Ch. 281Upgrade Data
Key plot points and events
- Baimu reflects that Rotom’s versatility has largely eclipsed Porygon, then learns that Dr. Akihabara has been trying to use Porygon as the intelligence for an ocean-monitoring device.
- Shelly explains that the New Aqua Gang’s miniature submarine successfully collected seafloor data but exploded during recovery. Its Porygon survived, but the Black Box containing the data disappeared.
- Baimu realizes that the Black Box he found likely came from the New Aqua Gang. He considers returning it, but worries that the organization may not have fully changed its ways. The timing of the submarine incident and a reported Lugia sighting near Dewford Town makes him suspect the missing data could matter.
- Rather than investigate the Gang’s confidential information himself, Baimu decides to give the Black Box to the International Police for them to examine.
- Before leaving, he asks Dr. Akihabara how to obtain an Upgrade for his own Porygon. The doctor says he left his Upgrade in Kanto, but Baimu can use a portable transfer device to send Porygon to his assistant there.
- Dr. Akihabara advises Baimu to strengthen his bond with Porygon before evolving it: Porygon2’s advanced learning system can download information from the internet, and it might grow contemptuous of its Trainer.
Character development and interactions
- Baimu remains cautious despite his pleasant visit. He weighs the New Aqua Gang’s apparent reforms against past harm and chooses to involve the International Police rather than act on suspicion alone. He also shows interest in developing his Porygon.
- Shelly presents herself as welcoming and composed, describing the Gang’s research work and inviting Baimu to contact them in the future. She agrees to let him speak with Dr. Akihabara.
- Dr. Akihabara is enthusiastic about his work and helpful with Baimu’s questions, though his warning about Porygon2 reveals that technological advancement may complicate the Trainer–Pokémon relationship.
- Baimu’s conversation with Shelly shifts from casual discussion of the failed submarine to his discovery of the Black Box’s likely origin. His meeting with the doctor then turns the chapter toward Porygon’s possible evolution.
Significant themes
- Trust and reform: The New Aqua Gang seems to be rebuilding its reputation, but Baimu does not assume that its past is truly behind it.
- Responsibility and oversight: Baimu chooses the International Police to assess the Black Box, recognizing the limits of acting on speculation.
- Technology and its risks: The chapter contrasts Porygon’s potential with Rotom’s practical advantages and raises concerns about unintended consequences—from exploding inventions to an AI that might judge its Trainer.
- The Trainer–Pokémon bond: Evolution is presented as more than a technical upgrade; mutual trust may matter when a Pokémon becomes more intelligent.
