Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Expanded stolen-ability repertoire before the Pati operation | 72 76 | Acquires Teleportation specifically for the mission and prepares two other new abilities. One is identified as Membrane and Bubble, providing defensive, infiltration, and parasitic forms. These acquisitions expand his options rather than establish a new ranked level. |
Appearance
Chrollo normally wears his hair slicked back. For the Pati operation, he adopts a less conspicuous appearance that makes him resemble an ordinary university student 59.
- Forehead marking: A black cross, concealed beneath a strip of cloth during his disguise 59.
- Clothing: Replaces his black coat with an ordinary suit, then changes into a dead soldier’s uniform while infiltrating the convoy route 59 72.
- Hair: Wears it loose during the operation rather than slicked back 59 72.
- Left arm: Loses his original arm during the Pati conflict. Machi later attaches an arm taken from a similarly built passerby; its skin tone visibly differs from his own 93 115.
Personality
Chrollo remains analytical even when injured, blinded, or confronted with an ability he cannot explain. He separates immediate survival from understanding an opponent’s technique, retreating when continued combat offers no benefit. He considers himself a thief rather than a martial artist and sees little reason to challenge a powerful enemy without something to gain 76 111.
He also enjoys danger. During the elevator-shaft pursuit, he treats being hunted as an experience that relieves the emptiness of his life, consciously embracing the role of a villain. His desire for unusual abilities persists even under pressure: after Pakunoda is suddenly incapacitated, he immediately covets the unknown technique responsible 76 79.
His attachment to the Troupe contrasts sharply with his treatment of outsiders. He prioritizes rescuing Pakunoda over leaving with the stolen gemstone and holds himself responsible for losses sustained under his command. At the same time, he uses civilians, corpses, and contagious traps without hesitation 93 109 111 115 121.
Abilities & Skills
Skill Hunter
Skill Hunter manifests as a black book containing stolen Nen abilities 72 74.
- Activation requirements: Chrollo must hold the book in his right hand and open it to the relevant ability’s page. Closing, dismissing, or putting away the book ends the active ability 72 74.
- Page control: Its pages turn automatically according to his will, allowing rapid changes between abilities 76.
- Theft condition: He must personally witness an ability’s activation as the first condition for stealing it 76.
- Durability: The book resists physical destruction, but Cheadle’s Scalpel—developed to cut apart Nen abilities—can slice its cover 76 77.
- Practical limitations: Much of his repertoire consists of support abilities or techniques requiring traps. Having many stolen abilities does not guarantee an answer to sudden close-range pressure 78.
- Unfinished evolution: Chrollo hopes to evolve Skill Hunter further. He considers the possibility of post-mortem Nen turning it into an inheritable item, but neither development is shown as completed 72 96.
Membrane and Bubble
An ability stolen from an Enhancement user. After the theft, Feitan tortures its original owner into a vegetative state, and Chrollo places him in hospital care 76.
| Form | Applications | Costs and Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Bubble Man | Absorbs the vast majority of physical attacks. Skill Hunter counts as part of Chrollo’s body while active, preventing an opponent from simply taking the book to cancel the technique 76. | Chrollo cannot move. Absorbed damage produces painful Empty Bubbles circulating in his blood; he cannot activate the form again until his body clears them 76. |
| Membrane Man | Turns him into an extremely thin, paper-like figure capable of slipping through small gaps and infiltrating buildings 76. | Before parasitism is complete, he is extraordinarily fragile; even an ordinary person could tear him apart 79. |
| Painted Skin / Parasitism | Allows him to attach to a host, sustain himself through the host’s body, lend most of his manifested aura, and provide assistance in battle 79 81. | The parasitic transformation is available once per day, and he cannot leave that form until he completes parasitism. Removing the parasitized skin can expose him 79 81. |
- Defensive observation: Bubble Man lets him examine a close-combat opponent’s ability while surviving its attacks, potentially satisfying Skill Hunter’s witnessing requirement 76.
- Host communication: During parasitism, he conveys information directly into Hisoka’s mind 81.
