Background
Mia lived at Wool's Orphanage as a chronically ill and physically frail child. Roy Smee treated her with medicine and became her principal source of comfort; his guilt over leaving his own daughter behind in a previous life made him especially protective of Mia 2 55.
Her original illness is described as a severe lung disease. Roy's prescriptions gradually improved her condition, but she still frequently missed primary school because of poor health. Although the other orphanage children saved food for her and spared her heavy work, she initially lacked a close friend her own age 2 55.
After Roy left for Hogwarts, Mia became lonely and began secretly entering his room. There she discovered the Dark Magic books he had brought from Knockturn Alley, becoming absorbed in the forbidden knowledge they contained 55 63.
A blank book among Roy's belongings revealed Sebastian Sallow, a magically preserved copy of her ancestor's memories. Sebastian identified Mia as a Sallow descendant, told her of the abandoned family estate near Feldcroft and Vault 2026 at Gringotts, and offered to guide her through Slytherin's hidden legacy 63.
Before learning her ancestry, Mia used the surname Wool, as did most children at the orphanage. Sebastian could not explain why she had been abandoned, since he was only a preserved copy of memory and personality rather than her living ancestor 63.
Appearance
Mia is a small, frail girl with golden hair and pale blue eyes. Her poor health gives her an unhealthy pallor, and she is often left bruised or exhausted after physical fights and uncontrolled magic 2 147 268.
- Golden hair 2
- Pale blue pupils, which can become black-red during severe Obscurus episodes; her eyes are described as green in her first appearance 2 147 282
- Thin limbs and a sickly complexion due to her longstanding illness 55 268
- Her clothes were destroyed and her body severely burned during her first battle with Roy's attacks 147
- During her later hospital confinement, she wears a little white dress and manifests four pitch-black magical tentacles from her body 330
Personality
Mia is intensely attached to Roy and fiercely protective of the people she considers family. She readily accepts Roy's request to look after Harry, later attacking Hermione on the assumption that Hermione was bullying him 84 267.
She is bold, curious, and impulsive. Mia explores dangerous family ruins, uses magic openly when frustrated, and pursues knowledge even when she does not fully understand its consequences 184 187. Her childhood innocence remains evident in her love of snacks, ice cream, attention, and practical magic such as cleaning spells 84 183 200.
Her experiences with abandonment, illness, Dark Magic, and the Obscurus have also made her suspicious and morally unstable. She is capable of manipulation—frequently invoking her illness to gain sympathy—and may resort to Unforgivable Curses when frightened or angry 173 215 268 281. When the Obscurus overwhelms her, much of her judgment and restraint disappear entirely 282.
Mia's carefree behavior conceals considerable fear of death and abandonment. She admits these fears to Sebastian, asking whether she will die, while usually maintaining a cheerful front around Roy and her friends 190. Despite good grades and strong magical aptitude, she dislikes ordinary reading apart from comics, contrasting with Roy's enthusiasm for research 214.
She can be possessive of Roy's attention and openly resentful of Aisling's wealth and aristocratic manner. News of Roy's possible inheritance of the Thorn fortune delights her partly because she imagines it will make him richer than Aisling 174 200.
Prolonged hospital isolation initially leaves Mia feeling abandoned and leads to an argument with Roy. By their later reunion, she has become calmer: although disappointed that she still cannot leave, she accepts his refusal without losing her temper and asks him to hurry with her release 311 331.
Abilities & Skills
Obscurus
Mia contains an Obscurus: a mass of Dark Magic bound to her life force. Emotional distress can trigger black mist to leak from her body or erupt into a destructive transformation 173 174.
- Generates dense black mist capable of lifting rubble, striking targets, and tearing apart structures 147 282
- Rapidly regenerates after being damaged, allowing the mist to refill gaps in its defenses 147
- Can manifest corrosive Dark Magic whirlwinds that reshape the battlefield and interfere with victims' minds 282
- Evolved to drain and consume other people's life force during her rampage in Godric's Hollow 282
- Its power erodes her mind and worsens her instability when she draws upon it 151 282
- Cannot be removed all at once without killing Mia, as part of her life force is bound to it 190 198
- Supplies additional power when her own comparatively small magical reserves run out, allowing her to sustain a barrage of Dark spells at significant physical cost 282
- Her Godric's Hollow eruption is several times stronger than her first battle with Roy; its whirlwinds prevent an attacker from escaping through Apparition 282
- Consuming the attackers' life force causes them to age rapidly into dried corpses and makes her surrounding mist denser 282
- Later manifests four tentacles of black magic that hold a book above her while she reads in bed, demonstrating a noncombat application of her power without an accompanying rampage 330
Wandless Magic
Mia displayed instinctive magical talent before receiving formal education.
