Background and history

Ling was a 24-year-old game lover whose life had been marked by the deaths of his family and others at his orphanage. Xier Ya accidentally killed him with lightning sent through his internet connection, then reincarnated him in another world as a Spirit named Qian Lingmeng. She later admits that making his new body female was partly revenge for his mockery of her gaming skills 1 33 416.

Lingmeng first appears in Japan at the center of a Spacequake. The AST attacks her as an unregistered Spirit, but she disables its members without killing them. Reading a soldier’s memories teaches her why Spirits are hunted; she sympathizes with the soldiers’ losses while rejecting blame for Spacequakes that predate her arrival 1 2 3.

After a period of isolation, she visits Tengu City and befriends Shido Itsuka, who tries to protect her from three thugs without knowing she can defeat them herself. Ratatoskr later seeks to seal her powers through a date with him. Lingmeng initially refuses because she remembers living as a man and sees Shido as a friend, but eventually trusts him with her past and agrees to the seal 4 5 24 27 33 57.

Her conflict with DEM becomes far more violent when its Wizards threaten Tengu City to prevent her from using Spirit Power. She kills more than two hundred of them and is shaken by her first experience of killing people. Later, after fighting Inverse Spirits while her power is sealed, Lingmeng herself goes Inverse. Xier Ya offers to return her to her original world, but she chooses to stay with Shido and the others 47 54 405 410 416.

Appearance

Lingmeng has long golden hair, including a braid along its right side, and pink-and-blue eyes. She often favors clothes she considers less overtly feminine 61 286.

Personality

Lingmeng is playful, sarcastic, and fond of games, teasing, and making others laugh. Her confidence can collapse in situations she finds frightening or embarrassing—particularly haunted houses and unwanted attention to her changed body 38 40 161 183.

She generally prefers restraint and conversation to killing, especially when civilians are at risk. Her isolation and fear that others will suffer because of her also make her guarded about close relationships. Over time, she grows more comfortable relying on Shido and the other Spirits, although she continues to deny or joke about some of her feelings 3 33 47 54 233 416.

Elemental Spirit

Lingmeng’s Angel is a patterned, trident-shaped golden staff accompanied by seven floating rainbow-colored crystals. It commands twelve abilities: metal, wood, water, fire, earth, wind, lightning, light, darkness, space, time, and mind 2 3 58.

• Elemental attacks and defenses: Creates barriers, restraining vines, ice traps, fire, lightning, and powerful winds; she can combine elements into a destructive sphere 2 3 54 267.
• Space and darkness: Teleports, redirects attacks through space, and makes herself intangible 8 9 267 402.
• Time: Slows or stops time. Stopping time is effective but has a long recovery period during a later duel 9 55 267.
• Mind: Reads memories and creates illusions; she uses both while investigating Shido’s past and fighting Kurumi 3 138 155.

Inverse powers

In her Inverse state, Lingmeng wields Entropy Apostle, a lance-shaped Demon King, and Ain Soph, a domain in which she can impose her will 410 412.

• Entropy Apostle: Its demonstrated techniques include Devour, Void, Oppression, Chaos, Terror, and Negativity, allowing her to erase a target, nullify an attack, weaken powers, influence opponents, force painful memories, or create duplicates 410 418.
• Ain Soph: Can erase attacks, drain Spirit Power, immobilize Spirits, and reproduce another Spirit’s weapon within its space 412 418.
• Control: After regaining her sense of self, she uses duplicates to defeat a DEM force rather than killing its members 418.
