Background / History
Haotian served Dao Ancestor Hongjun at Zixiao Palace for countless years. As Hongjun's attendant, he represented Zixiao Palace's will to many powers, and even Saints treated his arrival seriously. He appeared to enforce Hongjun's edict ending the large-scale war between the Human and Demon races. 213 289
After the reopening of the Heavenly Court, Haotian and Yaochi entered its service. Haotian expected that his position as Hongjun's attendant and his lack of ties to any sect made him a suitable candidate for Heavenly Emperor, but Qin Mu was appointed instead, with the avatar Di Zun administering the court. Though Qin Mu arranged positions for Haotian and Yaochi, Haotian regarded his own post as nominal and powerless. 582 583 600
Primordial Heavenly Venerate exploited Haotian's dissatisfaction, telling him that the throne should have been his. Jie Yin and Zhun Ti then offered a concrete path: establish a rival Western Heavenly Court. Haotian accepted their support and secretly recruited dissatisfied Heavenly Court immortals and gods. 583 590 591 598
His conspiracy was exposed in the Lingxiao Treasure Hall. Haotian openly renounced Di Zun's court, declared that he too could rule a Heavenly Court, and led his followers in rebellion. Di Zun easily defeated him twice, but Primordial Heavenly Venerate, Jie Yin, and Zhun Ti intervened to take Haotian and his defectors away. 600 601 602 604
The three Saints opened a space in the Western Lands, allowing Haotian to establish the Western Heavenly Court and proclaim himself its ruler. Its fortune raised him to Sub-@@REF_ENTITY_11740082@@, and he began expanding the court through diplomacy, recruitment, and alliances. 607 608 638 639 651
During the struggle for Hongmeng Purple Qi, Hongjun personally bestowed the prize upon Haotian. Haotian refined it for a thousand years and successfully became a Saint, transforming the Western Heavenly Court into a Saint-backed power. 669 671 674
Personality
Haotian is proud of his past status as Hongjun's attendant and initially expects deference because of it. His treatment of the Underworld's gatekeeper and his demand that Qin Mu come out to meet him show this habitual arrogance; when Yunxiao rebukes him and Qin Mu's aura unsettles him, he quickly becomes conciliatory. 290
His central motivation is resentment at being passed over for the Heavenly Emperor position. Haotian frames his ambition as fairness—arguing that, unlike sect-affiliated candidates, he would have ruled impartially—but he is receptive to manipulation by those who validate his grievance. 583 590 600
As Western Heavenly Emperor, he becomes increasingly calculating and expansionist. He recruits officials, courts independent sects, seeks control over the Human Emperor's fortune, and attempts to secure the Western Heavenly Court's survival through the Investiture List. 598 638 639
Despite his ambition, Haotian remains cautious around stronger figures. He is unnerved while inviting Primordial Heavenly Venerate and Tongtian, and relies heavily on the backing of allied Saints. 615 616
