Background / History

Salgon spent centuries around Clockwork City, gathering local knowledge and learning spells. He ruled Get Lost and Die Street, a remote Spirit Realm territory whose apparent size was misleading: discontinuous space made nearby regions look connected, while his actual domain was approximately one street. By the time he returned with Lin En, his underlings had largely deserted it 48 57 74.

He also spent time in the Third Layer before joining the Crimson Secret Cult. According to the Lich’s taunts, he lasted only a few days there before being driven back and subsequently reduced to errands within the cult. Salgon acknowledged this as his past rather than disputing it 57.

His intelligence work included investigating unaffiliated lords such as White Rose Mirror and Thorn Witch Lilith. He originally intended to exchange information about Mirror’s weakness for a promotion, but withheld it after the Crimson Secret Cult dismissed him 77.

Appearance

  • Skeletal body: Stands three meters tall during the Grand Graveyard confrontation and again when blocking Tyrael’s escape 57 207.
  • Green ghostfire: Flames burn throughout his body and within his eye sockets; he can expel fire through his nostrils 57 207.
  • Broad shoulders: Carries the cloaked Lin En on one shoulder 57.
  • Ghostfire form: After his skeletal body is crushed, he appears as a clump of ghostfire clinging to a faint humanoid outline 48.
  • Reading glasses: Wears glasses over his eye sockets while calculating the budget for his fear-production operation 263.

Personality

Salgon’s initial submission is driven by survival. Faced with Lin En’s true form, he exhausts his repertoire of flattery and offers practical services to avoid being killed. Once accepted, that fear develops into gratitude and fanatic loyalty: he considers becoming an Outer God’s first servant the greatest opportunity of his existence and rejects the idea of receiving wages 48 49 50.

He habitually interprets Lin En’s actions as evidence of elaborate, world-conquering schemes. He imagines Hana Ye’s relationship with Lin En as the first step toward corrupting human society, and later mistakes genuine mercy toward Mirror for a calculated technique to secure her allegiance. His admiration is so intense that he records Lin En’s conduct in a notebook for study 49 54 72 85 86.

Toward outsiders and junior recruits, Salgon is threatening and coercive. He regards weaker followers as unworthy, forces loyalty safeguards on the Evil Spirit Wizard and the Lich, and initially exploits the children under Mirror’s protection to pressure her into submission. Lin En explicitly rebukes that approach, explaining that coerced subordinates will retain resentment rather than become wholeheartedly loyal 59 68 79 84.

Beneath his ambition is a fear of becoming useless or being abandoned. He pushes to establish the Divine Cult partly to prove his value before Lin En returns to reality. When Lin En later offers his servants an escape if his vessel fails, Salgon refuses: serving a master who entrusts him with important work has given his otherwise unsuccessful existence meaning 77 284.

Abilities & Skills

Undead Summoning and Green Flames

Salgon channels sickly green fire through his scythe and the surrounding ground 57.

  • Dissolves attacking ghouls into green sludge 57.
  • Summons more than a hundred flaming Skeleton Guards from the earth to fight ghouls and Corpse Fiends 57.
  • Spreads flames across the Grand Graveyard during his assault on the Lich 58.

Scythe Combat

His principal weapon is an enormous black scythe 57.

  • Leaps dozens of meters to deliver a descending blow against the Lich 58.
  • Drives the Lich downward beneath his attack 58.
  • Places himself between Lin En and Mordred, but immediately retreats when ordered to stand down 62.

Bone Locator

The Bone Locator enables Salgon to track targets; he uses it to locate the graveyard where Hana Ye has been taken 57.

  • He claims it almost never fails unless something of a higher order interferes 57.
  • It is one of the spells and tricks accumulated over his centuries of experience 57.

Ghostfire Survival

Salgon survives the destruction of his skeletal body and follows Lin En in ghostfire form 48.

  • His survival surprises Lin En, who believed he had crushed him to pieces 48.
  • This does not make his soul invulnerable: contact with the aura of Lin En’s black pot nearly causes it to collapse 49.

Loyalty Talismans and Deathbone Mark

Salgon uses magical restraints to enforce obedience among the Divine Cult’s first recruits 68.

  • Makes the Evil Spirit Wizard and the Lich swallow pitch-black talismans 68.
  • Requires them to obtain a suppression talisman from him every month 68.
  • Warns that acting against Lin En will cause unbearable agony, compounded by a Deathbone Mark placed in their bones 68.

Intelligence and Spirit Realm Guidance

Salgon’s chief value to Lin En is his knowledge of local factions, ability users, and Spirit Realm conditions 48 77.

  • Identifies Mordred as a Crimson Secret Cult officer and warns about the danger of fighting through Lin En’s frail vessel 61.
  • Recognizes Ophiel as Clockwork City’s archbishop and one of the Valkyrie’s Seven Divine Attendants 70.
  • Explains rifts, the Red Moon’s weakening of reality’s veil, and restrictions on powerful beings entering the human world 69.
  • Finds and personally tests a Lesser Spirit Realm Rift before Lin En crosses it 76.
  • Explains origin-substance implantation, sequence specialization, and assistance from stronger users of the same sequence 50 52.
  • Confirms that origin substances can be implanted into weapons, prompting Lin En to request specialist contacts 161.

His knowledge has limits. He cannot guarantee Lin En’s vessel will survive a crossing, does not know the Crimson Secret Cult headquarters’ location, and fails to recognize the significance of the fortune-telling skeleton living in his own territory 67 69 75.

