Background / History
Tanjiro grew up in the mountains in a family that had made charcoal for generations. His parents were Tanjuro and Kie, and his family passed down the Hinokami Kagura 11 24 30 32.
While Tanjiro was away, his home was attacked. He returned to find his family dead and his younger sister, Nezuko, transformed into a demon. Despite her transformation, she had never eaten anyone. Restoring her humanity became his central goal 12 40.
Giyu Tomioka sent the siblings to Sakonji Urokodaki. At a shrine near Mount Sagiri, Tanjiro encountered Lin Guang while struggling against a demon. Nezuko intervened, and Lin Guang killed it. Urokodaki then challenged Tanjiro to accept responsibility if Nezuko ever harmed an innocent person 1 2.
Tanjiro later dreams of an ancestor meeting a swordsman from the Sengoku Period. Lin Guang identifies the swordsman as Yoriichi Tsugikuni and explains that the family’s contact with him allowed a form of Sun Breathing to be passed down 83.
By the aftermath of the final battle against Muzan, Nezuko has become human again. Tanjiro visits Lin Guang with her to express their gratitude and seek an explanation for her remaining ice-control ability 128.
Appearance
- Hair and eyes: Both have a reddish tint, prompting Haganezuka to call him a “Child of Bright Red Flame” 11.
- Forehead: Bears a scar used by headquarters to identify him 38.
- Clothing: Wears a Demon Slayer Corps uniform beneath his usual black-and-green checkered robe 12.
- Earrings: Wears ornaments resembling hanafuda cards; Muzan uses them to identify him as a target 19 22.
- Travel gear: Carries Nezuko in a wooden box on his back during the day 12.
Personality
Tanjiro’s compassion extends beyond humans. After helping defeat the Hand Demon, he takes its remaining hand and prays that it will not become a demon in its next life. He also recognizes Tamayo and Yushiro as individuals worthy of trust rather than treating all demons as enemies 6 21 23.
His devotion to Nezuko is both protective and determined. He refuses to abandon the search for a cure despite ominous rumors about black Nichirin Blades, and he fiercely objects when Yushiro calls her ugly. He nevertheless promises to kill her and take his own life if she harms innocent people 2 12 20.
Strong emotions can undermine his judgment in combat. The Hand Demon’s taunts disrupt his breathing, while his urgency to question the Swamp Demon leads him into another dangerous situation. Lin Guang repeatedly teaches him to remain composed and prioritize survival 5 6 14.
He is receptive to guidance but sometimes painfully blunt. His sincere compliment about Inosuke’s face only provokes more hostility. Lin Guang’s overwhelming strength inspires him, though it also briefly makes him question whether he can ever catch up 22 28.
His sympathy for bereaved people reflects his own losses. When Kazumi angrily dismisses his attempts at comfort, Tanjiro responds without resentment and encourages him to continue living. Witnessing the suffering caused by the Swamp Demon broadens Tanjiro’s resolve to oppose Muzan for humanity’s sake, rather than solely for revenge 16.
Tanjiro is willing to challenge authority to protect others. He calls Tengen Uzui a human trafficker for attempting to take Aoi and the mansion’s caregivers on a mission, then volunteers himself and his companions in Aoi’s place. At the Swordsmith Village, he defends Kotetsu from Muichiro and argues that swordsmen and swordsmiths depend on one another 67 68 93.
He remains considerate even toward difficult acquaintances. Concerned that Genya is missing meals, he proposes bringing him rice balls. He also accepts responsibility for damaging his Nichirin Blade and intends to apologize to Haganezuka rather than blaming the swordsmith 91 92.
