Background / History
Ophiel was a timid child when Shinsen Saya selected her as the Sixth Divine Attendant. Despite her shyness, she already possessed strong conviction and faith. She was assigned to Jiu for instruction, developing a bond that combined sisterhood, mentorship, and a mother–daughter-like attachment 300 316.
Clockwork City’s land was still wilderness beneath a Spirit Realm Overlay when Ophiel was born. She later led its people in conquering that territory, making the city’s establishment possible. She also spent a hundred years away; her authority over later generations rested partly on having watched their fathers grow up 105.
A Great Demon invasion twenty years before her revival left her burdened by the deaths of many residents. Rather than pursue the future available to her fellow attendants, she remained in the frontier city to protect it. More than twenty years of civic responsibilities subsequently limited the time she could devote to rigorous training 238 300.
Her students included Hua Yin and Yuzhi Liu Si, two young talents who received extensive support from Clockwork City. Liu Si asked her to protect Hua Yin and their unborn child, but a Red Moon Descent struck their castle while Ophiel was away. She arrived to find Hua Yin dying after protecting the child; Liu Si later returned to find his wife dead and the infant alive. Ophiel blamed herself for failing them 240 288.
Appearance
Ophiel is tall, with a classically beautiful face, long black hair, and gilded pupils. Her hair takes on a golden sheen when her powers manifest 71 101 163 232 312.
- Golden heavy armor is her defining combat appearance 70 226.
- Holy Flame wreathes her body and burns within her eyes 71 103.
- A Crown of Laurels, formed through her Origin Substance, accompanies the manifestation of her armor 312.
- Enormous wings of light unfold behind her during aerial combat 218.
Personality
Ophiel’s devotion to the Valkyrie is unwavering. Her reverence for divine authority makes her susceptible to Lin En’s impersonation: his unusually pure Holy Flame and ability to speak Shinsen Saya’s secret true name convince her that he is the Divine Chosen 71. Even Lin En considers her loyalty to the Valkyrie reliable enough to entrust her with Tyrael’s arrest 172.
Her compassion is inseparable from her sense of civic responsibility. She postpones vengeance for her student because dying in the attempt would leave Clockwork City exposed, and she sacrifices opportunities elsewhere to remain its protector 72 300.
She also holds herself responsible for failures beyond her control. Guilt over Hua Yin’s death, the attack on the supposed Divine Chosen, and her own inability to prevent corruption leaves her vulnerable to manipulation. She twice attempts to end her life—first as atonement, later after discovering Lin En’s deception—and he prevents both attempts 163 302.
After learning the truth, her reverence for Lin En becomes hatred. Her subsequent cooperation is a coerced transaction, not restored trust: she continues protecting his cover while pressing him to spare the city’s people. Jiu notices that her former resolve has given way to distraction and emotional exhaustion 303 312 318 337.
Abilities & Skills
Holy Flame
Ophiel wields the Valkyrie’s Holy Flame as both a weapon and a cleansing force 70 312.
- Condenses flame into a golden spear and coats her sword in fire 226 301.
- Releases large-scale burning attacks against powerful opponents 313 320.
- Burns the demonized corpses supplying Liu Si with replacement flesh 320.
- Draws empowerment from the Great Sun; her assassination is deliberately timed at night, when she cannot borrow sunlight 256 314.
Armor Forging
Armor Forging produces the gilded heavy armor responsible for her title 228 312.
- At her peak, its defenses are difficult even for a Great Demon to penetrate 228.
- Can create weapons as well as armor, including burning spears used to strike underground targets 320.
- Requires an opportunity to activate: she cannot forge her armor before Liu Si’s lethal surprise attack 228.
- Is not invulnerable. Liu Si’s Sword God attacks cut her heavy armor, and the Lord of Crimson later shatters it 313 326.
Swordsmanship
Ophiel is an experienced swordswoman capable of confronting Great Demons 227 238.
- Severs an invading Great Demon’s arm with a single strike 227.
- Cuts through a spatial barrier with her golden greatsword 318.
- Throws a sun-empowered blade to sever Liu Si’s sword arm while Lin En briefly slows him 314.
- Her administrative burdens have hindered her improvement. Liu Si eventually surpasses her raw strength, while guilt and shaken conviction further impair her performance against him 238 313.
Flight and Domain
- Hovers above the Spirit Realm battlefield while exerting intimidating pressure 70.
- Possesses a domain, which she withdraws when acknowledging Lin En as the Divine Chosen 71.
- Flies into battle with wings of light, appearing as a streak of golden lightning 218.
Divine Descent
Shinsen Saya can project herself through the beacon placed in Ophiel’s soul 316.
- The first documented descent repels the Lord of Crimson with a sun-bright sword 326.
- Ophiel is not a fully compatible vessel, limiting the power Saya can exert through her 327.
- That manifestation can last at most ten minutes under the approaching sunset; it is forcibly recalled when the Great Sun leaves the Rift’s illumination 327.
- A later descent burns through the Red Moon illusion trapping Ophiel and Jiu 337.
Leadership and Investigation
- Directs senior officers in the Demon Suppression Corps’ Spirit Realm search operations 101.
- Exercises authority over Clockwork City’s clergy and administration 105 302.
- Knows the history of the Crimson Secret Cult’s Eternal Night Returns experiments, which attempted to produce Evil Spirit Vessels from abducted children 109.
- Restores civic order after Red Moon Night 344.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Golden sword / greatsword — Her principal melee weapon, frequently empowered with Holy Flame. Blades she carries are shattered during both Liu Si’s assassination attempt and the Lord of Crimson’s attack 226 318 326.
- Forged heavy armor and Crown of Laurels — Manifestations of her Origin Substance rather than merely conventional equipment 312.
- Seven full-Sequence Origin Substances — The basis of her established power. Their implantation sites become critical vulnerabilities when the attacker precisely targets them 70 228.
- Soul-bearing Origin Substance — Preserves the surviving foundation of her soul and enables Shinsen Saya to repair it 235 236.
- Divine beacon — Shinsen Saya’s mark within her soul, permitting Divine Descent 316.
- Spirit Coffin — Prepared by Jiu after Ophiel’s apparent death; later used for her return to battle 231 232 312.
Relationships
- Shinsen Saya / the Valkyrie — Her goddess and the source of her devotion. Saya chose her as a child, repairs her shattered soul, and comforts her over the burdens she has carried 230 300.
- Jiu — Elder fellow attendant, teacher, and surrogate maternal figure. Jiu rushes to Clockwork City after sensing Ophiel’s fall and embraces her upon her return 226 231 316.
- Lin En — Initially revered as the Divine Chosen, then hated after his deception is exposed. He arranges her treatment but coerces her cooperation through threats involving Saya and Clockwork City; she knowingly maintains his cover afterward 71 235 302 303 316 318.
- Hua Yin — Cherished former student whose death becomes a lasting source of guilt. Ophiel later sees her transformed remains and learns from Lin En that Hua Yin belonged to the Red Moon Family and helped orchestrate the earlier catastrophe 288 321 322.
- Yuzhi Liu Si — Former student and intended successor. He attacks her on the Lord of Crimson’s instructions, nearly destroys her, and later battles her while pursuing Hua Yin’s revival 256 302 313 318.
- Hana Ye — Hua Yin and Liu Si’s surviving child, who addresses her as “Auntie Yan.” Ophiel helps Lin En attempt to return her to Clockwork City before the King of the Red Moon awakens 71 288 326.
- Anthony — A Church official subject to her authority. She intervenes in his interrogation of Lin En and rebukes the officials for mistreating the supposed Divine Chosen 103 104.