- Manipulated and crushed a mouse with invisible force while experimenting with magic 63
- Produced a small wandless Fiendfyre flame at only ten years old 63
- Cast Scourgify without a wand to clean Hermione Granger's stained dress 184
- Her unauthorized use of magic outside school risks Ministry consequences 184
Dark Magic
Sebastian trained Mia through his Memory Book, initially giving her access primarily to destructive and forbidden spells 84 145.
- Successfully produced a weak, poorly aimed Crucio during early training; she could not initially cast Avada Kedavra 84
- Learned Unforgivable Curses including Crucio, Imperio, and Avada Kedavra 84 268 281
- Uses additional Dark spells such as Flesh Separation, Blood Boiling, and Blood Decay during combat 282
- Her attempt to cast Imperio through a damaged wand backfired, knocking both herself and Harry unconscious 268
- Dumbledore restricted Sebastian from teaching her further Dark Magic and added safeguards to the Memory Book 174 177
- Successfully countered an incoming Stunning Spell with a powerful Crucio that continued onward and incapacitated an attacker 281
- Forms a skull-shaped projectile from black mist during her Godric's Hollow duel 282
- Her aggressive combat style overwhelms opponents through repeated attacks but leaves numerous openings; her opponent's orders not to kill her help her maintain the offensive 282
Transfiguration
Mia possesses exceptional natural aptitude for Transfiguration despite her limited education.
- Solved McGonagall's Transfiguration puzzle exercises in under an hour 213
- Transfigured a triangular pyramid into a cube during private instruction 213
- Reached roughly first-year Hogwarts academic level through one-on-one lessons with McGonagall and Snape 218
Potions
Mia sought Potions lessons from Severus Snape before she was eligible to enroll at Hogwarts.
- Used her Obscurial condition and orphanhood to persuade Snape to admit her into his office 215
- Received treatment Potions brewed by Snape during her hospitalization 215
- Continued studying Potions privately under Snape before the school term began 218
- Presented Roy with acne-removal potion and cold medicine after her early lessons, alongside a third bottle he judged likely to have been ruined during brewing 216
Magical Secrecy
Mia claims to have learned how to block the Ministry's Trace and tells Harry she intends to alter Hermione's memory after attacking her. These claims are not demonstrated in the encounter, since her attempted Imperio instead backfires through her damaged wand 268.
Treatment and Control
The Heart of Africa can purify Mia's Dark Magic, but direct contact causes extreme pain and can provoke another eruption. Roy uses Ancient Magic healing to stabilize her after testing the diamond 188.
Newt succeeds in separating a small quantity of her Obscurus using a spell and the diamond without causing the familiar pain. However, he finds its power far beyond what he expects from a child her age, and the separated energy emerges as persistent black mist 194.
Newt and Nicolas Flamel subsequently design a necklace that slowly extracts, purifies, and returns the Obscurus's energy while preserving its host's vitality. The Horned Serpent Gem is considered its ideal power source: Dumbledore believes this could let Mia live and attend school normally, whereas alternative methods might save her life but leave her disabled. She is expected to need the necklace until adulthood 230.
After the Godric's Hollow rampage, Dumbledore restrains Mia and places her under an African Deep Sleep Charm. He refuses to wake her immediately because she has seriously injured more than ten Aurors and might otherwise consume their life force 284.
