Arc 5Joey at Heavens Arena

Joey survived attacks tied to the Fourth Prince’s faction, helped Killua reunite with Alluka, and pursued Gerat while training and exploring. At Heavens Arena, Hisoka and Chrollo’s deathmatch gave Joey a chance to reach Gerat, but Atikem trapped him in [Colosseum] before a blood-faced woman intervened.

  • Joey escaped Youpi’s attacks, then witnessed Meruem and Komugi die from the Rose’s effects and left East Gorteau.
  • Joey returned to Rocario, learned that Terpsichora was draining Andrei’s aura, and began working with Sambika while investigating an attack on himself.

  • Joey spied on Gerat and learned that Gerat wanted him brought back dead or alive, then planned to use Hisoka and Chrollo’s fight to get close to him.
  • As Chrollo and Hisoka fought, Joey attacked Gerat’s group, but Atikem trapped Joey with [Colosseum] and forced them both into Zetsu.
  • Killer Queen defeated Atikem and broke [Colosseum], but a woman warned Joey not to touch him as blood-made faces appeared on both of them.
Chapters 102–126 Vol. 2 Read

Ch. 102Youpi's goal and progress

Knov, Morel, Kite, Killua, Joey, and Shoot tried to wear down Youpi, who repeatedly exploded with rage and turned his attacks on Joey after recognizing Killer Queen. Youpi drove Joey back but remained surrounded as Potclean continued collecting interest and the Hunters kept interfering.

  • Knov escaped Youpi's blast through Hide and Seek while Morel's smoke doubles tricked Youpi into dodging their pipes.
  • Kite and Killua arrived with Joey, and Youpi's fury erupted in a massive blast that destroyed Joey's Nen Bullets.
  • Youpi charged toward the Throne Hall, but seeing Killer Queen beside Joey redirected his rage toward Joey instead.
  • Kite shot Youpi while Killer Queen blocked a strike, and Joey used a coin and a large cat to counter Youpi's explosive attacks.
  • Shoot's flying hands rescued Joey from Youpi's blade, and Joey retreated into Morel's Deep Purple soldiers as Youpi's attacks missed.
  • Youpi threw Heartbreaker Attack away before it could explode, while Potclean continued growing beside him.

Ch. 103Could You Let Me Stay?

The Extermination Team fought Youpi while Joey returned to the palace, where the Rose explosion revealed that Meruem had survived but was dying from the Rose’s poison. After Meruem absorbed Youpi’s cells and rushed toward the palace, Komugi asked the team to let her stay.

  • Youpi used En to distinguish the real Extermination Team members from Morel’s smoke doubles while they continued to stall him, and Joey returned to the palace to conserve his Nen.
  • Joey saw Gon hurry through the palace, then witnessed the Rose explosion and learned from Palm that Netero had implanted it in his heart and Meruem had only hours or less to live.
  • Youpi broke through the team’s blockade and flew toward Meruem, who survived the blast and was moving back toward the palace; Komugi had awakened and asked Joey how much time Meruem had left.
  • Youpi found Meruem and gave him his cells, restoring his body and granting him wings, but the transfer caused Potclean to turn into Hakoware and force Youpi into Zetsu.
  • Meruem tried to destroy Hakoware with Youpi’s ability, then carried Youpi toward the palace as Knov recommended withdrawing and Kite worried Meruem might threaten civilians.
  • Komugi asked the gathered Extermination Team to let her stay.

Ch. 104The light that illuminated everything

Netero fought Meruem with the 100-Type Guanyin Bodhisattva, then triggered the Rose bomb when his strongest attack failed to kill the King. Meruem survived and returned to Komugi, where they continued their game as they faced death together.

  • Meruem offered to spare Netero, but Netero refused and attacked him with the 100-Type Guanyin Bodhisattva.
  • Meruem studied Netero’s attacks, wounded him, and endured Zero Hand, which left Netero aged and exhausted.
  • Netero detonated the Rose bomb, and Meruem survived the blast with help from Youpi.
  • Meruem returned to the palace and sat with Komugi to resume their game as Youpi died nearby.
  • Komugi told Meruem she wanted to die with him, and Meruem learned that his name meant “the light that illuminates everything.”