Abilities & Skills
Water Breathing
Tanjiro masters Water Breathing through Urokodaki’s training, supplemented by regular advice and sparring with Lin Guang 3.
| Form | Demonstrated application |
|---|---|
| First Form: Water Surface Slash | Beheads a short-haired demon during Final Selection 4. |
| Second Form: Water Wheel | Strikes the Spider-Faced Demon’s arm while defending Inosuke, but cannot sever it 36. |
| Third Form: Flowing Dance | Uses alongside Lin Guang to cut through the Hand Demon’s attacking arms and close the distance 6. |
| Fourth Form: Striking Tide | Cuts through two of Daki’s sashes while fighting alongside Lin Guang and Nezuko 75. |
| Fourth Form: Striking Tide: Turbulent | Counters Daki’s multidirectional sash attacks, repeatedly changes direction in midair, and cuts away the section holding Koinatsu 72. |
| Eighth Form: Waterfall Basin | Cuts through the Hand Demon’s attacks emerging from underground 6. |
- His breathing becomes disordered when he loses his composure, reducing his effectiveness 5.
- His swordsmanship is not yet sufficient to overcome every demon’s durability; the Spider-Faced Demon resists his Water Wheel strike 36.
- His aerial control improves enough for Daki to acknowledge his movements after he frees Koinatsu, although she immediately knocks him back with a punch 72.
Exceptional Sense of Smell
Tanjiro’s keen sense of smell supports tracking, threat detection, and judgments about others 6 13 21 31.
- Tracking: Remembers Kazumi’s scent and follows faint demon traces through a town 13.
- Hidden threats: Detects the Hand Demon’s underground attacks and locates the concealed Swamp Demon 5 6 14.
- Identification: Recognizes Muzan by the scent left at his family’s home 18.
- Honesty and character: Detects that Tamayo is not lying, recognizes Zenitsu as kind and strong, and finds no lies in Lin Guang’s explanation about Nezuko 21 31 32.
- Limit: Masked scents cause him to underestimate the number of demons inside the Drum Mansion until he enters 26 27.
- Lin Guang’s unusual scent: Notices during Final Selection that Lin Guang has no scent, although approaching him produces a slight chill 7.
Hinokami Kagura
Tanjiro adapts the Hinokami Kagura inherited from his family into swordsmanship after Lin Guang suggests that Water Breathing may not be his best-suited style 24 32.
- Uses it against a demon whose hands can become blades during the Drum Mansion mission 32.
- Finds it effective, but reports a substantial stamina cost 32.
- Initially does not understand its nature; Lin Guang tells him that he will learn more someday 32.
- Asks Kyojuro Rengoku about the kagura, explaining that his sickly father could perform it in freezing snow. Rengoku initially knows nothing about it, but later researches the subject through their correspondence 55 116.
- After Tanjiro recounts his ancestral dream, Lin Guang identifies the inherited technique as a form of Sun Breathing connected to Yoriichi Tsugikuni 83.
- Against Akaza, his Sun Breathing attacks inflict wounds that temporarily resist the demon’s regeneration even after ordinary decapitation has ceased to be fatal 113.
| Technique | Demonstrated application |
|---|---|
| Dance | A flame-wreathed, arcing slash that severs Karaku’s head during the Swordsmith Village attack. The severed head subsequently produces another clone rather than ending the battle 95. |
| Flame Wheel | A flame-wreathed, arcing vertical slash aimed at Gyutaro’s left arm, accelerated through Shave 77. |
| Glorious Radiance | A spiraling downward slash against Akaza that temporarily prevents the resulting wounds from regenerating 113. |
Shave
Lin Guang gives Tanjiro a scroll teaching Shave, a combat technique described as pushing beyond ordinary bodily limits 25.
- By the Hashira confrontation, Tanjiro has received instruction but cannot perform it with Lin Guang’s ease 41.
- By the time Lin Guang distributes additional Six Powers scrolls, Tanjiro is explicitly identified as having learned Shave 65.
- Uses it to appear in front of Tengen Uzui for a headbutt. Uzui is still faster and dodges, causing Tanjiro to fall 67.
- Successfully incorporates it into combat against Gyutaro, combining its speed with Hinokami Kagura: Flame Wheel 77.
