Background / History

Kaido was born in the Woka Kingdom and became its strongest warrior by the age of ten. Forty-three years before his death, the kingdom’s ruler sold him to the Marines in exchange for participation rights in the Reverie. Kaido escaped, gained a 70 million Beli bounty, and repeatedly allowed himself to be captured when hungry so he could eat before escaping again. 105

At fifteen, Kaido rampaged on Hachinosu before joining the Rocks Pirates at Whitebeard’s invitation. He met Charlotte Linlin there; after the Rocks Pirates disbanded at Valley of Gods, Linlin gave him the Fish-Fish Fruit, Mythical Zoan, Azure Dragon Form. 105

Kaido later built the Beasts Pirates, recruiting powerful subordinates including King, Queen, and Jack. His rule over Wano alongside Kurozumi Orochi turned the country into a weapon-production center and left much of its population impoverished and oppressed. 90 105

Caesar Clown and Donquixote Doflamingo supplied Kaido with artificial Devil Fruits intended to create an enhanced army, though many of Caesar’s creations were defective. 68 After Swain dismantled Doflamingo’s organization and came to Wano, Kaido personally confronted him in Kuri. 86 94 96

He enjoyed fighting powerful enemies and became increasingly excited as Swain adapted to his techniques. Kaido’s behavior in battle could shift abruptly: after being wounded, he drank sake, cried, laughed, and transformed before resuming the fight. 102

As Wano’s ruler, Kaido was ruthless and exploitative. His regime supported weapons production and empowered cruel subordinates, while his treatment of Yamato included beatings and explosive Seastone restraints intended to prevent her escape. 90 108

Wano Country Conflict

Swain arrived in Wano intending to defeat Kaido and openly declared this objective to Great Tengu. Kaido returned to Wano after ordering Jack to prepare wine and meat, then confronted Swain in dragon form. 94 96

Kaido initially dominated the duel through superior endurance, physical power, and Haki. He recognized Swain’s strength, ordered Jack to suppress the rebellion instead of interfering, and chose to continue their fight alone. 97 98

Defeat and Death

Swain’s repeated adaptation forced Kaido to take him seriously. After Swain awakened the Sea Fruit Form, Kaido’s fire, weapon techniques, and dragon transformations were systematically countered by awakened seawater control. 102 104

Kaido used Shoryu: Kaen Hakke in a final attempt to win, but Swain answered with Emperor Art: Slaughter of the Masses. The clash cracked Kaido’s horns, and Swain later pierced his head with a trident, ending both Kaido’s life and his rule over Wano. 105 106