Ch. 105Departure and a new beginning

After the Chimera Ant incident ended, Joey left East Gorteau and returned to Rocario, planning to heal Andrei and eventually obtain a Hunter License. As he departed with Kite and the others, he learned more about Reina’s creation and looked forward to meeting Sambika, the physician whose ability had helped bring her to life.

  • Joey watched Meruem and Komugi die from the Rose’s effects, then used First Bomb to make Komugi’s corpse disappear before leaving East Gorteau.
  • The International Organization took over East Gorteau and NGL, while the Hunter Association assumed responsibility for NGL and recovered five thousand modified humans from the palace.
  • On August 3, Joey returned to Rocario, where Knov had arranged for Andrei to stay at a hospital near Hunter Association Headquarters.
  • Joey considered Killua’s likely concern for Alluka but decided he would not approach the Zoldyck Family himself.
  • Joey declined Kite’s offer to visit Reina, then learned that Sambika, a Virus Hunter and physician, had used an ability that helped Reina be born.
  • Joey boarded an airship with the departing group, hoping to heal Andrei, earn a Hunter License, and learn more about life energy from Sambika.

Ch. 106Joey Joestar

After Netero announced his resignation, Joey reached the Hunter Association headquarters, received his new identity and a large reward, and learned that the Kakin Empire still had a bounty on him. He then visited Andrei at the hospital and found Terpsichora consuming his aura, while Killua’s plan to help remained unclear.

  • Netero announced his resignation and set conditions for an election to choose the next Chairman.
  • Joey met Mizaistom at the Association headquarters, accepted a three-million-Jenny reward for information about Zaiyilo, and learned that Kakin had increased the bounty on him.
  • Joey received his new identity and a reward for the Chimera Ant extermination, raising his funds to nearly one hundred million Jenny.
  • Joey, Kite, and Morel found that Terpsichora was draining Andrei’s aura and that exorcists feared the risks of removing it.
  • Gon said Killua had a way to help Andrei but might need the group’s support, leaving Joey to wonder what Killua intended.
  • Joey returned to the hotel and resumed training.

Ch. 107Nie D-7 Virus: Immortality Disease?

Joey studied how Nie D-7 Virus affected his Gold Experience creation and suspected its apparent immortality might be connected to Zobae Disease. After discovering that someone had poisoned his dinner, he hired Mizaistom to investigate the people targeting him.

  • Kite introduced Joey to Sambika, who infected Joey's Gold Experience kitten with Nie D-7 Virus and left him with the cat and documents about Reina's birth.
  • Joey read that Nie D-7 Virus could make a Gold Experience creation repeatedly switch between life and coin form, and he suspected Zobae Disease explained the phenomenon.
  • Joey noticed Zobae Disease mentioned in the documents and began to suspect Sambika was investigating the Five Great Calamities disease.
  • Joey used mice created from the dinner tableware to test his delivered meal, and two mice collapsed after eating poisoned food.
  • Kite brought the poisoned waiter to Joey's room, and Joey considered that the waiter might already have been dead when he delivered the meal.
  • Joey called Mizaistom and agreed to pay him to investigate the attack and related information.

Ch. 108An assassination attempt at the election

Joey investigated the bounty on him and considered how to help Killua and Alluka, then attended the Hunter Association election with Kite and Gon. As Joey left the headquarters, two cars driven by manipulated corpses attacked him, and their sudden collision brought professional Hunters onto the scene.

  • Joey learned that someone had offered one hundred million Jenny to capture him alive and suspected the Fourth Prince's people were behind it.
  • Joey reasoned that Killua needed to free Alluka from the Zoldyck Family and considered how the Extermination Team could help.
  • Joey went to the Hunter Association headquarters with Kite and Gon, where Mizaistom gave him a file and he saw Hisoka leave with Illumi Zoldyck.
  • Joey dodged gunfire from two cars and used Nen Bullets to damage the moving corpses driving them.
  • The two cars swerved into each other and exploded, and professional Hunters appeared as Joey noticed something was amiss.

Ch. 109Investigation, Analysis, and Plans

Joey and Kite investigated the coordinated attack on Joey at Hunter Association headquarters and suspected that a third party was targeting him. After learning Killua was on his way to headquarters, Joey revealed that he had overheard Hisoka speaking with Illumi Zoldyck, Killua’s eldest brother.

