Background / History

Creation and Shinji Takamiya

Isaac Ray Peram Westcott created Mio by gathering natural forces from the earth, sky, and oceans across the planet. The summoning occurred approximately thirty years before Lin Guang’s confrontation with Westcott. Shinji Takamiya found the newly created Spirit and gave her the name Mio Takamiya 609 626.

Mio initially had no name, emotions, or friends. Living with Shinji gave her an identity and emotional life, but Westcott killed him in front of her while attempting to obtain her power. Her extraordinarily durable body subsequently made even death unattainable to her 609 626 627.

Determined to revive Shinji and prevent another loss, Mio sought to make him the strongest human in the world. She used countless girls’ lives to purify Spirit Crystals into forms that others could receive; each resulting Spirit Crystal represented thousands upon thousands of sacrificed lives. Shido Itsuka was Shinji’s reincarnation, and Mio gave him his sealing ability so that he could acquire her power and remain with her forever 623 626 631.

Reine and Phantom

As Reine Murasame, Mio lived among the people whose lives her plan affected. She also operated as Phantom, maneuvering Shido toward encounters with Spirits, including the Yamai sisters. Lin Guang recognized her identities before she openly revealed them, while Reine became increasingly concerned about his interference 532 551 553 574.

Her attachment to Kotori and the other Spirits was genuine, but subordinate to her goal. When confronted, she acknowledged that she would kill even treasured friends and family to bring Shinji back 623.

Appearance

  • General appearance: A young-looking girl approximately 1.6 meters tall, with long hair and finely sculpted features. Her young-girl form strongly resembles Reine Murasame 621 623 635.
  • Astral Dress: A pure-white, goddess-like gown with luminous ribbons winding around her arms 621.
  • Halo: A floating ring behind her back, bearing ten stars representing the Spirits to whom she granted Spirit Crystals 621.
  • Sealed manifestation: When she briefly draws back a portion of her power, only one ribbon remains, her halo shrinks, and her Angel is greatly reduced 627.
  • Personal keepsake: Carries a small, repeatedly mended teddy bear associated with her memories of Shinji 574 632.

Personality

Mio’s defining attachment is her love for Shinji. She remains gentle toward him even when he condemns her actions, and initially prepares to erase Shido’s memories rather than let him bear the knowledge of the sacrifices behind his resurrection. Her affection does not prevent extreme cruelty: she treats mass sacrifice and the murder of loved ones as acceptable costs of recovering him 623 626.

Her composure deteriorates when Lin Guang repeatedly defeats abilities she considers absolute. After being sealed, she becomes openly angry, resentful, and withdrawn. She avoids the other women bound to him and unsuccessfully searches for ways to escape their connection 624 627 631 635.

Pokémon gradually draw her out of this isolation. She begins talking and smiling more, although being reminded of Shinji can abruptly reverse that progress. She initially raises Pokémon primarily as tools for defeating Lin Guang; Sylveon’s apologetic expression after losing to Charizard makes her reconsider that attitude, and she responds by thanking it for its effort 659 660 748.

Following her final break with Shido, Mio becomes more openly affectionate toward Lin Guang and less aloof toward his companions. She also apologizes to Kurumi, despite receiving no immediate forgiveness 757 759 760.

Abilities & Skills

Spirit Constitution

  • Created from natural magical energy accumulated over nearly a century, giving her a life essence closely connected to the world’s fundamental power 635.
  • Retains resistance to water, fire, blades, and bullets even after her Spirit Power is sealed 635.
  • Cannot kill herself even while deprived of usable Spirit Power 631.
  • Can still be seriously injured by sufficiently powerful attacks: Lin Guang’s sword strike destroys her Third Angel and leaves her temporarily unable to move 626.

Spirit Power and Spirit Crystals

  • Divided portions of her own power into the Spirit Crystals held by other Spirits; Kurumi’s time power originated from this division 621 626.
  • Intended to recover purified Spirit Crystals to restore her strength and complete Shinji’s resurrection 622 623.
  • Attempts to sever the Spirit Power Corridors connecting Lin Guang to the Spirits, but discovers that those connections have escaped her control 623.
  • The power Lin Guang absorbs from her is estimated at five or six times the combined amount from Tohka, Kurumi, and four other Spirits 627.
  • Cannot fully reclaim sealed power without Lin Guang’s permission 627.

Spacequakes and Spirit Barriers

  • Blocks more than a dozen of Kurumi’s Spirit Power bullets with a barrier 621.
  • Triggers a powerful Spacequake by releasing Spirit Power; Lin Guang erases it before it can overwhelm the area 621.
  • Shatters Lin Guang’s localized time stop while manifesting Kamui, Zero Form 621.

First Angel — Temple of All Things

  • Manifests a flower-like Angel whose petals contain Spirit Power 622 624.
  • Rai Cannon: Concentrates power in a palm-sized flower sphere and fires a destructive beam, leaving an enormous crater 622.
  • Lin Guang’s sword technique removes almost one-fifth of its petals, which dissolve back into ambient Spirit Power 624.

