Power Progression

Digimon have an evolutionary hierarchy. The documented advances below are individual examples, not a progression shared by every Digimon 73 78.

Background

The Digital World exists within a branch of Yggdrasill, the World Tree. It is a dimension inhabited by Digimon; Su He later expends divine power to make that world real 71 79. His earlier proposed story—that a Digital World had long been hidden beneath Douluo Star and that eight partners would die saving it—was a plan to gather faith, not an established account of its history 21.

Its planets have seen wars between the angel army, Demon Lords, Royal Knights, and Final Millenniumon’s forces. Darkness gathered from fallen Digimon gives rise to Final Millenniumon, whose later revival threatens both the Digital World and the real world 73 74.

Abilities & Biology

Evolution and data

• Digimon evolve through successive stages; the amount of data they possess affects their growth. Training alone can strengthen them but does not necessarily make them larger 76 78.
• Defeated Digimon can dissolve into data, some of which other Digimon absorb. Zeromaru uses accumulated data, aided by a Digivice, to reach new forms 86 91.
• Evolution has risks: a Digimon can be forced back to an earlier form after severe damage, while unstable data fusion can end in collapse 87 91 93.

Digivices and human partners

• When Digimon cannot resolve a Digital World crisis alone, the world creates Digivices and selects beings from the real world. The devices bring the chosen humans into the Digital World and give them new bodies after their original bodies are destroyed 76.
• Digivices can display Digimon data and enable partner evolutions. They can also open a gateway for later visits between partners 75 82 89 95.

Vulnerabilities

• Virus Gears can rewrite a Digimon’s data, disrupt its systems, and control its mind; a gear planted in Andromon makes him attack against his will 82 83.
• The real world lacks enough data force to sustain the visiting Digimon indefinitely, so remaining there could cause them to degenerate 95.

Human Partners

Major Arcs

• Ancient wars: Lucemon’s angels defeat and seal six Demon Lords. Final Millenniumon then attacks the weakened Digital World; Lucemon and Royal Knights destroy his body, but Moon Millenniumon escapes. Lucemon later becomes a Demon Lord himself and is sealed by ten ancient Mega Digimon 73 74.
• The chosen humans: Eight humans arrive with Digivices and partners. Their mission is to contain a rift linked to the Dark Ocean, whose darkness corrupts Digimon 75 76.
• Gear Village and the Metal Empire: The partners fight through attacks on Gear Village, free the controlled Andromon, and oppose MetalEtemon’s forces. Tai and Zeromaru eventually defeat MetalEtemon and take the Interstellar Rail Train onward 79 83 85 88.
• Final Millenniumon’s revival: Digimon from several factions defend the chosen humans. Examon sacrifices himself, and Zeromaru’s Future Mode destroys Final Millenniumon’s restored body; Chronomon seals his surviving consciousness, Moon Millenniumon 91 92 93 94.
• Aftermath: Chronomon restores both Douluo Stars. The Digimon return to the Digital World to avoid degeneration, though their partners retain Digivices for future visits. The awakened World Tree later rewards the aid given to its world by evolving Douluo Star 94 95 97.
