Background and History

Tsunade is a Senju shinobi and a former student of Hiruzen Sarutobi. At the Ninja Academy graduation exam, she and fellow former student Jiraiya wager on a match between their prospective pupils, Liuyun and Minato. Liuyun’s immediate victory wins her the bet. Assigned to instruct Liuyun, Kushina and Mikoto as Team 6, Tsunade nevertheless forgets their first meeting; the students find her asleep at the Senju compound 18 22.

She tests all three students in sparring. Kushina’s strength convinces her that the girl could learn the Strength of a Hundred Fist alongside Uzumaki sealing techniques. Tsunade also praises Mikoto’s tactical use of weapons and Fire Release, though Liuyun’s genjutsu proves much harder for her to overcome 29 30.

During the Second Shinobi World War, Tsunade commands a squad assigned to raid the Sand Ninja’s main camp. She later takes charge of Mikoto’s intensive training and works to treat poisoned Konoha shinobi. After the war, she proposes placing a medical ninja on every squad, but Hiruzen rejects the plan because Konoha lacks enough medical personnel 41 60 86 89.

The Senju Clan’s losses and its conflict with Konoha’s leadership strain Tsunade’s loyalty to her former teacher. Her younger brother Nawaki’s murder devastates her; Liuyun takes her to investigate, then brings her to their home in the Land of Demons. She accepts leaving Konoha, although she hopes its leaders were not involved. Later, Konoha’s leaders consider her for Hokage but conclude that Nawaki’s death has made her return impossible 72 134 140 161.

Personality

Tsunade is competitive and quick to gamble: Jiraiya’s proposed wager immediately interests her, and Liuyun later gives her gambling money to lift her spirits. She can also be teasing and vindictive in training, giving Kushina and Mikoto matching black eyes after praising their performances 18 29 81.

Her confidence is paired with a strong sense of responsibility. She proceeds with a dangerous Sand-camp raid because Konoha’s frontline depends on it, and she refuses to rest while poisoned patients still need treatment. Although Liuyun offers to protect her, she chooses to return to war so she can grow stronger herself 41 80 86.
