Power Progression

Background

Norton is a Lunarian who carries the tribe’s ingrained principle of absolute loyalty to an acknowledged leader. Before joining Swain, he had endured a difficult life; after his brother’s death, he continually killed people who harmed him. Alcohol became his primary means of escaping those memories. 26 28

As a child, Norton was called a monster because of his heritage. A kind Marine took him in as an older brother, but the man was later murdered by comrades seeking money and credit for his achievements. Norton initially came to hate all Marines. Swain’s decision to spare Momonga because he cared for civilians reminded Norton that Marines like his brother could still exist. 25

Swain rescued Norton from a confrontation with Vice Admirals Momonga and Onigumo at Lardo Manor. Norton confided his dream of a place without inequality, disease, discrimination, or war. Swain promised to help find such a country or build one with him, and Norton accepted his invitation to join the crew. 25

By the time Swain introduced him in Uwin Town, Norton had accepted him as his captain and crewmate. He followed Swain on a raid against Hanson’s slave-trading warehouse without asking for an explanation, treating the order to kill as sufficient. 26

Appearance

Norton’s Lunarian traits make him conspicuous enough that Swain considers his identity dangerous to reveal.

Personality

Norton is blunt, aloof, and intensely protective of Swain’s dignity. He became angry when Luke repeatedly ignored Swain at Water 7, and he immediately rejected Kuzan’s demand that Swain surrender him. 27 31

His loyalty is reciprocal rather than mindless obedience. Swain deliberately gives him freedom to act as a companion rather than a subordinate, while Norton repeatedly risks himself to protect his captain—including interrupting Kuzan’s attempted execution of Swain. 28 31 Their bond began with Swain’s promise to help fulfill Norton’s dream of an equal, peaceful country. 25

He is also reckless, fond of drinking, and often irresponsible outside combat. He ignored Swain’s warning to remain hidden, drank heavily at Blueno’s tavern, spent supply money on alcohol, and pawned his helmet. 28 38 Following the Sabaody battle, however, his failure to protect Swain leaves him deeply self-critical and drives him to seek stronger opponents. 42 44 He persists through repeated injuries during his challenges against Mihawk and takes Mihawk’s criticism of his Observation Haki seriously. 52 53

Norton despises abuse, particularly because of his own past, and reacts furiously to King’s torture of Kawamatsu and Caesar’s treatment of children. 71 100 He can also be affectionate and protective: he becomes attached to Bonney and defends her during her stay with the crew. 91 As Swain’s power grows, Norton carries out a violent purge of dissenters in Wano and acts brutally toward captured enemy pirates. 111 112 He remains comfortable teasing Swain and, alongside Law, openly criticizes his captain’s disappearance during a later battle. 111 165

Uwin Town

Swain rescues Norton at Lardo Manor after confronting Momonga and Onigumo. Swain’s compassion and his promise to help realize Norton’s dream persuade him to become Swain’s first true companion. 25

Norton joins Swain before the assault on Hanson’s slave-trading warehouse. He kills the guards while Swain immobilizes fleeing criminals with seawater, helping free the captives and destroy the operation. 26

Water 7

During the voyage to Water 7, Norton masters Armament and Observation Haki under Swain. His public flight after drinking at Blueno’s tavern exposes his Lunarian identity to CP9 and triggers their assassination attempt. 27 28

He assists Swain against CP9 by burning Blueno with a fireball, but later misunderstands Swain’s command to stop Blueno and allows Lucci’s group to escape. 28 29

Battle with Kuzan

Norton challenges Kuzan at Water 7 and initially uses Flame Emperor, but Kuzan gradually wears him down by targeting the reduction in his flame-based defense. 30 When Kuzan freezes Swain and prepares to kill him, Norton unleashes a speed burst that Kuzan cannot perceive and kicks the Admiral away. 31 He later carries the exhausted Swain away from the battle. 32

Sabaody Archipelago

Norton burns the Celestial Dragons’ flag with his flaming blade on Swain’s command, making the Neptune crew’s defiance public. 35 He later supports Swain against Akainu with Flame Dragon, but is outclassed by Kizaru when the second Admiral arrives. 40 41

After Swain orders the crew to escape and promises to reunite in one year, Norton leaves to train independently, determined to become strong enough to protect his captain. 42 He disguises himself, defeats local gang members, and begins searching for stronger opponents—considering challenges against the Seven Warlords of the Sea. 44

Independent Training and Reunion

Norton travels to Kuraigana Island and challenges Mihawk. Mihawk breaks his blade and mask in their first encounter but spares him. Norton returns day after day despite wounds to his arm and wings, gradually improving the Observation Haki that Mihawk judged deficient. By the end of October, he can fight Mihawk for ten minutes without losing. 51 52 53

Seeking another test, Norton challenges the Kuja on Amazon Lily. He defeats Mary and overpowers Hancock, then apologizes when he learns she is Swain’s lover. He later reunites with Jordi at Sabaody and receives new armor from him. 56 57

Fish-Man Island and Punk Hazard

Norton stops two pirates from robbing Fish-Man Island’s hidden treasury, kills one, and captures the other. The surviving thief’s account leads Norton and Swain to suspect a wider World Government plot. 63

At Punk Hazard, Norton is assigned to capture Caesar while Swain seeks the imprisoned children and Law destroys the factories. Norton attacks Caesar’s laboratory, overwhelms and kills Vergo, and uses Flame Dragon to defeat Caesar’s attempted escape. He keeps Caesar alive but burns his leg before leaving him unconscious. 71 72

Dragon Fruit and Wano

Swain gives Norton a Vegapunk-created Mythical Zoan Fruit in preparation for challenging Kaido. Norton gains a pink eastern dragon form and demonstrates its fire breath, though he initially cannot control a hybrid form. 76 During Bonney and Kuma’s visit, he uses the transformation to catch an octopus after the crew’s food runs out. 91

In Wano, Norton and Law enter Ringo disguised as samurai. After finding Kawamatsu gravely wounded, Norton fights King in an aerial battle that reveals both warriors’ Lunarian heritage. Norton survives King’s powerful attack, retaliates with Meteor, and clashes with him using Flame Emperor. Norton is shown as the victor after their final explosion. 97 100 101

Following Kaido’s defeat, Norton kills Kurozumi Orochi, who survives seven apparent deaths before the eighth proves final. Swain’s disgust at Norton bringing him Orochi’s head frustrates Norton, who burns it and leaves to drink. 108

Wano Rule and Hachinosu

Norton leads soldiers in a violent purge of figures resisting Swain’s reforms in Wano. He subsequently participates in the assault on Hachinosu, where Swain’s forces conquer the island. Norton captures the fast and elusive pirate Vik Raglen and recognizes his unusual strength. 111 112

Later Conflict with the Marines

Norton arrives as reinforcements and confronts Kizaru again, now fighting with pink scales and a hybrid transformation. He unleashes Lotus-Gathering Flame Dragon, cracks Kizaru’s light barrier with Haki-coated scales, and briefly suppresses him in aerial combat. Kizaru’s mirrors, lasers, and copies force Norton to take a giant dragon form, whose reduced speed Kizaru exploits. 160 161 162

After Swain defeats Saint Saturn and the opposing forces retreat, Norton and Law criticize Swain at a post-battle meeting for disappearing during the enemy’s successful sneak attack. 165