  • Joey surrendered to Ed Amanda and was taken to the Association security department for questioning while Kite waited with Gon.
  • Joey, Kite, and Gon returned to the hotel, where Kite explained that Teradein and his allies had interfered with the Association’s normal response and might have been paid to target Joey.
  • Kite and Joey reviewed intelligence about mercenaries investigating Joey, including a declining Mafia family named Nostrade, while Gon received a call from Morel about Killua.
  • Gon left after learning that Killua was traveling to headquarters with Zoldyck Family butlers, and Knov began preparing a temporary hospital room for him.
  • Kite noticed Joey had been working from a plan, and Joey revealed that a listening device had caught Hisoka talking with Illumi Zoldyck before handing Kite a voice recorder.

Ch. 110A complete plan

Joey used a listening beetle to uncover Illumi and Hisoka’s plan involving Killua, then set out with the Extermination Team to support Killua and draw out the people targeting him. As Joey’s group headed for Palastan, mercenaries pursuing him learned he was bound for Locket City and were ordered to capture him.

  • Joey’s Gold Experience beetle recorded Hisoka telling Illumi that he wanted to eliminate their younger brother, and Illumi warned that Killua and Gon might both die.
  • Joey explained to Kite that he planned to support Killua while using the operation to expose the people plotting against him, though Kite warned that the mercenaries might not know who had paid them.
  • Kite gave Joey contact information for the Hacker Hunter Ikushambe Katocha, and Joey decided to proceed with the plan while leaving Ginger Cat in Kite’s care.
  • On August 8, Joey, Kite, Palm, Gon, Ikalgo, Knuckle, Shoot, and Meleoron left by airship for Palastan, while Knov and Morel remained behind as backup.
  • On another airship, Ed told Sandra that Tserriednich had identified Joey’s destination as Locket City and relayed the order to capture him; Sandra proposed killing an Ai Yi Yi Family wolfman, but Ed refused.

Ch. 111Explosion, Hisoka, Breaking Away

Joey and Kite intercepted the pursuit on Kansi Mountain while Killua escaped, and Hisoka engaged Kite. Joey broke away from the others and headed toward Knuckle’s position to confront the assassins targeting him.

  • Knuckle reported armed Mafia cars and other vehicles climbing the mountain, and Joey’s group split up to carry out their plan.
  • Joey and Kite encountered Killua and his butlers, and Kite explained that Illumi’s recorded threat had revealed their route.
  • Killua used Godspeed to escape as Hisoka appeared, and Kite stayed behind to fight him while Joey blocked Hisoka’s playing card with Killer Queen.
  • Gotoh exchanged attacks with Hisoka, while Joey helped Amane and Canary withdraw before splitting off to pursue his own plan.
  • Joey received Knuckle’s message marking Illumi’s direction and the team’s location, then headed toward the marked spot.

Ch. 112Ed and Sandra

Joey fought Ed and Sandra after their ambush, using his Nen abilities and allies’ support to defeat Sandra and corner Ed. Ed revealed that the Fourth Prince had targeted Joey because he knew about [Ming], leaving Joey with questions about what the prince knew.

  • Joey escaped the attacking vehicles, discovered Ed and Sandra among the attackers, and realized Sandra could control people with sticky notes.
  • Ed and Sandra fought off Joey’s invisible allies and Heartbreaker Attack while Joey prepared a barrage of Nen Bullets.
  • Meleoron’s ability ended, exposing Ed to Potclean’s interest calculation, and Joey’s attacks left Sandra unconscious.
  • Ed snapped Sandra’s neck and faced Joey alone, gambling that Joey wanted information more than revenge.
  • Ed told Joey that the Fourth Prince wanted to meet him and knew about [Ming].

Ch. 113The plan fell through × Illumi

Joey’s team captured Ed and reunited with Killua’s companions, but Illumi and Hisoka arrived too late to intercept them at the airship terminal. Joey’s plan to travel separately fell through, while Illumi prepared to use needle-controlled people to aid his next move.

  • Joey’s team defeated Ed, and Potclean’s interest left him bankrupt and in Zetsu before Knuckle knocked him unconscious.
  • Knuckle and Meleoron brought Ed along, while Shoot reported that he had dealt with the surveillance team and the other two targets had not appeared.
  • Palm told Shoot that Killua had boarded an airship and that Kite had arrived, so Joey and his teammates returned to the terminal.
  • Joey joined the others aboard an airship bound for headquarters, abandoning his plan to part ways with Kite and travel to Kakin alone.
  • Illumi and Hisoka reached the terminal after the airship departed, discussed the information their opponents had obtained, and Illumi revealed his plan to use aura-laden needles to control people.