Headbutts
- Knocks off Inosuke’s boar mask with a full-force headbutt; Inosuke later collapses, which Tanjiro suspects is a concussion 28.
- Tanjiro’s own head does not bleed afterward. Lin Guang compares its hardness to stone 29.
- Attempts a Shave-assisted headbutt against Tengen Uzui, but fails to hit him 67.
Animal Communication
- Understands Zenitsu’s Little Sparrow well enough to relay its complaints about Zenitsu refusing work, bothering girls, and snoring loudly 25.
Total Concentration: Constant
Tanjiro practices maintaining Total Concentration breathing twenty-four hours a day, a technique Shinobu explains will dramatically improve basic physical fitness 52.
- At the time he explains the method to Zenitsu and Inosuke, sustaining it throughout the day still requires intense concentration 52.
- Readily shares his practice method with his companions and encourages their efforts 52 53.
Iron Body
- Receives an Iron Body skill scroll from Lin Guang. The technique is described as making the user’s body as hard as stone 65.
- The available events establish that he receives the instruction, but do not show a named Iron Body activation 65 67.
Advanced Swordsmanship and Combat Assessment
- Improves through training with Yoriichi Type Zero under Kotetsu’s supervision, eventually identifying an opening and breaking the doll’s neck with a strike 94.
- Recognizes during the Hantengu battle that beheading an Upper Rank demon may not be sufficient, drawing on his experience with Gyutaro to search for additional conditions 95.
- After the Swordsmith Village battle, his recovery from severe injuries within six days is described as evidence that he is very close to Hashira level 104.
- During the Infinity Castle battle, he fights alongside Lin Guang and Giyu against Akaza. Akaza praises his strength, although a subsequent surprise attack fails and leaves Tanjiro injured by a kick 111.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Black Nichirin Blade — Forged by Haganezuka from Tanjiro’s selected material. Turns pitch-black when drawn; Urokodaki explains that black blades are rare and their properties remain poorly understood. It is badly damaged during the battle against Upper Rank Six, prompting Tanjiro to visit the Swordsmith Village for a replacement 9 11 12 91.
- Nezuko’s carrying box — Made by Urokodaki from lightweight mist cloud cedar and reinforced with rock lacquer for improved strength and sealing. A shoulder strap breaks during his fight with Daki, forcing him to place the box on a roof rather than continue fighting with it on his back 12 72.
- Disaster-Repelling Mask — A fox mask supplied by Urokodaki before Final Selection. The Hand Demon recognizes it as the mark of one of Urokodaki’s students 4 5.
- Shave scroll — Given to him by Lin Guang before the Drum Mansion mission 25.
- Iron Body scroll — Given to him by Lin Guang when the latter distributes additional Six Powers techniques to the group 65.
- Blade from Yoriichi Type Zero — Discovered inside the mechanical doll after Tanjiro breaks its neck. Tanjiro and Kotetsu decide that the blade, possibly dating to the Sengoku Period, should go to Tanjiro 94.
- Kasugai Crow — Delivers Corps assignments and travel orders 12 24 32.
- Potions supplied by Lin Guang — Lin Guang observes that the potions given to Tanjiro and Zenitsu appear effective; Tanjiro reports feeling physically well. Shinobu later determines that these potions contain body-strengthening energy whose absorption is aided by exercise or combat 32 63.
Relationships
- Nezuko Kamado — Younger sister. Tanjiro protects her, carries her during daylight, and seeks a way to restore her humanity. She later saves him from Gyutaro’s poison with Exploding Blood. After she becomes human, his remaining concern is whether her retained ice ability means she might turn back into a demon; Lin Guang’s explanation reassures him 1 12 31 80 128.
