Background / History
After the Three Clans’ Calamity, Hongjun visited Penglai Island and identified Heaven-Earth Daoist Li Yi as a fellow Chaos Demon God. He sought Li Yi as the fourth combatant needed to challenge Demon Ancestor Luohou and the Immortal-Slaying Sword Formation, alongside Yang Mei and Yin-Yang Daoist 13.
Hongjun framed the coming Dao-Devil War as a mission to prevent Luohou’s Killing Dao from devastating the Primordial World. Li Yi, however, suspected that Hongjun had knowingly allowed Luohou’s schemes to develop so that Hongjun could later claim the resulting Merit and Fortune 14. To secure Li Yi’s participation, Hongjun gave him the Shanhe Sheji Diagram, though Li Yi continued to press for rights over Luohou’s treasures 14.
During the Dao-Devil War, Hongjun deployed his Three Corpses to locate and seize the four swords sustaining Luohou’s formation. His Evil Corpse used the fleeing Yin-Yang Daoist as bait, striking him into Luohou’s path before escaping to pursue the formation core 18. Yin-Yang Daoist was killed soon afterward and entrusted his remains and treasures to Li Yi, denouncing Hongjun’s betrayal 19.
Hongjun’s expected rewards were undermined when Li Yi captured three formation swords, trapped Luohou, and received the greatest share of Heavenly Dao Merit after Luohou’s self-destruction. Hongjun received less than half of Li Yi’s Merit, was forced by oath to surrender the Immortal-Ending Sword, and failed to recover the Taiji Diagram hidden by Li Yi 20.
Appearance
Hongjun appears as an elderly Daoist in white robes, usually maintaining a composed and unruffled bearing even when his plans are disrupted 13 27.
- White-robed Daoist attire 13 27
- Often sits upon a jade platform in Purple Cloud Palace while lecturing 27
- His calm exterior frequently conceals anger, resentment, or calculation 20 32
Personality
Hongjun presents himself as a compassionate defender of the Primordial World, invoking the need to eliminate demons and protect living beings from Luohou’s slaughter 14 15. Privately, he is intensely ambitious: he seeks Merit, Fortune, disciples, and Heavenly Dao authority to attain Sagehood and become the Heavenly Dao’s representative 25 31.
He is patient and politically cautious when public confrontation would harm his reputation. Even after discovering that his disciples’ incarnations had secretly gone to Yingzhou Island to hear Li Yi teach, he concealed his anger rather than expose their disloyalty before the gathered cultivators 44.
Hongjun also treats allies as expendable pieces when they obstruct his goals. His Evil Corpse sacrificed Yin-Yang Daoist to Luohou in order to continue searching for the formation core, revealing the ruthlessness behind his righteous image 18.
Abilities & Skills
Peak Quasi-Saint Cultivation
Hongjun is a peak Quasi-Saint who stands among the Primordial World’s most powerful cultivators. He seeks to unite his Three Corpses and use Heavenly Dao authority to advance to Sagehood 25 31.
- His Three Corpses can act as independent incarnations with mid-stage Quasi-Saint strength 18.
- He considered Li Yi’s mid-stage Quasi-Saint cultivation sufficient for the Dao-Devil War, though he still viewed Li Yi as a useful fourth combatant rather than an equal partner 13.
- His plans rely on gaining enough Heavenly Dao authority to complete Three Corpses Unity 31 35.
Dao of Karma and Heavenly Secrets
Hongjun is highly skilled in deduction and uses the Fragment of the Creation Jade Disc to calculate karma, future opportunities, and the positions of hidden targets 16 25.
- Located the four formation eyes of the Immortal-Slaying Sword Formation through deduction during the Dao-Devil War 16.
- Identified the whereabouts of Laozi’s and Yuanshi’s Kind Corpses through their master-disciple karmic ties 44.
- Uses insight into future Sage positions and karmic connections to recruit disciples and expand his influence 28 31.
- His deductions can be disrupted by Li Yi’s actions, including Li Yi’s seizure of the Immortal-Slaying Sword and interference with expected Sage arrangements 17 27.
Three Corpses Severing Method
Hongjun teaches the Three Corpses Severing Method as a route to rapid Quasi-Saint advancement and uses it himself to cultivate powerful incarnations 35 43.
- Allows practitioners to sever Kind, Evil, and Self Corpses through Spirit Treasures 35.
- Enabled Laozi, Yuanshi, Jieyin, and Zhunti to reach the Quasi-Saint realm through severing their Kind Corpses 35 43.