Ch. 114Arrival, bait, collision

Joey and the others coordinated with Killua and the Hunters to reach the hospital while drawing Illumi away from Killua. After Illumi withdrew, Joey and Gon’s car was struck by a bus as a heavy truck bore down nearby.

  • Joey learned from Morel that Hunters would be hired to intercept Illumi’s Needlemen while Morel and Knov waited nearby to support the teams.
  • Killua joined Kite and the others aboard their airship with Alluka, while Tsubone, Amane, and Canary followed to ensure he obeyed the rules.
  • Knov assigned the group to several cars and arranged for Morel to reach any team that Illumi attacked through Hide and Seek.
  • Knov messaged Gon that Illumi had blocked Killua but withdrew after Killua made his choice and the Hunters provided support.
  • Gon spotted a heavy truck speeding toward Joey’s car, but a bus struck them from another direction and sent their car rolling toward the sidewalk.

Ch. 115Gunfire, hearing deprivation, and humanoids

Joey and Gon were ambushed by Mafia gunmen, and Joey identified a Nen bullet that deprived him of his hearing. After Joey discovered two Nen users were hiding nearby and that Gold Experience’s creations could stop the bullets, a wolf-like humanoid attacked Gon.

  • Killer Queen destroyed the overturned car so Joey and Gon could escape and alert Knov, then Mafia gunmen opened fire on them.
  • Joey and Gon counterattacked, killing the ordinary gunmen, while a conjured bullet struck Joey’s skin and deprived him of his hearing.
  • Joey spotted a Mafia member react to a coin and sent a transformed bird after him, but an unseen enemy blocked it with a Nen-enhanced car door.
  • After the gunmen fell, a wolf-like figure charged Gon while another enemy hurled car doors and fired sensory-deprivation bullets at Joey.
  • Joey used a Gold Experience creation to block a bullet and suspected the enemy could deprive targets of their senses with successive hits.

Ch. 116Close-Quarters Combat: Sight deprivation

Joey defeated a wolf demi-human with Killer Queen’s bomb ability, but the gunman’s Nen ability then deprived him of sight. Joey realized the Stand had lost its vision too and began trying to identify the ability’s weakness while blind.

  • The pudgy gunman and the wolf demi-human planned an ambush, with the gunman firing as the wolfman charged Joey.
  • Joey used Killer Queen and Nen to fight the wolfman at close range, then turned him into a bomb and annihilated him.
  • Joey rushed toward the gunman, but his sight suddenly vanished despite no bullet visibly hitting him.
  • Joey tested Killer Queen with a coin and confirmed that the Stand was blind as well, then began reasoning about the gunman’s ability and its limitations.

Ch. 117Sensitivity to time and handling

Joey calculated the timing of his opponent’s sensory-deprivation ability and used Heartbreaker Attack’s Chariot to dodge a special Nen bullet, regaining his sight. After the enemy youth killed himself, Joey and his allies learned the attackers might have obtained his whereabouts from three missing Amateur Hunters and destroyed the battlefield evidence.

  • Joey tracked the intervals between the bullets and sensory losses, then used the heat of bullets he had caught to draw Heartbreaker Attack’s Chariot toward him.
  • Joey detonated the Chariot beside himself, using the blast to evade the next bullet and regain his sight.
  • Joey confronted the Chubby Youth, who threatened to keep Joey deaf, then shot himself when Gon approached.
  • Joey suspected another watcher, but Kite found no one nearby, and Knov revealed that three Amateur Hunters had been found with their eyeballs missing.
  • Joey realized the enemy might read memories and used his swift and Killer Queen to destroy the corpses; Knov told Gon that Killua had arrived.

Ch. 118Mizaistom's intelligence

Joey received Mizaistom’s intelligence linking Ed’s abduction to the V5 merchant Gerat Mattle and learned that the Kakin princes’ pursuit had eased. He kept Gerat’s location document while weighing his options, and Mizaistom offered to hire him as a Crime Hunter assistant.

