
- Recognized by students and adults alike as Hufflepuff’s most handsome boy. 180 201
- Often presents himself neatly and formally, particularly at social gatherings. 180
- Can become visibly shy and blush when praised or surrounded by admirers. 15 23
- Was slightly taller than Roy during their first year. 22
- Has a sturdy physique, which helps him force his way out of the crowded Ministry atrium during the Gringotts operation. 320
Personality
Cedric is studious, modest, and conscientious. He consistently prepares ahead of class, studies upper-year material privately, and dislikes showing off his abilities despite being one of the strongest students in his year. 22 23
He values friendship and inclusion over status. Like Roy, he chose Hufflepuff rather than distancing himself from less gifted students, but his approach is quieter and more disciplined. 22
Although usually a model student, Cedric can be quietly rebellious when he believes someone has acted justly. After realizing Roy had defeated the Slytherin students who ambushed him, Cedric simply patted him on the shoulder and said, “Nicely done.” 35
Cedric is scrupulous about giving others credit. When McGonagall intended to praise him and his classmates for the elaborate Hufflepuff mascot “Rocket,” he immediately explained that Roy had made it. He also willingly helps classmates master advanced techniques and assists Connor with keeping up after his illness. 73 76 206
His friendship with Roy gradually brings out a more mischievous side. He participates in their eccentric “brother handshake,” joins Aisling in teasing Roy during a broom race, and retaliates against Draco Malfoy’s insults toward the Weasleys with an electrical alchemical prank. Although he hesitates before the prank, he ultimately decides not to remain a passive observer. 162 180 182
Cedric’s composure can falter under emotional pressure. Believing Roy had died in America left him grieving and unusually short-tempered, though he quickly tried to regain control after each outburst. As Quidditch captain, he also struggles with self-doubt when his nervous teammates fail to respond to his encouragement. 130 292
His attraction to Cho makes him awkward and insecure despite his popularity. He worries about whether students from other Houses look down on Hufflepuff and follows Roy’s ill-advised suggestion that defeating Cho in a duel will impress her. 201 202 249
Abilities & Skills
Academic Ability
Cedric is an exceptional all-round student who studies consistently and takes his responsibilities seriously.
- Earned first place in his year, narrowly surpassing Roy through a nearly perfect History of Magic score. 136
- Completes assignments early, including summer homework and advanced Transfiguration essays. 162
- Was regarded as one of the first year’s strongest students, with only Roy and Aisling clearly competing at his level. 22
- His thorough preparation influences Roy, Connor, and Gabriel to study alongside him. 28 40
- Recited Dittany’s primary uses accurately enough to earn five House points in his first Herbology lesson. 18
- Correctly explained Hinkypunks’ habits from memory, earning three House points in Defence Against the Dark Arts. 29
- Continued reviewing his new textbooks throughout the return journey to Hogwarts despite having already previewed their contents repeatedly during the holidays. 225
Transfiguration
Cedric possesses strong technical understanding and careful magical control.
- Practiced Transfiguration before arriving at Hogwarts and successfully transformed a matchstick into a mostly complete needle in his first lesson. 23
- Received eight House points from McGonagall, who praised both his talent and effort. 23
- Studied third-year Transfiguration material in private. 22
- Discussed advanced animal-to-object Transfiguration with Aisling before the term began. 12
- Was invited to McGonagall’s advanced first-year Transfiguration class and received special praise, alongside Aisling, for helping classmates complete its exercise. 73
- Recognized the sophistication of Roy’s animated playing cards and questioned Roy’s claim of poor magical control after seeing the intricate patterns on his transfigured needle. 21 23
- Operated Roy’s “Rocket” mascot during the Hufflepuff–Ravenclaw match, using its smoke grenades and colored laser effects against the Ravenclaw stands. The construct itself was Roy’s work rather than Cedric’s. 76
Dueling
Cedric is a capable duelist whose strength comes from preparation, composure, and solid spellwork.
- Held first position for Hufflepuff in the lower-year dueling league and defeated opponents from all three rival Houses for nine consecutive victories. 249
- Single-handedly overwhelmed lower-year teams, including third- and fourth-year opponents, to earn Hufflepuff nearly fifteen points. 250
- Partnered with Roy in the First Dueling Club Tournament despite believing he could not defeat Aisling or Elliott alone. 64
- Kept Aisling occupied during the tournament while Roy confronted Elliott. 64
- Can cast the Shield Charm in combat. During the championship match, he reacted defensively to Aisling’s surprise attack, but her concealed spellpower shattered his shield and knocked him unconscious. Roy’s healing restored consciousness, though Cedric could not continue fighting. 65
Flying and Quidditch
Cedric is Hufflepuff’s most skilled flier and later becomes the House team captain.