Power Progression
| Chapter | Development | Demonstrated Capability or Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| 63 | Early self-taught wandless magic | Uses invisible force to lift and crush a mouse; produces a small wandless Fiendfyre flame at ten years old 63 |
| 84 | Initial Unforgivable Curse training | Produces a weak, inaccurate Crucio, but fails to cast Avada Kedavra 84 |
| 145, 147 | First major Obscurus eruption | Generates regenerating black mist, flies, and hurls rubble; Roy subdues her, leaving her injured and unconscious 145 147 |
| 184 | Practical wandless spellcasting | Successfully casts Scourgify to clean Hermione's dress 184 |
| 194 | Partial Obscurus separation | Newt painlessly extracts a small amount of energy, but identifies her Obscurus as abnormally powerful for her age 194 |
| 213 | Exceptional Transfiguration aptitude | Completes a transformation toy's exercises in under an hour and changes a triangular pyramid into a cube 213 |
| 216, 218 | Broader academic development | Brews basic medicinal Potions and reaches approximately first-year Hogwarts material through private lessons 216 218 |
| 268 | Attempted use of Imperio | Attempts the curse against Hermione, but her damaged wand releases uncontrolled purple magic and incapacitates her and Harry 268 |
| 281 | Effective combat curses | Incapacitates an attacker with Crucio and successfully fires Avada Kedavra, which the second attacker dodges 281 |
| 282 | Evolved Obscurus | Produces battlefield-altering, mind-affecting whirlwinds, prevents Apparition, and drains both attackers' life force; loses control and attacks responding Aurors 282 |
| 330 | Noncombat magical appendages | Manifests four black magical tentacles to hold a book while reading in her hospital room 330 |
Equipment & Items
- Sebastian's Memory Book / Book of the Nameless — A book containing Sebastian Sallow's preserved memories and mindscape. It revealed Mia's heritage and initially served as her Dark Magic training source 63 174.
- Roy's Ancient Magical Power disrupted the book, preventing Sebastian from bringing Mia into its mindscape for a time 177.
- Dumbledore added a memory of himself and an anti-Dark-Magic “anti-addiction” safeguard to it 174 177.
- Its mindscape access eventually recovers, allowing Mia to resume meeting Sebastian; she later studies with the book until dawn while living with the Scamanders 190 267.
- Heart of Africa — An enormous magical diamond inherited through the Sallow family. It purifies Dark Magic but causes Mia extreme pain because it also reacts with her Obscurus 187 188 189.
- Dumbledore Caller — A golden pendant that Mia uses as a means of summoning Dumbledore for protection 183.
- Wand — Her battered wand's exposed core malfunctioned during an attempted Imperio, releasing uncontrolled purple magic 268.
- Hormone Gun — A medical device provided by Roy that Mia uses on herself after being injured or weakened 189.
- Obscurus Treatment Necklace — A gold, rune-covered necklace designed by Newt Scamander and Nicolas Flamel to separate, purify, and reintegrate Obscurus energy without draining the host's vitality. Its proposed ideal power source is the Horned Serpent Gem 230.
- Tiago's Ruby Necklace — A gift from Aisling that Mia eagerly accepts during her hospital reunion, after Roy explains that Tiago ordered the attack on her 331.
Relationships
- Roy Smee — Mia's guardian-like older brother and closest attachment. He treated her illness, built a home for them in Godric's Hollow, and repeatedly risks himself to protect her; Mia chooses to stay with him over the comfort of Hogwarts 2 147 176 177.
- His concern for her treatment motivates efforts to earn money and obtain a Horned Serpent gemstone 206 219.
- After her later attack, he investigates those responsible and vows to kill them. Her continued isolation strains their relationship, but their subsequent reunion is affectionate, and he solemnly promises to secure her release 287 311 330 331.
- Sebastian Sallow — Her ancestor's magical memory copy and first magical mentor. He revealed her Sallow heritage and taught her Dark Magic, though Dumbledore later restricted his instruction 63 174 177.
- Mia confides her fear of death to him, revealing distress she usually hides from her other companions 190.
- Albus Dumbledore — Mia's legal guardian and a cautious mentor. He arranged reduced Ministry examinations, protects her from execution or confinement, and maintains a private pact not to reveal Sebastian's existence to Roy 174 176.
- He personally stops her later rampage and places her under a Deep Sleep Charm. At the Wizengamot hearing, he argues that she was the victim of an attack and requests restoration of his custody and removal of her from high-priority surveillance 284 294.
- He magically recreates her Godric's Hollow bedroom inside her hospital suite 330.
- Newt Scamander — Mia's caretaker and a specialist in Obscurials. He develops a gradual treatment plan intended to cleanse her Obscurus without taking her life 198 218.
- Collaborates with Nicolas Flamel on her treatment necklace and attends the hearing concerning Dumbledore's guardianship 230 294.
- Tina Goldstein — A warm caregiver at the Scamander household who looks after Mia and sees her off when she visits her friends 267.
