Background / History

Defection and Rule over Humanity

Kaguya was assigned to guard a God Tree as part of the Ōtsutsuki Clan’s practice of harvesting planetary life force for chakra fruit. Guardians worked in pairs, with one member belonging to the clan’s higher ranks. Already wishing to escape the clan, she killed her assigned companion before reaching Earth 494.

After consuming the God Tree Fruit, Kaguya brought humanity under her control and gained authority far beyond what she had possessed within the clan. Her preparations for the Ōtsutsuki Clan’s arrival became increasingly ruthless. Having also experienced humanity’s betrayal during a war, she planned to turn humans into White Zetsu to fight the beings she feared 494 496.

Hagoromo and Hamura opposed her methods and sealed her away. Despite viewing their actions as betrayal, Kaguya retained affection for both sons. Hagoromo foresaw her eventual resurrection and left behind chakra to help Indra and Asura’s reincarnations seal her again 484 493.

Resurrection and Change of Heart

Black Zetsu resurrected Kaguya through Madara during the Fourth Shinobi World War. Recognizing Hagoromo’s chakra in Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha, she immediately attacked them. She then moved the confrontation into her dimensions, intending to protect Earth, which she called her “precious nursery” 491 492.

Lin Guang pursued her between dimensions but interrupted their fighting to ask about her past. Kaguya initially suspected him of working for Momoshiki and Kinshiki, then considered whether he could become an ally against the clan. His observation that her methods resembled those of the Ōtsutsuki higher-ups forced her to reconsider her actions 493 494.

Accepting that she had been wrong, Kaguya returned to the real world to speak with Hagoromo. She explained her history and chose to trust humanity again, citing its development and the actions of Asura’s reincarnations. She released the Infinite Tsukuyomi and separated the nine tailed beasts from herself 495 496.

Survival and Departure

Extracting the God Tree’s husk left Kaguya severely weakened. With chakra supplied by Lin Guang, she transported the berserk Demonic Statue of the Outer Path into her Expansive Truth-Seeking Ball Dimension, where he sealed it with Six Paths: Chibaku Tensei 496 497.

Kaguya survived by retaining enough God Tree power to reshape her body and receiving Lin Guang’s chakra. After automatically becoming his subordinate, she chose to travel with him rather than remain a source of fear in the shinobi world. Lin Guang concealed her in his alternate space and led Hagoromo to believe that she had died 497.

While staying there, she received a warm welcome from Lin Guang’s companions and became particularly close to Tamayo. Lin Guang later gave her the God Tree Heart, restoring her power without its former corrupting influence 498 499 502.

Personality

Kaguya’s distrust grew from betrayal and fear of the Ōtsutsuki Clan. She tried to bear the threat alone, prioritizing greater power over human freedom. She later acknowledged that the original God Tree Fruit had influenced her mind, causing her to lose part of herself and become cruel and violent 494 495 659.

Her attachment to her sons survived their opposition. References to Hagoromo and Hamura saddened her, and Lin Guang’s willingness to understand her motives moved her to tears. Once she recognized her mistakes, she wanted an opportunity to apologize to Hagoromo 493 494 495.

Although described as somewhat lacking in combat talent, Kaguya is intelligent and strategically capable. She reconstructed much of the First Spirit’s story from limited information, partly drawing on television dramas she had recently watched 525.

Traveling with Lin Guang gradually softened her aloof manner. She comforted Mio Takamiya, sympathized with Sabrina’s loss of herself to power, and eventually became comfortable teasing and complaining to Lin Guang. She attributed the change to having fewer burdens and experiencing interesting things across other worlds 665 744.

Byakugan and Chakra Perception

Kaguya can sense powerful chakra without activating her Byakugan; the eye technique provides more detailed observation 492.