- His flying is defined by control, turning, acceleration, and physical coordination rather than showy maneuvers. 43
- Competed against Roy and Marcus Flint in the broom race; Roy ultimately won through an unexpected burst of speed. 45
- Became Hufflepuff Quidditch captain after the previous captain resigned. 277
- Scouts rival teams, studies their tactics, and continues training while managing schoolwork. 279
- Hopes to lead Hufflepuff to the Quidditch Cup, though he is initially discouraged by the team’s weak roster. 272
- Raced neck and neck with Marcus Flint at the front of the field during the opening stretch of the first-year broom contest, with both riding Cleansweep Sevens. 44
- Carefully analyzed Aisling’s constantly moving Seeker style, her ability to support teammates, and the advantage provided by her broom when comparing her with Charlie Weasley. 279
- Plays as a Seeker. His agility in that role later allows him to avoid contact with a Ministry visitor while hiding beneath an Invisibility Cloak in a cramped lift. 315
- Checks on teammates’ physical condition and attempts to motivate the rebuilt Hufflepuff lineup before its debut against Ravenclaw, although Roy must reassure him when his own confidence falters. 292
Resistance to Enchantment
- Briefly fell under Pheobe Delacour’s beauty enchantment at Aisling’s birthday party but quickly recovered his senses. His unusually rapid recovery impressed Pheobe; he was resistant rather than wholly unaffected. 180
Covert Operations and Improvisation
- Participated in Roy and Aisling’s staged conflict intended to draw out Connor’s attacker, deliberately acting hostile toward Aisling in advanced Transfiguration class despite their actual cooperation. 87
- Used an Invisibility Cloak to infiltrate the Ministry during the Gringotts heist, entering through the visitor lift without being detected. 315
- Improvised when the crowded atrium blocked his route by hiding inside a wheeled cargo container. This carried him to the Department of Mysteries, where restricted lifts and disrupted communications stranded him until Kingsley helped. 317
- Installed specially prepared fireworks amid a smoke diversion in the Ministry atrium, detonated them, and escaped through the Floo Network. The diversion gave Kingsley an excuse not to dispatch help to Gringotts. 320

Equipment
- Ash wand — 12¼ inches, unicorn-hair core, nicely flexible. 3
- Owl — Lent to Roy so he could send an apology letter to Aisling. 16
- Deluxe Wizard’s Chess set — Borrowed by Roy and Connor; its pieces return to the box automatically. 22
- Enchanted accessory from Roy — Glows in darkness and returns to Cedric’s hand when thrown. 11
- Nimbus 2000 — Bought by his father to support Cedric’s plans to join Hufflepuff’s Quidditch team. Cedric showed it to Roy and Aisling before their race to The Burrow. 162
- Alchemical toys from Roy — Includes smoke-producing, fire-shooting, flying, and electrical devices, with additional toys received at Christmas. Cedric concealed an electrical toy in his palm and turned it to maximum power before shaking Draco Malfoy’s hand. 182
- Potter family Invisibility Cloak — Supplied by Roy for the Ministry diversion during the Gringotts heist. Cedric used it to enter the Ministry unseen and conceal himself in the atrium. 308 315 320
- Communication earpiece — Used to coordinate with Roy and Aisling during the operation; transmissions failed while Cedric was in the Department of Mysteries. 317
- Specially prepared fireworks and detonator — Fireworks made by the Weasley twins and installed by Cedric in the Ministry atrium as a diversion. 320
Relationships
- Roy Smee — Best friend, roommate, teammate, and self-described “brother.” Cedric met Roy before Hogwarts, joined him in Hufflepuff, supports him through conflicts, and volunteers to duel beside him despite the danger. 3 14 35 64 He becomes Roy’s first Wizard Auto Chess opponent, offers him a home after his arrest, and is deeply distressed when Roy is believed dead. He later agrees to assist the Gringotts heist after learning that Roy wants to identify Mia’s attacker. 58 130 162 308
- Aisling Grindelwald — Academic peer and rival. They discussed advanced Transfiguration before school; McGonagall encouraged them to exchange ideas, while Aisling later defeated Cedric in a high-stakes dueling match. 12 23 65 Despite that injury, they remain on good terms and attend advanced Transfiguration together. Cedric serves as an awkward intermediary for Roy’s proposed fake attack, then cooperates with Aisling in staging their apparent hostility. He also travels in her luxurious Thestral carriage before the Gringotts operation. 73 86 87 312
- Connor — Dormmate and friend. Cedric studies and plays Wizard’s Chess with him, later working with him on Hufflepuff’s Quidditch efforts. 21 272 277 He helps protect Connor after the latter’s inflammatory commentary, worries during his hospitalization, joins Roy and Gabriel in collecting him from St. Mungo’s, and helps him keep up academically after his illness. 76 85 93 206
- Gabriel — Dormmate and friend who regularly accompanies Cedric, Roy, and Connor. 16 22 93
