Ch. 541Glasses Woman
Plot points and events
- Modi arrives at Maple Café and is ushered into the kitchen by a man who treats him with deference. Green watches indirectly and wonders whether Modi is acting as a friend or enemy.
- The man later orders Green to follow him. When Green refuses, he sends Erha to attack. Erha seemingly kills the man, but Saintess Xiweina Ye reveals that both the man and the café owner were disguises: the attacker was a wooden puppet, and she had posed as the owner.
- Xiweina says Modi passed her test and made a deal: he will do several tasks for her in exchange for what he wants. Green remains skeptical.
- Xiweina offers Green a contract to eliminate five people in Becklan City, giving him just three days. Green rejects her attempt to pressure him through Grand Duke Mora and insists on negotiating his own price and terms.
- Green suspects the assignment is a pretext and that Xiweina has a larger agenda. He stays at a nearby luxury hotel, intending to find out more.
- In a basement beneath the café, Xiweina reviews reports of the intensifying war between the Holy Light Church and the Divine Eagle Empire. She opposes rushing into war, believing the Church’s God-Making Plan is extremely unlikely to succeed, but the war faction wants conflict for political and personal gain.
- A woman with gold-rimmed glasses reports Green’s movements. Her ability lets her gather detailed intelligence within three kilometers, and she begins monitoring him.
Character developments
- Green remains wary, independent, and unwilling to be manipulated. He uses Erha decisively when provoked and recognizes Xiweina’s dangerous trap, but his curiosity about the wider political situation grows.
- Xiweina Ye shifts from playful deception to businesslike negotiation. Though a powerful Church leader, she privately doubts the war and the chance of creating a deity; she nevertheless manipulates others to advance her plans.
- Modi is shown to have enough value—or ability—to pass Xiweina’s test and secure a deal, though his purpose remains unclear.
- Erha acts fiercely on Green’s command, but the puppet’s convincing illusion leaves even him bewildered.
- The woman with glasses is introduced as a capable, calculating intelligence-gatherer who will help keep Green under surveillance.
Significant themes
- Manipulation and mistrust: Xiweina tests, deceives, and bargains with Green, while Green tries to avoid being used as a pawn.
- Power and independence: Green insists that employment does not make him anyone’s subordinate.
- Political ambition versus principle: The Church’s war faction exploits religious rhetoric for status and advantage, despite the risks and Xiweina’s doubts.
- Uncertainty and hidden agendas: The five targets, Modi’s deal, and the conflict between Mora and the Church all point to broader schemes Green does not yet understand.
Character interactions
- Green observes Modi’s private meeting, then clashes with Xiweina’s agent when he refuses to obey an order.
- Green and Xiweina trade accusations and negotiate the proposed contract: she invokes Mora, while Green insists on his own terms.
- Xiweina’s subordinate reports Green’s movements, and Xiweina orders her to watch him—turning their encounter into an ongoing contest of surveillance and strategy.
