| Name | Mizaistom (米哉斯顿) |
| Gender | Male |
| Affiliation | Hunter Association; Zodiacs 108 |
| Occupation/Role | Crime Hunter with special investigative authority; former Hunter Exam examiner 67 131 |
| Other Position | Candidate for Hunter Association Vice-Chairman 160 |
| First Appearance | Chapter 17, through a telephone conversation with Dio 17 |
Background
Mizaistom is a powerful Crime Hunter known for working independently. Unlike Bounty Hunters primarily pursuing rewards, his profession targets dangerous criminals even when their bounties do not reflect the risks involved. He frequently visits Hunter Association headquarters to submit reports and collect bounties 132 155.
He served as an examiner during the year Yank passed the Hunter Exam. Impressed by the young man's unusual sense of justice, Mizaistom hoped he would become a Crime Hunter. Yank instead followed Pariston into temporary commission work, where he was later ambushed and killed; his ability, Even a Stray Dog Has Three Lives, allowed him to survive as Machi 131.
Appearance
- Clothing: Wears a distinctive black-and-white, cow-patterned outfit 67 116.
- Facial marking: Has a painted black ring around his left eye 231.
- Secret Realm injuries: Suffers a broken arm and severe facial swelling, and gouges out his own left eye during the incident. These injuries are documented during the crisis; their later condition is not established 231.
Personality
Mizaistom is composed, practical, and attentive to inconsistencies. He questions suspicious transport arrangements, recognizes that Jack's willingness to answer questions may be an ability condition, and investigates why an apparently indiscriminate sword attack avoids the prison grounds. He remains capable of deliberate action even under overwhelming hostile Nen pressure 66 87 120.
His commitment to dismantling criminal organizations is uncompromising. Although he understands the political circumstances surrounding the Phantom Troupe, he refuses to bow to them and accepts the personal danger of publicly executing one of their members. His concern for innocent lives is equally explicit: during the Vice-Chairman election, he commits to repeatedly proposing a prohibition against harming civilians 108 164.
He also acknowledges his own mistakes. After his ability catches Dio and Cheadle in its effects, he later declines to use it again when doing so would interrupt Dio's pursuit, choosing to face the enemy's attack himself instead 87 91.
Abilities & Skills
Secret Room Tribunal
Secret Room Tribunal produces three colors of cards that restrict a target's actions through courtroom-themed effects 66 87.
| Card | Effect | Applications and limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow — Restraint | Confines offenders in an invisible Nen prison. | Requires a warning, identification, and a card flip before taking effect. It can catch allies as well as enemies, and Mizaistom cannot cancel it early 86 87. |
| Blue — Summons to Court | Compels truthful answers under threat of immobilization. | Lying, refusing to answer, or remaining silent for more than three seconds triggers Restraint. Truthful but uninformative answers can still frustrate the questioning 87 220. |
| Red — Leave the Seat | Removes a target from their current position to a location some distance away. | Can interrupt an attack or move an ally out of danger. Mizaistom also prepares it as an emergency escape for himself 88 89 121. |
Restraint
- Activation window: Attacks remain possible until he finishes the required declaration and flips the card 86.
- Prohibited conduct: He can announce specific offenses rather than banning violence alone. Against the headless monster, he prohibits environmental destruction, stepping on grass, shouting, and going without clothes 123.
- Sentence strength: Additional offenses thicken the cage, but their seriousness matters. Of those four prohibitions, he considers only environmental destruction to carry substantial sentencing weight 123.
- Duration: Restraint expires on its own. Against the monster, one application is expected to last roughly ten seconds, while a later “no littering” restraint is quickly broken 87 123 124.
- Group-combat drawback: Its indiscriminate effects make the single-target red card preferable when allies are fighting nearby 120.
- Nen suppression: While Wendu Sterling is restrained, her aura remains frozen even after her mouth is freed for questioning 220.
Summons to Court
- Interrogation: Forces Jack to identify himself and Jialuo and admit that they came to steal Flawless Sage 87.
- Truth checking: A truthful answer does not trigger the penalty, allowing Mizaistom to assess its honesty without ordinary lie detection 87 220.
- Information limits: It does not guarantee useful disclosure; Wendu supplies technically truthful but ambiguous answers 220.
- Tactical risk: Questioning can satisfy an opponent's own ability conditions. Mizaistom stops interrogating Jack when he suspects precisely that danger 87.
Leave the Seat
- Attack interruption: Removes Jialuo just before his sword reaches Mizaistom, relocating him to the hall entrance 89.
- Ally protection: Can move companions away from threats they cannot evade normally 88.
- Prepared escape: While confronting the black egg, Mizaistom points a gun at it to fulfill Contempt of Court conditions and prepare to remove himself if necessary 121.
Nen Control and Physical Combat
- Defensive aura: Switches from Ten to Ken before escaping a rocket attack. Gunfire and a subsequent grenade explosion leave him unharmed 66 67.
- Aura redistribution: Uses Ryu to move aura reserved for his ability into his defensive Ken when he decides to withstand an attack directly 91.
- Speed and reactions: Crosses several hundred meters in roughly ten seconds and later dodges a stone thrown almost as fast as a bullet 67 124.
- Striking strength: Delivers a Nen-enhanced punch that sends Pakunoda flying across her cell 115.
- Durability limits: An indirect hit from Jupiter burns his exposed skin and tears his clothing, although he remains able to fight 116.
Investigation and Technical Skills
- Criminal intelligence: Understands the Phantom Troupe's relationship with major powers and identifies clues connecting the Stoneborne Inn to the Fuji Four Thieves 108 202.
- Information network: Has connections within the Ochima Federation that provide access to classified Secret Realm research and specialized equipment 224 231.
