Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sequence 7 | 17 | While maintaining the Fool’s image, Klein is privately identified as only Sequence 7; the Tarot Club believes him to be a far greater existence. 17 |
| Sequence 5 | 316 | By this point, he can draw more deeply on the Gray Fog and partially “restore” a contaminated Beyonder Characteristic within Sefirah Castle. 316 |
| Sequence 4 — Demi-God | 394, 395 | His revenge against Ince Zangwill fully digests his potion, enabling advancement; afterward, he is confirmed to have become a Demi-God. 394 395 |
| Sequence 2 — Angel | 466, 477 | Klein is recognized as an Angel, though Odys notes that the Fool remains Sequence 2 despite the authority projected through the Gray Fog. 466 477 |
Appearance
Klein’s ordinary form is that of a young black-haired man. Above the Gray Fog, he presents himself as an indistinct, imposing figure seated at the head of a bronze long table, his features hidden by the surrounding mist. 5
- Black hair in his civilian identity. 5
- Commonly conceals himself through alternate identities, disguises, Faceless abilities, and staged supernatural appearances. 73 141 343
- His Fool persona is defined by the Gray Fog, a vague silhouette, and an intentionally unfathomable demeanor. 5 6
Personality
Klein is cautious, analytical, and highly conscious of the gap between his projected authority and his actual strength. He routinely uses divination, Spirit Vision, false identities, and carefully chosen wording before committing to a plan. His early treatment of Odys demonstrates this: Klein verifies answers through divination while preserving the image of an omniscient hidden existence. 5 6
He treats the Tarot Club as a mutually beneficial alliance rather than a conventional faith. Although he actively protects members such as Odys, Derrick, and Leonard, he often does so through indirect intervention so that neither his limitations nor his civilian identities are exposed. 6 20 79 394
Klein is capable of ruthless pragmatism against hostile Beyonders, but he remains deeply attached to his former Nighthawks companions and unwilling to abandon people endangered by larger conspiracies. His final execution of Ince Zangwill is both a tactical victory and a personal act of remembrance for Dunn Smith, Leonard, Daly, and the destroyed Blackthorn Security Company. 201 303 394
Abilities & Skills
Sefirah Castle and the Gray Fog
Klein’s defining advantage is his command of the space Above the Gray Fog, where he sits as the Fool and convenes the Tarot Club.
- Pulls selected spirit bodies into the hall above the Gray Fog for weekly gatherings. 6
- Controls access to Sefirah Castle; Odys can enter only after Klein opens the gate. 5
- Uses crimson stars and ritual responses to communicate with, protect, and receive offerings from Club members. 20 24
- Facilitates exchanges of money, weapons, materials, and information between members separated by vast distances. 24 57
- Uses the Gray Fog to protect against divination and to obscure his true condition. 6 342
Divination and Spiritual Perception
Klein frequently relies on divination before accepting commissions, recruiting allies, or acting on uncertain intelligence.
- Uses Dream Divination and Recall to identify Odys as a witness to the museum theft. 5
- Verifies whether Odys’s statements are truthful while questioning him above the Gray Fog. 5
- Uses pendulum divination to assess the danger of investigative commissions. 73
- Employs Spirit Vision to inspect Beyonders’ conditions and recognize advancement. 56 129 237
- Can be harmed by excessively dangerous divinations; probing Odys’s connection to the Gray Fog violently damages him. 6
Seer Pathway Abilities
Klein develops a broad set of Seer-pathway techniques, particularly suited to deception, escape, control, and layered combat.
- Air Bullets — Fires compressed-air attacks capable of disrupting or injuring supernatural targets. 141 343
- Paper Figurine Substitute — Avoids lethal or decisive attacks by replacing himself with a paper substitute. 141
- Flaming Jump — Traverses short distances through flame and uses it to seize objectives during combat. 26
- Spirit Body Thread manipulation — Interferes with an enemy’s movement and escape, notably assisting Odys against Darren the Wraith. 342 343
- Marionettes and historical projections — Uses controlled bodies, summoned projections, and illusionary decoys in high-level operations. 343 429
Fool Persona and Angelic Projection
Klein exploits the Tarot Club’s reverence for the Fool while using limited displays of overwhelming authority to discourage enemies.
- Projects a terrifying twelve-winged Angel that suppresses the will of hostile Beyonders and forces them to kneel. 20
- Uses such displays to protect Odys while concealing that the manifestation is one of his few early methods of projecting great power. 20
- Punishes Cattleya for hinting at the Tarot Club’s existence by exposing her to a vision of the True Creator’s ravings. 316
- Maintains an image of calm omniscience even when relying on improvisation, incomplete intelligence, or the reactions of others. 5 327 467
Investigation, Acting, and False Identities
Klein uses multiple identities to access different social circles and pursue cases without connecting them to the Fool.
