Biology and Classification
Types and Matchups
- Dual typing: Pokémon can possess two types. Dialga is Steel/Dragon, Gengar is Ghost/Poison, and Exeggcute is Grass/Psychic 629 674 727.
- Type advantages: Matchups influence damage and tactics. Gengar and Alakazam can exploit one another’s types, while Sylveon’s Fairy typing threatens Dragon-type opponents 727 731.
- Type changes: Mega Evolution can alter typing, as demonstrated by Gyarados changing from Water/Flying to Water/Dark 699.
- Physical variation: Training and outside powers can produce unusually large individuals. Lin Guang’s Charmeleon reaches 1.65 meters, while his Gyarados reaches ten meters in length 679 683.
Shiny Pokémon
- Shiny individuals have distinctive coloration: Lin Guang catches a red Rhyhorn and raises a purple-shelled Shiny Pupitar 675 681 683.
- Lin Guang’s Larvitar becomes Shiny during its evolution rather than being caught in that state. Both Lin Guang and Xiaoxue find the result unexpected 675.
- His Shiny Aerodactyl is a powerful surviving ancient Pokémon carrying a Mega Stone when encountered 687.
Ancient and Artificial Pokémon
- Living Omanyte, Omastar, Kabuto, Kabutops, and Aerodactyl survive in the Underground World beneath the Grand Canyon, despite the area’s reputation for fossils of extinct Pokémon 687.
- Lance distinguishes his Aerodactyl from specimens revived through genetics 703.
- Mewtwo is created through Team Rocket’s experiments involving the Mythical Pokémon Mew 638.
Abilities and Skills
Moves and Innate Abilities
Moves are techniques used in battle; innate abilities provide separate effects 636 664 666.
- Blaze: Strengthens Charmeleon’s Fire-type moves when it is injured 666.
- Solar Power: As described in the novel, increases special-attack power and reduces damage taken in sunny weather 666.
- Intimidate: Gyarados lowers its opponent’s Attack upon entering battle 664.
- Technician: Strengthens Scyther’s low-powered moves, supporting its technique-focused fighting style 700.
- Lightning Rod: Hiroshi’s Pikachu nullifies an incoming Electric-type move and gains increased Special Attack 724.
The novel describes an ordinary individual as having one active ability, with other possibilities remaining hidden. Lin Guang’s Marsh Badge reward allows his current Pokémon to activate hidden abilities and possess two abilities 666.
Communication and Intelligence
- Pokémon can understand commands, express preferences, and choose partners. Mime Jr. approaches Lin Guang and enters his Poké Ball voluntarily 675.
- Telepathic communication permits direct exchanges with certain Pokémon, including Mewtwo, Moltres, and Articuno 638 707 709.
- Meowth speaks human language aloud 641.
- Trust affects cooperation: Primeape begins following Ash’s instructions after Ash protects it during a tournament 683.
Techniques from Other Worlds
- Scyther’s Breathing Style: After observing Lin Guang demonstrate Sun Breathing, Scyther develops a Pokémon-adapted style. Its version works only for itself, not Lin Guang’s other Pokémon 700.
- Sword techniques: Scyther uses First Form: Dual Blade Flash and Second Form: Blade Raging Tide in competitive battles 700 732.
- Raichu’s combat training: Mio’s partner learns Hill Breathing and Ninjutsu, later displaying Lightning Armor and Lightning Blade Slash against Charizard 677 748.
- Psychic Synchronization: Sabrina bolsters Psychic Pokémon with her own power. Lin Guang’s enhanced version also lends strength, enables silent commands, and briefly permits bodily control; among his Pokémon, only Charizard can receive this version 749.
Training and Evolution
Raising Pokémon
The novel treats training quality as decisive: a well-raised first partner can become an Elite Four-level Trainer’s ace, while a poorly raised one has no inherent guarantee of exceptional strength 636.
- Physical conditioning: Lin Guang gradually strengthens Pokémon with the Power Stone. Charmander’s coloring becomes redder, and Magikarp’s jumping ability improves 642.
- Move development: Magikarp doubles its weight from ten to twenty kilograms and learns Bubble under Lin Guang’s guidance 646.
- Individualized exercises: His training ground separates intensive sparring, instructional combat, weighted exercise, and physical conditioning according to each Pokémon’s needs 715.
- Peer instruction: Scyther teaches Riolu and Primeape, Shiny Aerodactyl trains Pidgeotto in high-speed flight, and Lin Guang’s Charizard mentors Ash’s Charizard 716.