- Mia affectionately calls her Grandma Tina and hugs her goodbye. Tina also attends the Wizengamot hearing in support of Mia and Dumbledore 267 294.
- Harry Potter — Mia's close friend and someone she regards as her responsibility after Roy asks her to watch over him. Her efforts to protect Harry are sincere but can become dangerously extreme 84 173 267 268.
- Ron Weasley — A friend and frequent companion on Mia's outings and explorations, including the search of the Sallow family home 183 184 187.
- Hermione Granger — Initially fought Mia after a misunderstanding involving Harry. Their hostility softens after Mia apologizes and gives Hermione a wand-like magical aid, which Hermione treasures as a sign of friendship 268 270 280.
- Mia also provides a book on magic and answers Hermione's questions, though she remains uncertain whether Hermione has magical talent 280.
- Mrs. Granger — Shelters Mia and Harry after the wand accident, carries the unconscious Mia into her home, and lets her recover in Hermione's bedroom 270.
- Minerva McGonagall — A protective teacher who nurtures Mia's Transfiguration talent while warning her not to take pride in bloodline supremacy 212 213.
- Severus Snape — Mia's reluctant Potions instructor and medical supporter. Though easily irritated by her persistence, he takes an interest in her potential and circumstances 215 218.
- Aisling Grindelwald — A wealthy acquaintance of Roy's who treats Mia warmly. Mia is suspicious and jealous when she fears Aisling may take Roy's attention away from her 174 178.
- Cedric and Connor — Roy's friends, who entertain Mia at the Leaky Cauldron and explain Hogwarts life and Roy's reputation to her 206.
- Bloody Baron — Recognizes Mia's Slytherin ancestry and speaks to her at unusual length about Sebastian and the founder's descendants. The Fat Friar remarks that she is the student the Baron has valued most in many years 212.
- Filius Flitwick and Pomona Sprout — Among the professors who willingly look after Mia during her pre-term stay at Hogwarts 218.
- Tiago — The mastermind who orders the attack on Mia and watches her evolved Obscurus from a distance. Roy later tells Mia that Tiago and the people behind her attack are dead 282 331.
- Dolores Umbridge — Challenges Dumbledore's defense at the guardianship hearing, questioning whether he can adequately supervise Mia while working and living at Hogwarts 294.
Story Role
Wool's Orphanage and Dark Magic Discovery
Mia begins as a sickly orphan who fears Roy has forgotten her after leaving for Hogwarts. Roy's letter, money, and raven restore her spirits, but her exploration of his possessions leads her to Dark Magic books and Sebastian's Memory Book 55 63.
She keeps her magical studies secret from Roy, hiding the books when he returns and later withholding the truth because she fears criticism of the criminal nature of the spells Sebastian has taught her 64 141.
First Obscurus Outbreak
While studying Horcruxes and arguing with Roy, Mia suffers a catastrophic Obscurus eruption that destroys the orphanage activity room. Roy subdues her without killing her, but she is hospitalized at St. Mungo's after the battle 145 147 173.
The Ministry plans to register her as a “Special Obscurial” and monitor her. After waking from more than a week of unconsciousness, she remains weak from the Obscurus's consumption of her life force and becomes distressed at being separated from Roy 159 173.
Second Chance and New Home
Dumbledore becomes Mia's legal guardian, the Ministry erases the orphanage children's memories of her and Roy, and Mia moves with Roy to Godric's Hollow. Roy completes a cabin for them and tells her that she finally has a home 174 176 177.
Dumbledore explains that enrollment remains possible if Mia can demonstrate control of her Obscurus, pass Ministry assessment, and receive appropriate protective measures. Roy nevertheless worries that the strain of school may be too much for her health 176.
Sallow Legacy and Treatment
Mia investigates the abandoned Sallow home with Harry and Ron, finding the Heart of Africa in a hidden locked box. The gem's purification power proves both hopeful and dangerous, prompting Newt to devise a slow “dialysis” treatment for her Obscurus 187 188 198.
During the visit to the Scamanders, Mia is targeted by Newt's Erumpent, Lina. Roy's lightning spell and Aisling's Crucio stop the creature before it can crush her; Tina and Aisling then attend to her scraped knee 192.