- Generator repair: Restores backup power at both the Empire State Building and the Central Broadcasting Tower 86 231.
- Broadcasting: Prepares a livestream for the planned execution and later uses public broadcasting equipment to issue an evacuation warning 114 231.
Equipment & Items
- Handgun: Used while preparing a conditional escape from the black egg 121.
- Special communicators: Borrowed through his connections; these miniature devices function inside a Secret Realm without an ordinary signal. He equips Kanzai and later gives one to Dio 224 232.
- Flawless Sage: Temporarily carries the valuable gemstone during the Pati City assignment 86 88.
Relationships
- Dio — Commissioned operative and trusted ally. Initially accepts Netero's recommendation without an in-person assessment; later recognizes Dio's rapid growth and offers to help secure and notarize the national support needed for his election candidacy 17 114 160.
- Cheadle — Zodiac colleague and frequent collaborator. Her toxin secures Pakunoda's captivity, and her endorsement reinforces his confidence in Dio 108 114.
- Netero — Chairman whose recommendation Mizaistom trusts when recruiting Dio 17.
- Ginta — Reinforcement against the Phantom Troupe. Mizaistom trusts his combat ability and would have preferred him as his election collaborator, but Ginta is occupied with poachers 108 120 189.
- Kanzai — Election collaborator and intended emergency safeguard. Mizaistom chooses him partly because his refusal to fight Cheadle would reduce the conflict's intensity 189 205.
- Pariston Hill — Political opponent. Mizaistom enters the election chiefly to prevent Pariston from becoming Vice-Chairman 160.
- Machi / Yank — Former examinee whom he hoped to recruit into Crime Hunting. When Machi declares that he will pursue that profession under his own name, Mizaistom lets him leave 131.
- Vincent — Pati City ally who captures Pakunoda and later helps fight the headless monster 108 123.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Dio's First Commission
Mizaistom recruits Dio for an assignment beginning on August 27, warning that experienced Nen users may attack. After briefing him, he assigns Dio as deputy captain under Drobada. Their team handles perimeter security for Kakin's Twelfth Prince, while the Royal Guard manages close protection 17 18.
Pati City and Flawless Sage
On November 5, Mizaistom escorts a gemstone convoy toward Pati City. Suspicious of its staffing and schedule, he narrowly escapes a rocket strike against his sedan. He charges the attackers and immobilizes two armed henchmen, but one has already pulled a grenade pin; the resulting explosion kills both men. Mizaistom buries them before continuing after the transport vehicle 66 67.
At the Empire State Building, he restores backup power and enters the lobby during several overlapping battles. His Restraint catches Jialuo, Dio, and Cheadle, temporarily obstructing his allies' pursuit of Chrollo. He questions Jack, recognizes a likely ability trap, and uses Leave the Seat to repel Jialuo's next attack 86 87 89.
Afterward, he reports that Jialuo escaped and identifies the unconscious Jack. He and Vincent then help disperse the disorderly crowd outside 97.
Planned Execution and East Lake Battle
After Vincent captures Pakunoda, Mizaistom keeps her subdued with Cheadle's paralytic toxin. He announces a televised execution intended both to damage the Phantom Troupe's reputation and to lure its members into battle. He summons reinforcements despite knowing that the Troupe may pursue him afterward 108.
Before the confrontation, he sends the prison guards home and prepares the broadcast. Protesters nevertheless gather nearby; Dio drives them away with freezing rain, clearing the battlefield of civilians 114.
When the attack begins, Mizaistom immediately attempts to kill Pakunoda. His punch inadvertently accelerates the activation of her Jupiter attack, but he restrains her before she can direct it at him. She takes the full force of her own attack, while he escapes with burns 115 116.
He subsequently investigates an eruption of hostile Nen and joins Ginta, Dio, and Vincent against the resulting headless monster. His repeated restraints interrupt its assaults and help hold it in place until it dies 120 121 123 125.
Vice-Chairman Election
Mizaistom urgently recalls Dio to the Hunter Association after Pariston proposes bringing the Vice-Chairman election forward. Already a candidate with recognition from the Ochima Federation, Mizaistom offers Dio a route to obtaining the necessary national support 154 155 160.
During rule-making, his proposed ban on candidates using force against one another is rejected. Recognizing that the contest may involve bloodshed, he shifts to a narrower commitment: innocent civilians must not be harmed 163 164.
He selects Kanzai as his collaborator. Beyond Kanzai's strength, the choice limits potential violence against Cheadle and provides an emergency “ballast” if the situation becomes uncontrollable. By the Rusty Lake investigation, Mizaistom has largely abandoned his own ambitions for the office in favor of minimizing casualties 189 205.
Shizai and the Secret Realm
During the Shizai investigation, Mizaistom gathers testimony in Dalatran about the vanished Stoneborne Inn. Its unusual supplies and changing ownership lead him to suspect the Fuji Four Thieves secretly acquired it. He later joins the others at Rusty Lake, where a hotel has appeared 202 204.
Inside the Secret Realm, he restrains and questions Wendu Sterling, an operative of the Ochima Federation's Secret Investigation Division. Her evasive but truthful answers expose the limits of his interrogation ability 220.
By the realm's final crisis, Mizaistom has a broken arm, severe facial injuries, and a missing left eye. After Lu Yan dies and the insect eggs inside his body perish, he contacts Kanzai and makes an exhausting journey to the Central Broadcasting Tower. He repairs its generator and broadcasts a warning that the realm is collapsing, directing survivors to the Hotel as a possible escape route 231.
When Dio leaves to stop the person breaking through the realm's boundary, Mizaistom gives him a communicator. At the Hotel, he also intervenes against Silva's attacks on Pariston while the group confronts the claimed limits of the Divine Artifact's return transport 232 233.
