Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Transmigrated infant and Devil Fruit user 2–4 Swain retains adult memories from another world. After eating a mysterious blue fruit, he is confirmed to be a Devil Fruit user and later awakens control over seawater. The fruit also leaves him powerless in the ocean. 2 4
Sea Fruit control 4 Woli identifies Swain’s ability as the legendary Sea Fruit, a Logia capable of producing and controlling seawater, walls, and powerful gales. 4
Six Powers foundation 5 At age three, Swain uses Rankyaku to cut down a large tree and begins learning the foundations of two Six Powers techniques. 5
Six Powers and basic Armament Haki 6 By age thirteen, he can use Rankyaku, Soru, and Sea Bind. He also reinforces seawater with Armament Haki during combat. 6
Vice Admiral-level combat benchmark 7 Swain kills a giant Sea King instantly with Sea Thrust, using hundreds of Armament Haki-coated water arrows. Cardiff estimates his strength at roughly Marine Headquarters vice-admiral level. 7
Shock Gun and advanced battlefield control 9 Swain develops Shock Gun, condensing sea-based shockwaves into a single point. He uses it to destroy a lizard’s limb and damage its internal organs before finishing it through elementalization. 9
Sea Tentacle Kill and rudimentary Observation Haki 12 He creates black, Armament Haki-coated seawater tentacles with a Seastone-like weakening effect. Scattered water droplets serve as an early detection system. 12
Conqueror’s Haki awakened 13 Facing execution by CP0 agent Back, Swain’s refusal to accept death triggers a burst of Conqueror’s Haki accompanied by black lightning. 13
Training in all Three Haki 15–16 Woli begins formally teaching Swain Armament, Observation, and Conqueror’s Haki. After three years, Swain can consciously release Conqueror’s Haki, evade attacks while blindfolded, and manipulate enormous waves. 15 16
Coliseum champion 19–20 Using the alias “Kaido,” Swain wins seventeen consecutive matches and defeats champion Isofu, overpowering his Armament Haki, teleportation, and Tiger-Tiger Fruit transformation. 19 20
Defeated Marine Headquarters vice admiral 24 Swain overwhelms Onigumo with superior speed, Armament Haki, and seawater techniques. Sea Bind drains Onigumo’s strength, while seawater nullifies his Zoan abilities. 24
Admiral-comparable combatant 31 Swain exchanges Haki-infused blows with Kuzan and uses Conqueror’s Haki to drive the admiral backward. Kuzan recognizes his extraordinary potential. 31
Sea God’s Blessing 32 Swain surrounds his limbs with blue rings and Conqueror’s Haki, greatly increasing his physical power and defense. Mirror Sea Moon injures Kuzan, but the technique rapidly drains his stamina. 32
Survival against Akainu and Kizaru 39–42 Swain battles Akainu, protects civilians from Great Eruption, survives severe magma injuries, and escapes the combined pursuit of two admirals through a massive seawater vessel. 39 41 42

Background / History

Swain is a transmigrator from another world who enters the One Piece world in the body of a human infant. Although physically helpless, he retains adult memories and knowledge of the world. He is brought to a remote island by the Wise Ape later known as Woli, who becomes his guardian and teacher. 2

Woli reveals that Swain has a connection to the great pirate Rocks. Swain’s limited inherited memories indicate that his mother was a beautiful dancer, while his father disappeared at sea while searching for traces of Swain’s grandfather. His exact parentage remains unknown. 3

As a child, Swain studies history under Woli, particularly the truths suppressed by the Celestial Dragons. His growing opposition to their rule leads him to consider joining the Revolutionary Army before deciding that becoming a free pirate would better suit his ideals. Woli promises to let him set sail after he turns eighteen. 5

Woli later explains that Swain’s Sea Fruit was stolen from CP0 ten years earlier to prevent the Celestial Dragons from reclaiming it. The World Government placed a billion-Beli bounty on information leading to Woli, making Swain’s existence a political threat from childhood onward. 15

Swain spends years training on the island, fighting increasingly powerful beasts and developing his Devil Fruit and Haki. He finally leaves after three additional years of intensive training, but immediately reveals his lack of practical experience by reading Cardiff’s map upside down and sailing in the wrong direction. 16

Appearance

Swain is described as a handsome young man whose years of harsh training make him appear older and more hardened than his peers. At thirteen, his features are no longer tender and his complexion reflects his constant physical conditioning. 6 After setting sail, he commonly wears simple casual clothing such as a tank top and shorts. 46