- Lin Guang — Training partner, mentor, and mission companion whom Tanjiro regards as an older-brother figure. Later becomes the siblings’ official supervisor. Tanjiro trusts him with Nezuko and welcomes the possibility of him becoming his brother-in-law. Lin Guang continues teaching him through skill scrolls, training advice, and explanations of his family’s connection to Sun Breathing. Tanjiro and the human Nezuko eventually visit to thank him for his care 3 17 32 44 65 83 92 128.
- Sakonji Urokodaki — Teacher who trains him, equips him for his first mission, and stakes his life on Nezuko’s restraint 2 3 12 42.
- Giyu Tomioka — Sends the siblings to Urokodaki and pledges to commit seppuku if Nezuko attacks a human. Lin Guang later credits Tanjiro with helping Giyu change. They fight together against Akaza in the Infinity Castle 1 42 106 111 113.
- Tamayo — A demon physician pursuing a treatment to restore demons to humanity. Tanjiro trusts her and offers to do anything that might help cure Nezuko. After the Swordsmith Village battle, he writes asking her to investigate Nezuko’s condition 21 104.
- Zenitsu Agatsuma — Fellow Demon Slayer and traveling companion. Tanjiro thanks him for protecting Nezuko despite knowing she is a demon. He later shares his Total Concentration: Constant practice method with him and continues fighting alongside him 25 29 31 52 77.
- Inosuke Hashibira — Fellow Demon Slayer and companion. Their early confrontation ends in a headbutt, but they later cooperate to rescue Corps members and fight the Spider-Faced Demon. Tanjiro encourages his training and joins him in subsequent missions 28 36 52 54 77.
- Muzan Kibutsuji — Identified by Urokodaki as the demon responsible for his family’s death. Tanjiro vows to pursue and kill him after their encounter in Asakusa. Muzan orders subordinates to target the swordsman wearing hanafuda-like earrings. Muzan is ultimately killed by Lin Guang 13 18 19 125.
- Kagaya Ubuyashiki — Corps leader who approves the siblings’ situation and urges Tanjiro to defeat a member of the Twelve Kizuki before attempting to defeat Muzan 42 43.
- Shinobu Kocho — Initially tries to kill Nezuko as a demon; later arranges Tanjiro’s recovery at her estate. Oversees the training environment in which he practices Total Concentration: Constant and recommends him for the Mugen Train mission 38 44 52 54.
- Kyojuro Rengoku — Flame Hashira and Mugen Train companion. Accepts Nezuko on the basis of Kagaya’s approval, offers to take Tanjiro as his successor, and saves him from Akaza’s initial attack. After the mission, they become pen pals, and Rengoku researches Hinokami Kagura for him 54 55 58 116.
- Tengen Uzui — Sound Hashira whose attempt to recruit Aoi brings him into conflict with Tanjiro. Tanjiro volunteers himself and his companions instead, then assists Uzui against Gyutaro in the Entertainment District 67 68 74 75 77.
- Mitsuri Kanroji — Supports Kagaya’s acceptance of the siblings and treats them warmly at the Swordsmith Village. Tanjiro helps her bring food to Genya and responds enthusiastically to her encouragement. He later assists her against Zohakuten 42 92 99.
- Genya Shinazugawa — Initially seems difficult for Tanjiro to approach. Tanjiro nevertheless worries about his absence from meals and brings rice balls to his room with Mitsuri. They later fight Hantengu’s manifestations together 92 98 99.
- Muichiro Tokito — Tanjiro objects to his treatment of Kotetsu and defends the importance of swordsmiths. Both later participate in the fighting during the Swordsmith Village attack 93 95.
- Kotetsu — Swordsmith child whom Tanjiro defends from Muichiro. Supervises Tanjiro’s demanding training with Yoriichi Type Zero and encourages him to strike without fear of damaging the doll 93 94.
- Akaza — Upper Rank Three who attacks Tanjiro at the Mugen Train and again in the Infinity Castle. During their later battle, Akaza acknowledges Tanjiro’s increased strength, and Tanjiro’s Sun Breathing interferes with his regeneration 58 111 113.