- Fred and George Weasley — Roy’s close Gryffindor friends; Cedric tolerates their mischief and lends them his completed homework. 225 He retaliates against Draco Malfoy for insulting their family and later uses fireworks made by the twins for the Ministry diversion. They also join Cedric and the others on the Boxing Day visit to Mia. 182 320 329
- Amos and Mrs. Diggory — Cedric’s warm and welcoming parents. Amos encouraged Roy and Cedric to become friends before they met. 3 Amos buys Cedric a Nimbus 2000, and Roy later asks Cedric to use his father’s Ministry mail channel to route the diversion parcel as a magical-creature specimen. 162 308
- Neville Longbottom — Cedric sympathizes with Neville’s difficult upbringing and suggests that the Hufflepuffs should support him when he arrives at Hogwarts. 93
- Cho Chang — Cedric’s romantic interest. He becomes captivated by her in Madam Malkin’s shop and remains distracted while searching for her at Flourish and Blotts. Her Sorting into Ravenclaw disappoints him. Following Roy’s advice, he later defeats her in the dueling league to impress her, but she interprets his attention as ridicule and becomes upset instead. 201 202 204 228 249
- Nymphadora Tonks — Friend within Roy’s wider circle. Cedric brings food to her in the Hospital Wing during the period when Roy is presumed dead. They later participate in the same Gringotts operation and visit Mia together. 130 311 312 329
- Mia — Roy’s younger companion, whose situation draws Cedric’s sympathy and support. He and Connor explain Hogwarts life and Roy’s accomplishments to her in Diagon Alley. Cedric later joins the heist aimed at uncovering her attacker and accompanies the group visiting her at St. Mungo’s on Boxing Day. 162 206 308 329
- Minerva McGonagall — Teacher who recognizes Cedric’s talent and diligence, invites him to advanced Transfiguration, and praises his assistance to classmates. She reprimands him when he deliberately provokes Aisling as part of the staged conflict. 23 73 87
- Kingsley — Operational ally who helps Cedric escape the Department of Mysteries and directs him to retrieve his package before proceeding to the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. Cedric’s eventual diversion provides cover for Kingsley to withhold Ministry assistance from Gringotts. 317 320
- Draco Malfoy — Target of Cedric’s retaliation at Aisling’s birthday party. Cedric dislikes Draco’s arrogance and shocks him through a seemingly friendly handshake after hearing him insult the Weasleys. 182
- Pheobe Delacour — Acquaintance met at Aisling’s birthday party. Pheobe initially regards Cedric favorably because of his looks, manners, academic ranking, and quick recovery from her enchantment, although his eccentric greeting ritual with Roy strikes her as childish. 180
Story Role / Major Arcs
Meeting Roy and Joining Hufflepuff
Cedric meets Roy in Diagon Alley, builds a quick friendship with him, and later welcomes him into Hufflepuff after the Sorting. Roy’s decision to join the House is directly tied to staying with Cedric. 3 14
First-Year Academic Standout
Cedric establishes himself as an unusually advanced student through private study, Transfiguration skill, and consistent preparation. He remains humble even when McGonagall and his classmates praise him. 12 22 23
His admission to McGonagall’s advanced Transfiguration class places him among a select group of first-years. He helps classmates complete its practical exercise and later operates the elaborate “Rocket” mascot produced with Roy’s outside assistance. When offered praise for the mascot, Cedric honestly identifies Roy as its creator. 73 76
Support During the Slytherin Conflict
Cedric helps Roy understand that Slytherin hostility stems partly from prejudice against a talented Muggle-born orphan. Though wary of Roy’s dangerous reputation, he later gives quiet approval to Roy’s retaliation against the students who ambushed him. 32 35
Dueling Competitor and Loyal Partner
Cedric chooses to stand with Roy in the Dueling Club Tournament, calling him his brother despite having no confidence that he can defeat either opponent alone. During the ensuing championship match, Aisling breaks his Shield Charm and seriously injures him. Roy heals him immediately, but Cedric’s elimination secures the championship for Slytherin. 64 65
In the later lower-year dueling league, Cedric establishes a much stronger competitive record, defeating opponents from all three other Houses in nine consecutive matches. His individual dominance includes third- and fourth-year students and brings Hufflepuff nearly fifteen points. 249 250
Helping Investigate Connor’s Attack
After Connor’s hospitalization, Cedric remains concerned about his recovery and assists Roy’s attempt to expose the unknown attacker. He first carries Roy’s proposal and a bottle of Felix Felicis to Aisling, but she refuses to negotiate through him and demands that Roy approach her personally. Cedric returns irritated at being treated as a messenger. 85 86