Distinguishing features include:

  • A youthful appearance that contrasts with his exceptional combat power.
  • A body capable of transforming into seawater through the Sea Fruit.
  • Blue rings and black Conqueror’s Haki when using Sea God’s Blessing. 32
  • A wanted poster identifying him as Rocks D. Swain. 34

Personality

Swain values freedom and believes overwhelming strength is necessary to survive without being controlled by the Celestial Dragons. His opposition to oppression is genuine, but his methods range from rescue and charity to intimidation, execution, and deliberate psychological cruelty. 2 36

He is confident, competitive, and often shameless. Swain openly mocks stronger-looking opponents, uses provocative aliases, and treats his enormous bounty as a source of satisfaction rather than fear. He also has a large appetite and an enthusiasm for meat, which frequently contrasts with his otherwise intimidating reputation. 19 20 34

Despite his arrogance, Swain repeatedly protects people who are in danger. He rescues Cardiff without accepting payment, shields civilians from Akainu’s attacks, destroys a slave-trading facility, frees Roland from indentured labor, and risks his life so his crew can escape Sabaody. 7 26 37 39 42

Swain is strategically minded but inexperienced in ordinary life. He can analyze Haki and combat at a high level, yet lacks basic navigation knowledge and sometimes relies on deception or reckless improvisation to solve problems. 16 17

Abilities & Skills

Sea Fruit

The Sea Fruit is a legendary Logia that allows Swain to create, control, and transform into seawater. Its former user was reportedly powerful enough to consider washing away the Red Line and reconnecting the world’s seas. 4 24

Applications include:

  • Creating massive waves, walls, gales, and seawater barriers.
  • Redirecting currents to accelerate ships.
  • Transforming into seawater to evade physical attacks.
  • Flying or hovering through controlled water movement.
  • Restraining enemies with Sea Bind and Sea Tentacles.
  • Weakening or nullifying other Devil Fruit users through seawater.
  • Crushing Sea Kings by compressing the surrounding water.
  • Creating large seawater vessels and portal-like formations for escape. 7 24 42 46

Limits include:

  • Swain loses his strength and begins drowning when submerged in the ocean, as with other Devil Fruit users. 4
  • Powerful opponents can counter his seawater control; Kuzan’s Ice Age freezes the surrounding ocean. 31
  • Large-scale techniques consume substantial stamina, particularly Sea God’s Blessing and Mirror Sea Moon. 32
  • His Ryuo output is not yet sufficient to maintain a prolonged defense against Akainu’s magma. 39

Sea Fruit Techniques

Sea Thrust

Swain creates hundreds of arrow-like seawater projectiles and coats them with Armament Haki. The technique kills a giant Sea King instantly. 7

Shock Gun

Shock Gun condenses the shockwaves produced by sea tremors into a single point, producing a focused internal attack. On land, its maximum destructive scale is limited by Swain’s physical strength and can reach roughly the scale of scattering a village. 9

Sea Bind and Sea Tentacle Kill

These techniques form restraints and tentacles from seawater. When reinforced with black Armament Haki, the tentacles can destroy massive rocks and weaken Devil Fruit users in a Seastone-like manner. 9 12 24

Mirror Sea Moon

Swain creates mirrored seawater surfaces containing projected moons. Breaking the mirrors releases space-warping shockwaves capable of damaging Kuzan and collapsing a massive Ice Wall. 32

Sea God’s Blessing

This enhancement surrounds Swain’s limbs with blue rings and Conqueror’s Haki, greatly increasing his attack power, physical strength, and defense.

  • Allows Swain to withstand attacks from Akainu and Kuzan.
  • Raises his physical defense to a level he compares with the Lunarian body.
  • Causes rapid stamina depletion during prolonged use.
  • The technique is not identified as Conqueror’s Haki Infusion. 32 39

Armament Haki

Swain uses Armament Haki to reinforce his body, fists, water constructs, arrows, chains, and other attacks.

  • Coats Sea Thrust projectiles.
  • Allows seawater tentacles to weaken Devil Fruit users.
  • Strengthens his physical defense against Kuzan and Akainu.
  • Enables him to fight opponents with highly condensed Armament Haki.
  • His early mastery is insufficient to maintain a sustained defense against Akainu’s magma. 7 9 24 31 39

Observation Haki

Swain develops Observation Haki under Woli’s training.