Emotional Fragment Production

After receiving Lin En’s emotion-harvesting authority, Salgon develops operations centered on Fear and Desire 97 159.

  • Reports collecting approximately 20,000 fragments, chiefly from those two emotions 159.
  • Establishes a production line in a remote human settlement to reduce dependence on Clockwork City 261.
  • Exploits rural fear of nightfall and proposes scenarios involving dead relatives returning, dream whispers, and disturbing nighttime sounds 262.
  • Estimates 100,000–200,000 fragments per scenario run, with potential expansion to multiple locations 263.
  • Avoids large-scale havoc while powerful ability users are stationed nearby, acknowledging that he is not strong enough to risk their attention 263.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Massive black scythe — Used for melee attacks, flame deployment, and undead summoning 57 58.
  • Ring of True Seeing — Reveals the essence of things. Explodes when used to examine Lin En’s true form, leaving Salgon’s skull covered in sorcerous cracks 45.
  • Little notebook and pen — Used to record Lin En’s speech and manipulation techniques 54 72.
  • Reading glasses and calculating tool — Used to prepare the fear-operation budget 263.
  • Drop of Outer God’s Blood — Given by Lin En as insurance before the Red Moon Descent; could facilitate a later descent into another compatible vessel 284.

Relationships

  • Lin En — Master and source of Salgon’s renewed purpose. Salgon progresses from attacking him to becoming his first servant and authorized representative; he vows never to abandon him, even if remaining loyal means dying together 44 48 49 67 284.
  • Hana Ye — Treats her as his master’s wife and addresses her as “Mistress Hana Ye.” Her kidnapping prompts him to track the abductors and lead an undead assault 57 158.
  • Mirror / White Rose — Recruitment target turned colleague. Salgon initially exploits her protective attachment to the children; later, he helps prevent Tyrael’s escape and restrains Lilith while Mirror embraces Lin En 77 79 207 208.
  • Lilith / Thorn Witch — Recruitment target, fellow servant, and rival in fragment production. He accuses her of taking his stockpile, but also works alongside her to defend Mirror against Tyrael 77 159 207.
  • Evil Spirit Wizard and the Lich — Former abductors who become his first subordinates. Salgon imposes loyalty restraints and orders them to earn money for Lin En 57 67 68.
  • Mordred — Crimson Secret Cult officer whom Salgon once saw when joining the organization. His arrival alarms Salgon, who recognizes him as a particularly dangerous Grand Lord 61.
  • Old Bones / Old Fraud — Longtime fortune-telling resident of Salgon’s territory. Salgon dismisses his death predictions as fraud, then regrets overlooking him after discovering his connection to ninth-tier origin substance 74 75.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Defeat and Recruitment

Salgon attacks Lin En with his scythe, initially dismissing him as a minor Abyssal Species. Lin En’s transformation overturns that judgment. Attempting to inspect the resulting monster destroys Salgon’s Ring of True Seeing; after being crushed, he survives as ghostfire and bargains for his life by offering to become a guide and spokesman 44 45 48.

His acceptance into Lin En’s service is followed by escalating reverence. Learning that Lin En has imprisoned Shinsen Saya, the world’s Valkyrie, convinces him that his new master possesses extraordinary power 49 53.

Hana Ye’s Rescue and the Divine Cult

Salgon tracks Hana Ye’s abductors to the Grand Graveyard, overwhelms their lesser undead, and confronts the Lich. He subsequently helps prepare the ambush for the bounty’s issuer and identifies the arriving Mordred 57 58 61.

After the rescue, Salgon proposes an organization devoted exclusively to Lin En. Lin En authorizes him to establish the Divine Cult and serve as his representative, giving him the Evil Spirit Wizard and the Lich as his first subordinates 67 68.

Recruiting Mirror and Lilith

Salgon selects Mirror and Lilith as the cult’s first major recruitment targets, using intelligence gathered during his earlier career. His private criteria also include their attractiveness and potential to continue Lin En’s bloodline—motives he conceals behind claims of efficiency 77.

His coercive plan for Mirror earns Lin En’s criticism. Mirror’s subsequent voluntary pursuit of Lin En nevertheless convinces Salgon that his master has executed a superior manipulation strategy. After both women join, Lin En assigns Salgon responsibility for expanding the organization and developing emotional-fragment production 84 85 86 96 97.

Financing the Fear Operations

Salgon develops a fear-scenario business intended to supply fragments before Lin En’s confrontation with the Lord of Crimson. He initially requests 500,000 Spirit Coins, then reduces the budget to 350,000 under pressure. Major expenses include equipment capable of triggering Spirit Realm Overlays, recruitment, training, and protection against powerful ability users 263.

Lin En decides to sell ownerless origin substance to finance the project. Learning that his master is personally raising funds strengthens Salgon’s resolve to complete the scenario as quickly as possible 263 269.

Red Moon Preparations and Return

Before the Red Moon Descent, Salgon refuses Lin En’s suggestion that the servants divide his money and leave if he fails to return. He nevertheless follows the departure order, describing it as a strategic withdrawal and warning the others against betrayal 284.

He returns to Mesijie Street on the third day, having used the funds to recruit followers and stage terrifying appearances in distant towns and city-states. Only then does Lilith tell him what occurred on Red Moon Night 344.