- Demonstrated protection: Bubble Man withstands Dio’s repeated punches during stopped time, protecting both Chrollo and his book 75.
- Personal preference: Chrollo dislikes relying on a technique that requires passively taking a beating 76.
Teleportation
A stolen spatial ability obtained specifically for the Pati mission 72.
- Normal range: Approximately ten meters 81.
- Cooldown: Fifteen seconds when used on himself 77.
- Passenger transport: Can take another person with him, as demonstrated with Hisoka 86 89.
- Random relocation: Also supports a wide-range random teleport, which Chrollo uses to escape the sewer explosion 98.
- Vulnerability: Switching to its page ends his previous ability. Dio wounds him during the transition out of Bubble Man 76.
Transfer Student
An appearance-changing ability limited by Skill Hunter’s right-hand requirement 72.
- Left-hand contact: Allows Chrollo to change his own appearance 72.
- Right-hand contact: Can make another person take on Chrollo’s appearance 72.
- Disguise limitation: Keeping an unusual book visibly open makes the disguise conspicuous to Nen users. Chrollo therefore regards it as useful mainly for minor infiltration tasks 72.
Snowman Syndrome
A fungus-based ability used to obstruct pursuit through infected people and rats 93 96.
- Human transmission: A fungus-covered victim attacks another citizen and spreads the infection through a protest crowd 93.
- Severed-arm trap: Chrollo’s detached left arm is embedded in an infected victim’s abdomen at the center of the outbreak 93.
- Animal carriers: He leaves infected rats throughout the sewer route 96.
- Maintenance requirement: Controlling the rats forces him to keep Skill Hunter open to the Snowman Syndrome page until he switches to Teleportation 98.
Pair of Destructive Ones
An explosive ability used as Chrollo’s backup escape plan in the sewers 96.
- Preparation: Dio recognizes moon-shaped marks on a pipe and identifies the infected rats as the trigger 96.
- Environmental amplification: Chrollo exploits the sewer’s biogas to produce a much larger explosion 96.
- Risk to the user: Despite teleporting, he is caught briefly by the blast wave and left barely able to move 98.
Love Dial 6700
An information-gathering ability that searches according to specified conditions 109 121.
- Target investigation: Helps Chrollo establish that the operation’s target is likely inside the hospital 109.
- Group searches: Detects nearby Phantom Troupe members within a specified three-kilometer area 121.
- Identification limit: Cannot directly establish whether a particular named person is nearby; Chrollo must infer that information from the conditions and results 121.
Martial Arts and Nen Control
Chrollo combines highly practiced hand-to-hand combat, dagger work, and precise aura allocation 72 77.
- Weapon enhancement: Uses Shu to wrap his dagger in aura 72.
- Reactive defense: Reinforces threatened body parts with Nen and redirects a powerful bullet’s force rather than meeting it rigidly 77.
- Evasion: Uses a deliberately unbalanced dodge learned at Heavens Arena 77.
- Close-combat advantage: Dio judges that Chrollo’s superior technique and ruthlessness would eventually overcome Cheadle without intervention 77.
- Planning: His direction keeps the Troupe’s crimes within limits that major powers have historically tolerated 108.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Dagger — Carried inside his clothing and used alongside Nen-enhanced strikes 72 77.
- Potent poison — Incapacitates Sergeant Jiba while leaving him alive for Pakunoda’s disguise requirements 72.
- FH911-Style Bomb — Entrusted to Shizuku and stored inside Blinky. Dio redirects it after she releases it, causing the explosion to fatally burn her 102 111.
- Replacement left arm — Attached by Machi for the East Lake assault. An ordinary person’s arm can withstand Chrollo’s aura in combat for only about half an hour 115.
History
Preparing the Flawless Sage Theft
Chrollo leads an operation to steal Flawless Sage in Pati City. Expecting a dangerous pursuit even if the theft succeeds, he stations Shalnark in a neighboring city as backup and authorizes him to act independently if the group misses its agreed contact time 59.
He predicts the treasure’s underground convoy route from road closures and the risks of alternative transport methods. Alongside Pakunoda, he ambushes its guards, poisons Sergeant Jiba, and takes a soldier’s clothes to continue the infiltration 72.