Second Angel — Paradise of Reincarnation

  • Extends branch-like limbs to establish a Territory, rewriting the surrounding present world into a monochrome Neighboring World isolated from ordinary space 624.
  • Allows Mio to alter the rules within its Boundary, making her nearly omnipotent there 624.
  • Limitation: Beings carrying Mio’s Spirit Power are immune to its absolute rewriting. It consequently fails against Lin Guang and the Spirits 624.
  • Branch Sword: Turns its branches into piercing weapons capable of dismantling the other Spirits’ attacks 624.
  • Serves as the prototype for Wizards’ Territories 624.

Third Angel — Mu / Nothingness

  • Initially described as a nameless, seed-type Angel; later referred to as Mu and Nothingness 625 626 757.
  • Ignores the restrictions of laws and erases the essence of an event at its source 625.
  • Takes the form of an emerald-green seed that releases a jet-black force 625.
  • Mio forms it after dispersing her First and Second Angels into starlight and compressing that light into a seed 624.
  • Its power weakens Lin Guang’s sword strike by ninety-nine percent, but the remaining force destroys the Angel and severely injures her 626.
  • Lin Guang later neutralizes it again during their battle in the Boundary 757.

Alternate Identities

  • Can assume Reine Murasame’s appearance and operate as Phantom 574.
  • Reine and Mio’s young-girl form can appear separately and subsequently merge 621 622.
  • Cannot maintain her Phantom appearance with the limited power she briefly recovers after being sealed 627.

Pokémon Training and Enhancement

  • Learns the available body of Pokémon knowledge in only three days in Viridian City 644.
  • Naturally emits Spirit Power that Pokémon can absorb to purify their life source, improve their constitution, and increase their strength and potential 635 645 707.
  • Releasing more power attracts wild Pokémon from the surrounding forest and river 645.
  • Uses her Astral Dress to locate Moltres beneath Fire Island’s magma and her power to reach the island’s depths 707.
  • Studies opponents’ lineups and preparations, recognizing that Ryo Min has taught Steel-type moves to counter Sylveon 744.
  • Commands unconventional tactics, including having Raichu strike itself with Thunder to break free of ice 745.

Relationships

  • Shinji Takamiya — Her first companion and beloved, who named her and helped her develop emotions. His murder motivates her resurrection plan 609 626 627.

  • Kurumi Tokisaki — Pursues Mio as the First Spirit. Mio opposes Lin Guang sealing Kurumi because she does not want Kurumi’s time power to fall into his hands. Kurumi later accepts Mio’s apology without forgiving her, though her hostility diminishes 621 760.
  • Origami Tobiichi — One of the Spirits harmed by Mio’s actions. Learning Mio’s history does not lead Origami to forgive her 633.
  • Kaguya Ōtsutsuki — A fellow subordinate and traveling companion who recognizes their shared experience of losing their power to Lin Guang. By sharing her own history, Kaguya gradually draws Mio into a friendship 646 659.

  • Isaac Ray Peram Westcott — Her summoner and Shinji’s killer, who sought to steal her power 609 626.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Confrontation with the Spirits

Mio emerges to kill Kurumi and Lin Guang after Kurumi fails to consume her within her shadow. She escalates from barriers and a Spacequake to a battle against the assembled Spirits, while Reine openly reveals their shared identity and merges with her 621 622.

Lin Guang restores Shido’s memories of Shinji through Mukuro’s Michael. Rather than accepting Mio’s plan, Shido confronts her over its victims. Mio continues fighting, but Lin Guang withstands her Angels, isolates their final exchange inside a spatial sphere, and defeats her Third Angel before forcibly sealing her 623 624 625 626 627.

Sealing and Departure

Mio spends ten days trying unsuccessfully to break Lin Guang’s seal. A private reunion with Shido leads her to abandon her immediate plan to resurrect Shinji, although she continues wanting to return to him after leaving her world 631 632 747.

Her subordinate bond prevents an ordinary separation from Lin Guang. The system later confirms that dissolving such a bond would subject the former subordinate to an elimination procedure to protect its secrets 631 756.

Pokémon Journey and Quartz Conference

Summoned into the Pokémon world with Pikachu, Mio receives a new objective: defeat Lin Guang in battle to secure a return home. Traveling with him and Kaguya gives her a more ordinary life built around training, Gym challenges, and companionship 635 636 686.

She reaches the Quartz Conference finals by defeating Ash and Ryo Min. During her final battle with Lin Guang, Sylveon loses to Charizard, and Raichu also collapses against it; Mio then sends Moltres to face Articuno 731 746 748 750.

Final Break with Shido

Lin Guang takes Mio back to her original world despite her failure to defeat him. There, she discovers that Shido has changed during their absence. After an initially happy date, he demands her power and pierces her chest while searching for a Spirit Crystal; Mio escapes in distress 754 756 758.

She vents her anguish through another battle with Lin Guang in the Boundary. His refusal to resent her outburst helps change their relationship, and she initiates a kiss that leads to romantic intimacy 756 757.

When Shido subsequently attacks Lin Guang, Mio rejects the offer to reverse time and chooses never to return. Back in the Origin World, she becomes less distant from the other women and apologizes to Kurumi 759 760.
