Background

Norton is a Lunarian who carries the tribe’s ingrained principle of absolute loyalty to an acknowledged leader. Before joining Swain, he had endured a difficult life; after his brother’s death, he continually killed people who harmed him. Alcohol became his primary means of escaping those memories. 26 28

By the time Swain introduced him in Uwin Town, Norton had accepted him as his captain and crewmate. He followed Swain on a raid against Hanson’s slave-trading warehouse without asking for an explanation, treating the order to kill as sufficient. 26

Norton is blunt, aloof, and intensely protective of Swain’s dignity. He became angry when Luke repeatedly ignored Swain at Water 7, and he immediately rejected Kuzan’s demand that Swain surrender him. 27 31

His loyalty is reciprocal rather than mindless obedience. Swain deliberately gives him freedom to act as a companion rather than a subordinate, while Norton repeatedly risks himself to protect his captain—including interrupting Kuzan’s attempted execution of Swain. 28 31

He is also reckless, fond of drinking, and often irresponsible outside combat. Norton joins Swain before the assault on Hanson’s slave-trading warehouse. He kills the guards while Swain immobilizes fleeing criminals with seawater, helping free the captives and destroy the operation. 26

Water 7

During the voyage to Water 7, Norton masters Armament and Observation Haki under Swain. His public flight after drinking at Blueno’s tavern exposes his Lunarian identity to CP9 and triggers their assassination attempt. 27 28

He assists Swain against CP9 by burning Blueno with a fireball, but later misunderstands Swain’s command to stop Blueno and allows Lucci’s group to escape. 28 29

Battle with Kuzan