- Grooming and massage: Xiaoxue’s care brings out Pokémon’s appearance and helps them relax. Lin Guang learns her techniques before applying an enhanced version to Larvitar 673 674 675.
Evolution Conditions and Choices
- Accumulated strength: Lin Guang delays Charmander’s evolution to develop its existing potential before advancing 646.
- Evolution stones: Thunder, Water, and Fire Stones produce different Eevee evolutions; a Thunder Stone also evolves Pikachu into Raichu 685 686.
- Friendship and time: Some Eevee evolutions depend on its bond with its owner, while Lin Guang’s Umbreon evolves at night 685 728.
- Individual preference: Scyther refuses evolution through a Metal Coat, and Lin Guang respects its decision 689.
- Forced evolution: Ash’s Charizard suffers damaged physical foundations after an anger-driven evolution overdraws its potential. Lin Guang later repairs the damage with the Time Stone 715 716.
- Mega Evolution: Professor Oak considers permanent Mega Evolution a possible explanation for Lin Guang’s unusual Charizard, rather than treating it as an established ordinary condition 705.
System Enhancements
These rewards apply to the specified Trainer’s Pokémon rather than to Pokémon universally.
| Trigger | Recipient | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Boulder Badge | Kaguya and Mio’s Pokémon | Physical constitution increased by 50% 650. |
| Cascade Badge | Lin Guang’s Pokémon | Self-recovery increased by 30% 658. |
| Orange Badge | Mio’s current Pokémon | Speed increased by 10% 662. |
| Marsh Badge | Lin Guang’s current Pokémon | Hidden abilities activated 666. |
| Rainbow Badge | Lin Guang’s Pokémon | Resilience increased by 20%, improving resistance to poison, confusion, and paralysis 673. |
Kaguya’s Grass-type Pokémon also demonstrate an enhancement that removes self-inflicted drawbacks from powerful Grass-type moves: Victreebel repeatedly uses Leaf Storm without losing Special Attack 732.
Capture, Care, and Competition
Trainer Equipment
- Poké Balls: Capture and release Pokémon; willing Pokémon may enter voluntarily, while a powerful target can break free 675 687.
- Pokédex: Identifies species and serves as proof of a Trainer’s identity. Lin Guang copies the devices with Predator and supplies Mio and Kaguya with Orange Islands identities 634 637 672.
- Safari Balls: Used during regulated capture expeditions in the Safari Zone 681.
- Evolution items: Include Evolution Stones and the Metal Coat, although a Pokémon may reject a particular evolutionary path 685 689.
Institutions and Threats
| Institution or Group | Role |
|---|---|
| Pokémon Centers | Provide treatment, including emergency care administered by Nurse Joy with Chansey’s assistance 639. |
| Pokémon Breeders | Specialize in raising and grooming Pokémon; professional recognition includes League certification and Beauty Street competitions 674. |
| Gyms | Conduct regulated challenges for badges, using formats such as one-on-one and three-on-three battles 660 693. |
| Pokémon League | Organizes the Quartz Conference. Professor Oak states that a participant needs at least six Pokémon 668 717. |
| Team Rocket | Steals valuable Pokémon and conducts experiments. Its influence extends into the Viridian Gym and the Kanto League’s Gym structure 638 641 703. |

| Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres | The Legendary Birds sought by Lin Guang’s group in the Orange Islands. All three become partners of the group 705 713. |
| Lugia | Restrains the Legendary Birds, maintains their balance, and calms the weather caused by their battles 706 713. |
| Mew | Mythical Pokémon researched by Team Rocket in its effort to create Mewtwo 638. |
| Arceus | Recognized by Moltres as a creator god associated with fundamental world power 707. |
Story Role
Lin Guang begins his official Trainer journey at Professor Oak’s laboratory in Pallet Town, with Charmander as his first partner. Mio and Kaguya join him, establish local identities, and begin catching and raising their own teams 634 635 637.
Their journey proceeds through Gym challenges, encounters with Team Rocket, the discovery of surviving ancient Pokémon, and the recruitment of the Legendary Birds. Before the Quartz Conference, Lin Guang also helps train Ash’s team 650 687 713 716.
The group’s strongest Pokémon exceed the safety limits of ordinary tournament arrangements. Articuno and Zapdos’s battle prompts the evacuation of Quartz Stadium, and the League later holds Lin Guang and Mio’s final in the mountains. The official results name Lin Guang champion, Mio runner-up, and Kaguya third 738 747 752.
Lin Guang subsequently leaves the Pokémon World with his companions. The system announces that treasure chests will no longer be available there; his Pokémon later receive names and new forms 752 793.