- Sherlock Moriarty — Operates as a detective and accepts investigative commissions in Backlund. 73
- Gehrman Sparrow / World — Carries out dangerous maritime operations and handles the Fool’s more ruthless public dealings. 227 319
- Dwayne Dantès — Maintains a wealthy civilian identity in Backlund. 415
- Admiral Amelius — Successfully impersonates the admiral during an operation on Oravi Island. 301 303
- Uses disguises, staged encounters, misleading statements, and alternate personas to separate his actions from his true identity. 73 141 343
Equipment and Artifacts
- Creeping Hunger — A powerful Sealed Artifact used to release abilities such as Holy Light and to consume captured enemies. 227 303
- Azik’s Copper Whistle — Redirects undead creatures, including the Zombies that attack the group in Bansy Harbor. 227
- Black Emperor card — Supports Klein’s early Angel projection above the Gray Fog. 20
- Darkless Cross — A relic of the Ancient Sun God capable of removing mental contamination from Beyonder Characteristics. 421
- Misfortune Charm — Empowered by the Evernight Goddess; disrupts Ince Zangwill during the revenge operation. 394
- Death Knell — Used during Klein’s escape from Bayam while pursued by high-level Rose School enemies. 343
Relationships
- Odys Gal / Hermit — Initially a suspicious witness to Klein’s museum theft, then the newest member of the Tarot Club. Their relationship develops into a close tactical partnership built on shared secrets, mutual protection, and eventually recognition as fellow transmigrators. 5 6 343 415
- Audrey Hall / Justice — An early Tarot Club member whose reports, diary pages, and psychological insight are central to the Club. Klein warns and protects her from powerful manipulators such as Hvin Rambis. 14 386 409
- Derrick Berg / Sun — A younger Club member from the City of Silver. Klein repeatedly protects him from Amon-related threats and supports the City of Silver through the Tarot Club. 79 386
- Leonard Mitchell / Star — Klein’s former Nighthawks colleague and a fellow survivor of the Tingen tragedy. Klein enables Leonard to personally contribute to Ince Zangwill’s defeat. 394 415
- Daly Simone — A former Nighthawks colleague who fights beside Leonard during the revenge against Zangwill; Klein helps create the conditions for both to confront their past. 394
- Azik Eggers — A powerful protector whom Klein calls upon when trapped by Trissy and Ince Zangwill’s schemes. 201
- Bernadette Gustav / Queen Mystic — A powerful and initially threatening figure whom Klein first encounters during the museum theft; later, he seeks a formal meeting through Odys. 2 409
- Cattleya / High Priestess — A Tarot Club member connected to Bernadette. Klein punishes her after she compromises the Club’s secrecy but spares her life. 316
- Ince Zangwill — Klein’s personal enemy and the killer responsible for the destruction of the Tingen Nighthawks team. Klein ultimately executes him. 394
- Medici / Red Angel — Klein investigates Medici’s history and later works with Odys to negotiate with Medici’s evil spirit. 198 421
Story Role / Major Arcs
Roselle Memorial Exhibition and the Tarot Club
Klein first appears as a spirit body attempting to steal two bookmarks from the Roselle Memorial Exhibition. He escapes Bernadette’s interrogation, but the incident creates Odys’s connection to the Gray Fog. 2
When Odys later reaches Sefirah Castle, Klein interrogates him, verifies his answers through divination, and ultimately recruits him into the Tarot Club under the codename Hermit. The decision is partly pragmatic: Klein recognizes that Odys’s unusual connection to the Gray Fog may repeatedly draw him to the castle. 5 6
Establishing the Fool’s Authority
Klein protects Odys during the attack on Gall Herbal Shop by manifesting a twelve-winged Angel through the Gray Fog. The display defeats the attackers’ resistance and reinforces the belief that Odys is protected by a terrifying hidden existence. 20
He expands the Tarot Club beyond information exchange by using its authority to guarantee weapon rentals and material transactions. Odys’s Arrow of Flames and scepter become early examples of the Club functioning as a trusted supernatural marketplace. 24 26
Investigations and Mutual Suspicion
Klein investigates Odys’s civilian and criminal connections while Odys gradually recognizes inconsistencies among Klein’s identities. Their mutual suspicion is particularly clear when Odys confronts a false “Klein” created by the Star Ring’s abnormal space and tests the real Klein through personal details. 73 84 141
Despite their caution, the two repeatedly cooperate when their interests align: against Rose School members, in Bansy Harbor, during the search for Elven ruins, and in maritime operations. 227 244 319
Rescue from the Rose School
When Klein’s position in Bayam becomes compromised, Odys turns a rescue operation into a planned counterattack. Klein and Odys coordinate with the Sword of Dawn crew, the Nighthawks, and Bishop Dean to hunt Rose School members Darren and Donik. 342
Their combined operation destroys the Rose School force in Bayam. Klein’s deception and Spirit Body Thread control complement Odys’s battlefield control, while Klein’s escape becomes possible only through several layers of coordinated protection. 343
Revenge Against Ince Zangwill
Klein’s campaign against Ince Zangwill culminates at Resurrection Square. The Evernight Goddess’s Misfortune, Ludwell’s stolen Fate, Daly’s Underworld gate, Leonard’s determination, and Odys’s intervention steadily eliminate Zangwill’s escape routes. 394
Klein personally executes Zangwill while naming the people and institutions destroyed by his actions. Adam later confirms that the revenge has fully digested Klein’s potion and prepared him for advancement. 394
Recognition as Fellow Transmigrators
Odys eventually reveals that he understands Klein’s hidden identity and references to their shared former world. Their coded exchange—“Palace jade nectar wine” and “One hundred and eighty a cup”—confirms their shared origin without requiring either to disclose every secret. 415
This recognition changes their relationship from cautious allies to countrymen able to rely on a basic level of mutual trust during increasingly dangerous operations. 415 421
War, Divine Secrets, and High-Level Cooperation
As Odys becomes a major political and military figure, Klein increasingly relies on him for protection, intelligence, crafted artifacts, and connections to Bernadette. They negotiate with Medici’s evil spirit, coordinate against George III’s mausoleums, and share information about the Blasphemy Slates, Great Old Ones, and the origin of Beyonder Characteristics. 421 429 477 479
Klein’s role shifts from maintaining the Tarot Club’s early façade to guiding an organization whose members trade Sequence 5 resources, divine history, national intelligence, and assistance in future wars. 370 409 479
