Background / History

Nezuko became a demon after her family’s home was attacked while Tanjiro was away. When he returned, he found the others dead and his younger sister transformed. Despite her condition, she had not eaten anyone. Urokodaki identifies Muzan Kibutsuji as the enemy responsible for the attack and a possible source of information about restoring her humanity 13 40.

Giyu Tomioka sent the siblings to Sakonji Urokodaki. Near the foot of the mountain, Nezuko protected Tanjiro by kicking a demon’s head off; Lin Guang then helped finish the fight. She was settled in Urokodaki’s home, away from sunlight, while Tanjiro underwent his initial test 1 2.

Nezuko subsequently fell into a prolonged sleep and was awake when Tanjiro and Lin Guang returned from Final Selection. Urokodaki proposed that she recovered strength through sleeping rather than consuming human flesh or blood, explicitly presenting this as a guess rather than a Blood Demon Art 9 10.

While she was still asleep on Mount Sagiri, Lin Guang secretly fed her a few drops of his blood to test whether his Devil Fruit–altered body could affect her. He later wondered whether this explained her increasing attachment to him and her ice-controlling Blood Demon Art 31 38.

Tamayo’s subsequent research found repeated changes in Nezuko’s blood composition and an ice-related property resembling the changes in Rose’s blood after absorbing Lin Guang’s blood. Lin Guang admitted that he had secretly fed Nezuko his blood. Tamayo predicted that Nezuko would probably overcome sunlight and might retain ice control even after becoming human 84.

Following the battle at Swordsmith Village, Nezuko survived exposure to sunlight while still retaining demonic eyes and teeth. Her new immunity made her a central target for Muzan, who sought to obtain her to overcome his own weakness to the sun. The Corps concealed her whereabouts while Nakime’s clones searched for her 100 102 106 107.

After Muzan’s defeat, Nezuko is confirmed to have returned to humanity. She and Tanjiro visited Lin Guang to thank him and ask why her ice ability remained. In private, she recalled receiving his blood while asleep, accepted his acknowledgment, and thanked him for giving her a means to protect her family 125 128.

Personality

Nezuko retains human reason through strong will, according to Urokodaki’s letter. She protects humans and fights demons rather than preying on people. Her restraint is demonstrated directly when she turns away from Sanemi Shinazugawa’s bleeding arm despite his repeated attempts to provoke her 41 42 43.

She expresses affection through physical gestures. She places Tanjiro’s hand on her head when he loses confidence, embraces Tamayo, pats Yushiro’s head, and seeks closeness with Lin Guang 22 23 31.

Although given a suggestion to regard humans as family, she also accepts Tamayo and Yushiro, who are demons. Tanjiro interprets this as evidence that she still exercises her own judgment rather than merely following the suggestion 23.

Her kindness eventually changes Shinobu Kocho’s response to her. When Nezuko embraces Shinobu at the Butterfly Mansion, Shinobu returns the embrace and recognizes that she no longer feels her usual hatred of demons toward Nezuko 102.

After becoming human, Nezuko is embarrassed by the memory of crawling under Lin Guang’s covers during her time as a demon. Nevertheless, she speaks to him directly about the origin of her power and expresses gratitude rather than resentment over receiving his blood without permission. She values the retained ability as a way to protect her family should another tragedy occur 128.

Ice-Controlling Blood Demon Art

Her awakened Blood Demon Art is initially described by Tanjiro as a power to control ice 38. Later evidence establishes that her ice ability derives from Lin Guang’s blood and can persist independently of her demonic state 84 128.