Corridor Battle and Escape
The infiltration brings Chrollo into a confined confrontation with Dio, Cheadle, Hisoka, and Bonolenov. A sudden sense of danger prompts him to choose Bubble Man instead of Teleportation, saving him from Dio’s otherwise unexplained assault during stopped time 74 75 76.
Wounded while teleporting out of that defense, he attempts to carry the unconscious Pakunoda to the elevator. Cheadle intercepts him and damages Skill Hunter. Dio’s supporting gunfire then prevents Chrollo from exploiting his advantage in close combat 76 77.
Hisoka’s concealed Bungee Gum pulls Chrollo clear of a killing blow. Chrollo escapes into the elevator shaft, transforms into Membrane Man, and parasitizes Hisoka. Their temporary cooperation ends in another teleportation escape after Hisoka deliberately absorbs a near-fatal attack to give Chrollo an opening 78 79 81 86.
Sewer Pursuit
Dio continues pursuing Chrollo through the city. Chrollo leaves a spreading fungal outbreak around his severed arm and deploys infected rats in the sewers, but neither measure ends the chase 93 94 96.
He finally triggers Pair of Destructive Ones amid biogas pipes and uses a wide-range random teleport to escape. The explosion still injures him, leaving him drifting through an underground river while recovering enough strength to move 96 98.
Hospital Infiltration and Rescue Decision
Chrollo regroups with Pakunoda and Kuhua in the hospital morgue. He requests reinforcements, uses corpses and Kuhua’s Gallery Fake in his preparations, and infiltrates the medical ward as Membrane Man while Kuhua holds the real Flawless Sage elsewhere 109 110.
After overhearing plans to publicly execute Pakunoda, he decides that rescuing her matters more than escaping with the gemstone. He also learns of Shizuku’s death and suspects that the bomb he entrusted to her killed her instead of its intended target 111.
East Lake Assault and Withdrawal
Before the assault, Machi attaches a replacement arm, and Chrollo warns his companions to avoid Dio. The plan calls for Uvogin and Nobunaga to draw attention while Chrollo and Machi infiltrate East Lake Prison 115 121.
After the prison collapses, Love Dial 6700 finds only three nearby Troupe targets. Chrollo recognizes that the operation’s losses are his responsibility and that the destruction of the broadcast site has also undermined any opportunity for public retaliation 121.
He ultimately leaves Pati City with surviving members, mourning Shalnark, Kuhua, Shizuku, and Pakunoda. The losses are the worst the Spider has suffered, and the survivors lack a full account of who killed them 130.
Relationships
- Pakunoda — Trusted companion whose rescue takes priority over the gemstone. Her Nen restriction forbids contact with Chrollo, preventing her from tending to him when he returns wounded 55 109 111.
- Shalnark — Intelligence and extraction coordinator entrusted with independent action. He summons reinforcements when Chrollo disappears, using the possibility of the leader’s execution to persuade members to come 59 108 111.
- Machi — Provides emergency treatment by attaching a replacement arm. The possibility of Chrollo’s capture is enough to make her rush toward Pati despite doubting the report 111 115.
- Shizuku Murasaki — Recruited personally by Chrollo because he valued her ability. He remembers her obedience after learning that his bomb likely caused her death 102 111.
- Kuhua / Kortopi — Assists with corpse duplication and the gemstone substitution through Gallery Fake 109 110.
- Hisoka — Rescues Chrollo and serves as his parasitic host, but later cooperates with Dio to isolate and kill him. Chrollo believes Hisoka has died by the time he leaves Pati; Hisoka subsequently appears alive and unable to locate him 78 81 105 106 130 268.
- Dio — A pursuer whose varied abilities repeatedly defeat Chrollo’s deductions. Chrollo considers him exceptionally difficult to read and instructs the Troupe to avoid him 96 115.
- Cheadle — A dangerous opponent whose Scalpel can damage Skill Hunter. Her coordination with Dio prevents Chrollo from capitalizing on his superior close-combat technique 76 77.