  • Joey returned to the hotel with the others and worried about the enemies, political factions, and uncertain path ahead of him.
  • Mizaistom arrived with breakfast and documents, revealing that Ed had once worked for Gerat Mattle and that Light Nostrade had hired him through the mercenary Sandra.
  • Joey recognized Neon Nostrade in the file and realized Chrollo might still possess her fortune-telling ability, but decided not to contact her.
  • Mizaistom warned Joey that Gerat had Nen-using Hunter bodyguards and powerful allies, then gave him a document showing where Gerat spent most of his time.
  • Mizaistom said the Eighth Prince had withdrawn his bounty and the Ai Yi Yi Family was unlikely to send more attackers, while Joey admitted he might consider entering Kakin if the pursuit continued.
  • Joey asked about earning money as Mizaistom’s assistant, and Mizaistom quoted salaries for trainee and Professional Crime Hunters.

Ch. 119Leaving × A fiery declaration

Joey stayed behind after his companions departed, tending to Ginger Cat and preparing for his own journey to the World Tree. As Kakin announced its Dark Continent expedition and introduced Beyond Netero, Joey rejected the idea of joining it.

  • Joey decided to travel with Kite for now and concealed what he knew about Gerat from him.
  • Andrei arrived with Buhara and Menchi, and Joey received Sambika's instructions and equipment for tracking Ginger Cat's data.
  • Gon, Killua, Kite, and their companions made plans to part ways, while Joey stayed at the hotel for a few extra days before leaving alone with Ginger Cat.
  • Kakin's king, Nasubi Hui Guo Rou, announced an expedition to the Dark Continent and introduced Beyond Netero as its leader.
  • Joey judged that Kakin's expedition would face the succession war and other dangers, and decided he would not join it.

Ch. 120The romance of exploring the World Tree

Joey traveled to the World Tree and climbed to its summit, where he watched the sunrise beside a giant bird’s nest and reflected on the appeal of exploration. After photographing the view, he stepped out beyond the nest’s edge.

  • Joey arrived near the World Tree, bought a camera, and watched glowing Light Birds at night, using Gold Experience to create one from a coin.
  • Joey presented his amateur Hunter License and Chimera Ant medal to register for the climb, then leaped onto the tree before the attendant finished advising him.
  • Joey climbed through the wind and cold, overcoming his fear of heights and reaching the treetop in less than twenty minutes.
  • Joey found a giant bird and its five chicks in a nest at the summit, then sat above the clouds and admired the view.
  • Joey photographed the sunrise and played with the Ginger Cat as the giant bird flew away, then packed up and stepped beyond the edge of the nest.

Ch. 121Joey's [Weather Report]

Joey began developing a Nen ability modeled on Weather Report and tested it aboard the airship bound for Oja City. After Ed challenged him to a rigged treadmill race, Joey won and learned that Gerat wanted to tell him about Ming’s origins and the dangers surrounding it.

  • Joey studied weather and animal information, then used En and Manipulation to create a Weather Nen Beast that formed a cloud and produced a weak lightning bolt.
  • Joey continued training his abilities and exercised aboard the airship until Ed appeared and challenged him to a treadmill race, with the stakes being two months without further interference if Ed lost.
  • Ed revealed that Coach and a woman in yoga clothes were assisting him, while Coach’s Fair Competition Nen ability penalized Joey for cheating.
  • Joey used Killer Queen to transform part of Ed’s treadmill and threatened to break it, forcing Ed to concede and promise that Gerat’s people would leave Joey alone for two months.
  • Ed told Joey that Gerat could explain Ming’s true origins and hidden dangers, adding that Joey was not the first person whose soul had been pulled into a human body and survived.

Ch. 122Facing himself, Heavens Arena

Joey left the mining site after deciding he wanted a life of challenges and exploration, then traveled to Heavens Arena to investigate Gerat and pursue answers about [Ming]. After seeing the vast arena and considering its owner’s immense influence, he prepared to begin his investigation.

  • Joey monitored Ed with a coin created by Gold Experience, then watched him leave the airship and continued to wonder who had rescued him.
  • Joey visited Shiping’s wetlands, studied small-billed swans and other unusual animals, and spent several days exploring the mining site.
  • After Gon left, Joey told Kite he was ready to leave too, and Kite reminded him that they would remain companions.
  • Joey reflected on his desire for challenges and exploration, then left the mining site and headed for Heavens Arena.
  • Joey adopted Kite’s prepared identity as Foxwood, entered Heavens Arena as a tourist, and learned about its fighting system and Floor Masters.
  • Joey saw the arena’s crowded lobby and extensive facilities, and realized how much wealth Gerat controlled.

