Ch. 221The Celestials
Plot points
- Thanos revises his escape plan after Gamil suggests sealing the One Below All inside him. Since his system can convert what enters his body into points, he sees the plan as a chance to gain enormous power—but keeps his escape options open.
- He tells the Dimension Lords how the sealing would work and offers to become the vessel, presenting the choice as a willing sacrifice for the universe. The lords praise him as a hero, unaware of his private motive.
- Thanos asks Nightmare for a Dimension Heart so he can become a Dimension Lord and grow stronger before facing the One Below All. Nightmare reluctantly gives him a spare; Thanos notices it contains the same mysterious “power of creation” he sensed when his avatar created a universe.
- Thanos asks Surtur to finish an Infinity Gauntlet, and Surtur promises it within a week, waiving payment.
- Thanos argues that the gathered lords cannot defeat the One Below All alone and proposes seeking help from Valhalla and powerful independent groups, including the Escapists, Crusaders, and Gatebreakers.
- Three hostile Celestials suddenly arrive. Thanos realizes Victor must have alerted them. Their leader demands that the Dimension Lords submit to the “First God.”
Character developments and interactions
- Thanos balances self-preservation with ambition: he keeps an escape plan while pursuing the Dimension Heart and the potential rewards of containing the One Below All. He skillfully lets others interpret his plan as self-sacrifice.
- Nightmare reluctantly parts with a valuable Dimension Heart, despite having hoped to sell it.
- Surtur agrees to finish the Gauntlet without payment, partly out of respect for Thanos’s supposed sacrifice and partly to avoid public criticism.
- The Dimension Lords admire Thanos and begin discussing alliances, but hesitate when confronted by the Celestials’ overwhelming power.
- Victor’s apparent betrayal is revealed when Thanos notices his disappearance and infers that he summoned the Celestials.
Significant themes
- Selflessness versus self-interest: Thanos’s heroic image contrasts with his hidden desire for power and system points.
- Power and survival: The characters seek allies, artifacts, and stronger abilities to face threats far beyond their current strength.
- Freedom from control: The independent organizations represent people who reject being pawns of the Celestials.
- Creation and cosmic origins: The Dimension Heart’s power of creation raises questions about its connection to universe-making.