  • Detects hostile figures through scattered water droplets.
  • Anticipates attacks such as Back’s Shigan.
  • Trains by evading strikes while blindfolded.
  • Improves his understanding of movement prediction after studying Kuzan’s ability to read breathing and physical cues. 12 13 16 33

Conqueror’s Haki

Swain awakens Conqueror’s Haki while refusing to accept execution by CP0 agent Back. The initial burst knocks Back away and is accompanied by black lightning. 13

Later applications include:

  • Releasing powerful waves of Conqueror’s Haki.
  • Reinforcing his body and attacks.
  • Driving Kuzan backward during a Haki clash.
  • Strengthening Sea God’s Blessing. 16 31 32

Swain seeks to learn Conqueror’s Haki Infusion from Rayleigh, indicating that he has not yet fully mastered that advanced application. 45

Six Powers and Martial Arts

Swain learns the Six Powers from Woli and combines them with his Sea Fruit.

  • Rankyaku — launches crescent-shaped slashes.
  • Soru — provides high-speed movement.
  • Shigan — used during early combat training and against the lizard.
  • Sea Bind — combines Six Powers movement with seawater restraints.
  • Ape Palm — a physical technique taught by Woli.
  • Enhance — uses overlapping blue rings to multiply the force of a punch. 5 6 9 10 20

Combat Analysis and Adaptation

Swain studies opponents during battle and adjusts his tactics when attacks stop working. Against the lizard, he alternates between ranged attacks, battlefield control, elemental movement, and targeted strikes after the creature adapts to Shock Gun. 9

Against stronger opponents such as Kuzan and Akainu, Swain relies on deception, seawater restraints, mirrors, shields, and civilian protection rather than attempting to overpower them directly. 32 39

Physical Resilience

Swain possesses exceptional recovery and endurance. He recovers from CP0 injuries in roughly three days and later survives catastrophic internal damage after his battle at Sabaody. Luo must repair his lungs, heart, and spleen, yet Swain remains alive and awakens after a week. 15 42 44

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • The Neptune — Swain’s large three-story ship, built from Adam Tree wood. It is approximately fifty meters long and twenty meters wide, with a lawn, dining areas, and exercise equipment. 33
  • Cardiff’s map — A map leading to Uwin Town, given to Swain after he rescues Cardiff. 7
  • Woli’s gold — Used to obtain money and supplies in Uwin Town. 17
  • Simple boat — Swain uses Woli’s repaired boat when first leaving the island. 16

Relationships

  • Woli — Guardian, teacher, and father figure. Woli raises Swain, teaches him history, combat, and Haki, protects him from CP0, and eventually lets him sail independently. 3 5 15 16
  • Norton — First mate and loyal crewmate. Swain protects Norton from Kuzan and orders him to escape during the Sabaody crisis; Norton later trains to become strong enough to protect Swain. 26 31 42
  • Jordi — Shipwright and crew member recruited in Water 7. He coats the Neptune and later works on explosive experiments. 34 37 43
  • Roland — Purser and crewmate. Swain frees her from indentured labor and assigns her responsibility for supplies and domestic work. 37
  • Cardiff — Merchant rescued from a Sea King. Cardiff gives Swain a map to Uwin Town and promises future assistance. 7
  • Luo — Potential ship doctor and temporary ally. Luo saves Swain’s life and transports him to Amazon Lily; Swain later invites him to join the Neptune crew. 44 45 50
  • Boa Hancock — Swain’s romantic interest. Their relationship begins after Swain violates Hancock while she is restrained; he later expresses regret, promises to destroy the Celestial Dragons, and publicly claims to be her male consort. Hancock eventually begins accepting him emotionally. 47 49
  • Silvers Rayleigh — Powerful former pirate who protects Swain from Akainu and Kizaru. Swain later seeks Rayleigh’s help in learning Conqueror’s Haki Infusion. 41 45
  • Kuzan — Marine admiral and major rival. Their battle at Water 7 ends without a clear victor, though Kuzan’s greater experience exposes Swain’s combat limitations. 31 33
  • Akainu — Marine admiral and enemy. Akainu nearly kills Swain at Sabaody, but Swain survives and escapes with Rayleigh’s assistance. 39 41 42
  • CP0 agent Back — Assassin sent to recover the Sea Fruit. Back attacks Swain after discovering that he has eaten it, but Woli kills him. 13 15