Once Roy and Aisling agree on their plan, Cedric deliberately mocks Aisling as a murderer during advanced Transfiguration class. The staged hostility triggers a real argument between Hufflepuff and Slytherin students and earns him a reprimand from McGonagall, while making their apparent suspicion of Aisling widely known. He later travels with Roy and Gabriel to collect Connor from St. Mungo’s after four months of treatment. 87 93
Roy’s Disappearance and Return
When Roy and Aisling disappear in America, Cedric believes his closest friend may have died. His grief makes him unusually irritable, and he leaves a dispirited dinner to bring food to the hospitalized Tonks shortly before Roy’s unexpected return. 130
At the end-of-year feast, Cedric celebrates Roy’s awards and Hufflepuff’s House Cup victory, embracing him alongside Connor. During the following summer, he worries about reports of Roy’s arrest and offers to let him stay at Diggory House. 136 162
Crush on Cho
Cedric first sees Cho while shopping for altered robes and is immediately attracted to her. Roy’s attempts to introduce them embarrass Cedric, who physically stops him before they can speak. Cedric subsequently searches for Cho at the bookstore and worries about whether his House will affect her opinion of him. 201 202
Roy continues teasing him after Cho is sorted into Ravenclaw. Cedric later tries to impress her by defeating her in the dueling league, following Roy’s advice, but the strategy backfires when she believes his glances are mocking her. By Hufflepuff’s debut match against Ravenclaw, Cho remains openly hostile toward the Hufflepuff players. 228 249 292
Hufflepuff Captain
After taking over Hufflepuff’s Quidditch team, Cedric becomes responsible for scouting opponents, organizing training, and leading a struggling roster. He remains determined despite doubts about the team’s chances. 272 277 279
Before the rebuilt team’s debut against Ravenclaw, Cedric repeatedly checks that Roy’s apparent injury will not affect his performance and worries about Connor’s severe pre-match nerves. His attempts to motivate the players do little to dispel their anxiety, leading him to question his leadership. Roy reassures him before they enter the pitch, then immediately scores the match’s opening goal. 292
Gringotts Heist and Ministry Diversion
Roy recruits Cedric to disrupt the Ministry’s response while the others rob Gringotts. Initially incredulous at the proposed “bombing,” Cedric questions Roy’s purpose. After Roy explains that he wants to uncover Mia’s attacker, Cedric agrees. Roy emphasizes that the device is a harmless, firework-like diversion and supplies an Invisibility Cloak, instructing Cedric to route a parcel through Amos’s Ministry mail channel under the guise of a magical-creature specimen. 308
Rather than taking the Hogwarts Express home on December 19, Cedric joins the other participants at the Special Operations Office to prepare. He subsequently travels with Roy, Aisling, and Tonks in Aisling’s magically expanded Thestral carriage. 311 312
On December 25, 1990, Cedric secretly enters the Ministry through its visitor lift. The unexpectedly crowded atrium prevents him from reaching the lower floors, so he hides inside a cargo container. It delivers him to the Department of Mysteries, where he cannot open the restricted lift and loses reliable communication with the team. Kingsley arrives, helps conceal him, and directs him to retrieve his package and proceed to the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. 315 317
Cedric eventually places the fireworks in the atrium during a smoke-induced panic, escapes the crowd, triggers the detonator, and leaves through a transport fireplace. The completed diversion gives Kingsley an excuse not to send assistance to Gringotts. Cedric returns to Roy’s house near Godric’s Hollow; Lucius Malfoy catches only a fleeting glimpse of his retreating figure. 320
On Boxing Day, Cedric accompanies Roy, Aisling, Tonks, Fred, and George to visit Mia at St. Mungo’s, after the news of the robbery and Tiago’s exposed crimes reaches the Weasley family. 329
Trivia
- Cedric’s wand was described by Ollivander as befitting an “upright and kind person.” 3
- He was the third-best student in the first-year cohort at the time of Sorting, before later finishing first in year-end results. 14 136
- Roy’s habit of teasing Cedric about being a model student and attracting admirers is a recurring part of their friendship. 15 22
- Cedric is one of the few students who can recognize the quality of Roy’s advanced Transfiguration and alchemical creations. 21 22
- Cedric’s Wizard Auto Chess card costs two gold, while Fred’s costs one. Roy jokingly tells Fred to defeat Cedric in a duel if he wants his card’s price raised. 58
- His name remains in Ravenclaw’s “Book of Hatred” for only one week after the “Rocket” incident; his honesty, kindness, and appearance help redirect the resentment toward Roy. 76
- Although initially frightened by rumors that Sorting might involve fighting a Troll, Cedric grips his wand and mentally prepares for the supposed challenge. 13
- After setting the Ministry fireworks, Cedric follows the joking creed that “real men never looked back at explosions” and escapes without turning around. 320
