Ch. 221Rex Dies!
Plot points
- Hundreds of Liches unleash a coordinated Ice Block attack meant to kill Rex. He counters it with a glowing Lesser Rune of Dispel, which erases the magic and clears the sky.
- Dar’Khan is stunned and initially suspects a casting error. After briefly wondering whether Rex can repeatedly neutralize his magic, he decides the ability must have a cost and orders another attack.
- The Liches cannot immediately cast Ice Block again, so Dar’Khan joins the fight himself. Meanwhile, most of Rex’s summoned Furbolgs are killed, and the Undead turn their attention from the temple toward Rex.
- Exhausted and poisoned, Rex realizes he is unlikely to escape the elite Undead surrounding him. He drops his heavy sword for a lighter saber, then uses the last of his Holy Light to hurl it at Dar’Khan.
Character developments and interactions
- Rex shifts from confident would-be rescuer to a fighter confronting near-certain death. Though his body is failing, his mind stays clear, and he makes one final attack rather than surrendering.
- Dar’Khan is shaken by the rune’s power but quickly recovers his resolve. Unable to understand the dispelling effect, he underestimates Rex’s ability to use it again and presses the attack.
- The Liches are confused by the disappearance of their spell, while the surrounding Undead remain indifferent and continue fighting. Dar’Khan intimidates one Lich for answers, then directs his forces against Rex.
Significant themes
- Power and its limits: Rex’s remarkable counterspell cannot by itself overcome exhaustion, poison, and overwhelming numbers.
- Misunderstanding and assumptions: Dar’Khan applies the ordinary belief that powerful abilities carry a cost, not knowing how the Warcraft System works.
- Defiance in the face of death: Rex recognizes how desperate his situation is but still chooses to strike back.