- Hongjun maintains that the method can bring his disciples to peak Quasi-Saint, even if they cannot complete Three Corpses Unity through their own talent 46.
- Li Yi exposes that reunifying the corpses requires three naturally nurtured Spirit Treasures of the same origin, making successful completion nearly impossible for most practitioners 45.
Dao Lectures and Heavenly Dao Authority
Hongjun lectures at Purple Cloud Palace to create karmic ties with major cultivators and increase his control over Heavenly Dao authority 26 31.
- Reserved six Spirit Treasure cushions for cultivators connected to future Heavenly Dao Sage positions 27 28.
- Accepted Laozi, Yuanshi, Jieyin, and Zhunti as direct disciples after their breakthroughs 35.
- Lost the allegiance of Tongtian and Nuwa after they chose Li Yi’s teachings instead; their karmic connections with Hongjun were severed 31.
- His authority declined after Li Yi’s clearer Dao lectures drew cultivators away from Purple Cloud Palace and produced visible breakthroughs 34 35.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Fragment of the Creation Jade Disc — A treasure used for heavenly-secret deduction, karmic calculations, and locating the formation eyes of the Immortal-Slaying Sword Formation 16 25.
- Pangu Banner — Defensive treasure activated against Luohou’s self-destruction, though Hongjun was still blasted away by the explosion 20.
- Shanhe Sheji Diagram — A Supreme-grade Innate Spirit Treasure Hongjun gave Li Yi in exchange for assistance against Luohou; it can trap enemies and defend its holder 14.

- Six Spirit Treasure cushions — Seats placed before Hongjun at Purple Cloud Palace, each connected to major karmic opportunities and future Sage positions 27 28.
Relationships
- Li Yi / Heaven-Earth Daoist / Qiankun — Rival for Merit, Heavenly Dao authority, and the future role of Heavenly Dao representative. Hongjun recruited him for the Dao-Devil War but later sought to suppress or kill him after attaining Sagehood 13 25 31.
- Luohou — Dao rival and Demon Ancestor whom Hongjun sought to destroy for both the Primordial World’s safety and the immense Merit attached to Luohou’s defeat 14 19.
- Yang Mei — Fellow Chaos Demon God and temporary Dao-Devil War ally. Yang Mei became distrustful and departed coldly after Hongjun’s explanation for Yin-Yang Daoist’s death 13 20.
- Yin-Yang Daoist — Recruited ally whom Hongjun’s Evil Corpse used as bait against Luohou. Yin-Yang died blaming Hongjun for his fate 18 19.
- Laozi — Direct disciple and practitioner of the Three Corpses Severing Method. Laozi grew resentful after learning of the method’s requirements for Three Corpses Unity 35 45.
- Yuanshi — Direct disciple who frequently defends and flatters Hongjun, but later confronted him over the apparent dead end of the Three Corpses method 32 35 45.
- Jieyin and Zhunti — Direct disciples who sought Sage opportunities through Hongjun’s teachings, then doubted him after Li Yi exposed the Three Corpses method’s limitation 35 45.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Dao-Devil War
Hongjun gathered Yang Mei, Yin-Yang Daoist, and Li Yi to break Luohou’s Immortal-Slaying Sword Formation. Although he used his Three Corpses to pursue the formation swords, Li Yi’s independent actions claimed most of the achievement and Merit from the conflict 15 17 19 20.
Contest for Heavenly Dao Authority
After failing to monopolize the Dao-Devil War’s rewards, Hongjun decided to spread the Dao at Purple Cloud Palace and bind future Sages to himself through karmic obligations. Li Yi announced his own lecture first, undermining Hongjun’s initiative from the outset 25 26.
Rivalry with Heaven-Earth Daoist
Hongjun repeatedly denounced Li Yi’s teachings as unorthodox while attempting to preserve his own status as Dao Ancestor. Li Yi’s lectures produced greater breakthroughs, drew away Hongjun’s audience, and shifted Heavenly Dao authority in Li Yi’s favor 28 32 34.
Three Corpses Method Crisis
Hongjun’s authority suffered another blow when Li Yi publicly revealed that the Three Corpses Severing Method required three same-origin Spirit Treasures for final reunification. Laozi, Yuanshi, Jieyin, and Zhunti questioned whether Hongjun had led them into a dead end, forcing him to defend the method by blaming their insufficient talent 45 46.
