Yang Jian grew up in Guanjiang Mouth, where his family was destroyed after the Western Heavenly Court arrested his mother, Yao Ji. Yao Ji was ultimately suppressed beneath Peach Mountain for violating heavenly law, leaving Yang Jian with a lasting determination to rescue her and oppose Haotian. 694 697 698

He is the second son of Yang Tianyou and Yao Ji, born after Yang Jiao and before Yang Chan. Yang Tianyou chose the name Jian to express his hope that his son would eradicate evil, assist an enlightened ruler, and build a meritorious career. Before the Heavenly Court's intervention, the family lived harmoniously at Guanjiang Mouth. 684

The concealment of Guanjiang Mouth's heavenly secrets delayed Qin Mu's discovery of Yang Jian until he was already a boy of around ten. Recognizing his importance to the Investiture of the Gods Great Calamity, Qin Mu decided to intervene.