Ch. 123Gerat's assassination date

Joey investigated Gerat and chose the October 1 Floor Master battle as an opportunity to approach him, but he discovered Gerat was already planning to have him killed. After Joey’s attempt to spy on Gerat’s meeting was exposed, he left the arena and began preparing to assassinate Gerat and investigate his guards.

  • Joey used Gon’s Hunter credentials to buy a detailed report on Gerat, his family, and his security team, then identified the October 1 match between Chrollo Lucilfer and Hisoka Morow as his best chance to meet Gerat.
  • Joey sensed Ed at Heavens Arena through his connection to Gold Experience and followed him to the arena’s 100th floor, where he used transformed devices to spy on Gerat’s office.
  • Joey overheard Gerat discuss bringing him back dead or alive and ordering Atikem to help, then his gecko and listening device were discovered.
  • Joey used a phone transformed by Gold Experience to try to activate First Bomb, but he did not kill Gerat and left the arena as Gerat’s security tightened.
  • Joey concluded that he had likely killed one of Gerat’s bodyguards and shifted his plans from investigating Gerat to studying his guards before an assassination.

Ch. 124Joey's brief life of battle

Joey prepared to assassinate Gerat during the chaos expected from Hisoka and Chrollo’s fight, choosing a simple plan and studying Gerat’s security at the arena. As the match was about to begin, Joey took his position and identified several guards and potential threats among the spectators.

  • Joey decided to avoid Hisoka and the Phantom Troupe and planned to strike Gerat amid the fight’s chaos.
  • Joey learned that an attack on an arena executive had been a trap, then watched the arena and bought Hisoka and Chrollo pins.
  • On October 1, Joey entered the arena and took a seat near Gerat, while a paid stand-in occupied his other ticketed seat.
  • Joey observed Gerat, his bodyguards, and a red-haired woman whose En covered a five-meter radius, and resolved to avoid its range.
  • Joey spotted Ed, hidden bodyguards, cameras, and a Professional Hunter protecting another spectator as three people appeared in the stands.

Ch. 125Hisoka vs. Chrollo

Joey watched Hisoka and Chrollo’s deadly Floor Master match while covertly tracking suspicious spectators and studying Chrollo’s Nen abilities. When Chrollo leapt toward a nearby section of the stands, Joey saw that the fight might soon reach him.

  • Hisoka accepted Chrollo’s Deathmatch challenge, and the two began fighting to the death in Heavens Arena.
  • Joey sent out ladybugs to monitor people he suspected while an unseen man in the stands vanished without drawing the crowd’s attention.
  • A security guard demanded Joey’s identification and asked him to remove his disguise; Joey complied irritably and returned his attention to the match.
  • Chrollo used borrowed abilities to control the referee and attack Hisoka, then copied the dead referee and stamped the copy to control it.
  • Joey studied Chrollo’s use of multiple abilities with Gyo, knowing it could expose him, as Chrollo leapt toward a nearby section of the stands.

Ch. 126Two battlefields: Atikem

Joey fought off attackers in the arena while Hisoka and Chrollo’s battle spilled into the stands, then was trapped in Atikem’s Nen ability, [Colosseum]. Joey’s Stand defeated Atikem, but a woman warned him not to touch the unconscious fighter as blood-made faces appeared on them both.

  • Chrollo disguised himself among the spectators and sent controlled people after Hisoka, while Joey’s fog and Misora’s blood-colored En turned the stands into chaos.
  • Joey used Killer Queen and Emperor Killer to eliminate an attacker, then sent Heartbreaker Attack toward Gerat’s group as his bodyguards tried to stop it.
  • Atikem intercepted Joey, struck him, and invoked [Colosseum], forcing them into a ring where both were placed in Zetsu and barred from using weapons.
  • Killer Queen ignored the Nen restriction and beat Atikem unconscious, breaking [Colosseum] before Joey could use the First Bomb Ability on him.
  • A woman warned Joey not to touch Atikem as ugly faces made of blood appeared on both of them.