Newt's initial painless extraction experiment confirms that her Obscurus is unusually powerful. His later collaboration with Nicolas Flamel produces a treatment necklace intended to preserve her vitality during purification, making access to the Horned Serpent Gem important both for her recovery and for the effort to protect her from attackers 194 230.
Hogwarts Protection
While temporarily staying at Hogwarts, Mia learns about her possible status as the last surviving Slytherin bloodline, receives private lessons, and becomes beloved by several professors. She remains unable to enroll until she can safely control her Obscurus 212 213 218.
She expresses a desire to join Hufflepuff with Roy rather than assuming she must enter Slytherin because of her ancestry 212. After returning home shortly before term, she is taken into Newt and Tina's care along with Tom the cat 219.
Protective Confinement and New Friendship
Mia spends more than a month confined to the Scamander household for her protection and goes two months without exchanging letters with Harry. Once Dumbledore reports that the attackers have been rounded up, she is allowed to contact her friends and arranges a reunion with Harry and Ron 267.
The outing leads to her fight with Hermione and an attempted Imperio that backfires through her damaged wand. Hermione and her mother help Mia and Harry afterward, bringing them to the Granger home. Mia apologizes, explains the existence of magic, and later shares magical learning materials with Hermione 268 270 280.
Godric's Hollow Rampage
When masked attackers target Mia, she answers with overwhelming Dark Magic and loses control of the Obscurus. During the rampage, she devastates much of Godric's Hollow and drains an attacker's life force, revealing that her Obscurus has evolved into an even greater threat 281 282.
The attackers follow the children after Mia invites Hermione to visit her house. Their assignment is to draw Mia's blood and place a curse on her rather than kill her, but her retaliation escalates into a catastrophic battle 280 282.
Mia ultimately drains both attackers and turns on the arriving Aurors, seriously injuring more than ten. Dumbledore intervenes before she can consume their life force and keeps her restrained under a Deep Sleep Charm. Tiago observes the incident remotely and recognizes that her Obscurus can now feed on others rather than only on Mia herself 282 284.
Investigation and Guardianship Hearing
The attack on Mia drives Roy to seek leave from Hogwarts and investigate the perpetrators himself. With Aisling's help, he examines a disguised key taken from an attacker and attempts to reconstruct the route by which Mia was followed 287.
Dumbledore subsequently faces a Wizengamot hearing over his alleged failure to supervise Mia. The prosecution initially omits the attack that provoked her eruption, but he establishes that two assailants using three wands assaulted her and presents her as the victim. He requests restoration of his guardianship and removal of Mia from the Ministry's high-priority surveillance list 294.
Although Tina believes the proceeding has been arranged to leave Mia in Dumbledore's custody, Umbridge interrupts before the anticipated verdict and challenges his ability to supervise her from Hogwarts 294.
Hospital Isolation and Reunion
Mia remains isolated at St. Mungo's as Christmas approaches. Roy's visit before Operation Wallbreaker ends in an argument because she feels abandoned, leaving him visibly affected 311.
Following Tiago's defeat, Roy brings Mia's friends to the hospital's underground isolation ward. Dumbledore has secured its most luxurious private room and magically recreated her Godric's Hollow bedroom inside it. Mia has spent over a month seeing only carers and medical staff, and she eagerly rushes into Roy's arms when the visitors arrive 330.
During the visit, Roy tells her that Tiago ordered the attack and that those responsible are dead. She accepts Tiago's ruby necklace from Aisling, and the group shares a belated Christmas dinner in her room. Nevertheless, she is not yet permitted to leave isolation. Mia accepts this with greater restraint than during Roy's previous visit, while he embraces her and promises to arrange her release as soon as possible 331.

Trivia
- Mia initially considered a Cleaning Charm more useful than lethal curses because she wanted help tidying her room 84.
- She regularly ordered Tom the unusually intelligent cat to fetch drinks, serve tea, and take out rubbish 84.
- The narration foreshadows that Mia may one day become the “Third Dark Witch Queen” after her first encounter with Roy's Dark Magic books 55.
- She imitates Roy's “Lightning Cyclone Strike” exclamation while experimenting with magic, despite knowing that it is not the name of a specific technique 63.
- Her successful use of sympathy to obtain free ice cream inspires her later appeals to Snape for lessons 183 215.
- She would have preferred her hospital suite to resemble her old orphanage bedroom, but Dumbledore recreates the room from Godric's Hollow because he no longer remembers the orphanage room's appearance 330.
