Background / History
Steenee first appears as a Bounsweet at Sunshine Ranch. Grandpa Yang introduces Tong Hua to her nutritious, intensely sweet secretions, while her round body, goofy smile, and fruity fragrance immediately win him over 5.
At Fairy Tale Ranch, her harmless-looking behavior conceals considerable agility. When left at home with the Celebi, she deliberately enjoys the attention attracted by her fragrance. A Starly that attacks her misses after she nimbly evades it, crashes into the ground, and frightens off the remaining birds 45.
She evolves into Steenee during the Gale Hill battle and affectionately returns to Tong Hua afterward. Although he warns her against charging ahead recklessly, she plays innocent rather than taking the warning seriously 68.
Her evolution also changes her sleeping arrangements: she outgrows her flowerpot, which passes to Smoliv, and Tong Hua builds her a small wooden bed beneath the desk by the window. After the household moves into its new home, she shares the first-floor greenhouse garden with Dolliv and Grotle 76 203.
Appearance
- As Bounsweet: Round and mangosteen-like, with three sepals on her head, a white lower section resembling exposed fruit flesh, and two small feet 5.
- As Steenee: A slender, girl-like body with arms, long slim legs, and two large head leaves resembling twin ponytails. The leaves sway when she spins 68 73.
- Hard calyx: Tough enough that attacking Starly and Staravia hurt themselves when pecking it 73.
- As Tsareena: A more magnificent crown, long green leaf-hair, slender legs, and an elegant, queenly bearing 261.
- Fragrance: Gives off a sweet scent that repeatedly attracts wild Pokémon, including after her final evolution 45 99 266.
Personality
Steenee is lively, cheerful, adventurous, and fond of being the center of attention. Evolution makes her even more eager to explore, and she readily turns encounters with wild Pokémon into opportunities to perform. When Buneary and Lopunny gather around her fragrance, she starts an impromptu woodland dance party 73 85 99.
Her confidence initially makes her reckless and somewhat self-centered: she assumes her strength will protect her and rushes toward anything interesting. Watching Looker and Emma handle the rampaging Blastoise forces her to recognize her limits. She resolves to learn more moves, protect her teammates, and eventually explore every part of Almia 100 104.
She is deeply affectionate toward Tong Hua but can be possessive of his attention. Her disputes with Hattrem include warning her away from him and physically removing her from his arms. With Purrloin, she argues over leadership, destinations, and even an ordinary bouquet 126 129 216 224.
Despite these quarrels, Steenee is caring and dependable when others need her. She feeds Smoliv, sustains the ranch’s cream-producing Pokémon, and takes charge when the kitchen team struggles to bake a cake. As Tsareena, she becomes more outwardly composed, but her delight in Tong Hua’s praise and intolerance of troublesome wild Pokémon remain unchanged 132 178 225 266.
Abilities & Skills
Sweet Scent
- Attraction: Draws wild Pokémon and human attention; she uses it to gather Buneary and Lopunny and attract children during a village event 85 99.
- Relaxation and refreshment: Refreshes tired construction workers and soothes companions as they sleep 76 114.
- Feeding: Restores the vitality of the three Milcery. They continue needing her fragrance after evolving into Alcremie 171 178.
- Distraction: Works with Smoliv and the Celebi to hold the rampaging Gastrodon’s attention during the beach rescue 105 106.
- Drawback: Her fragrance also attracts bird Pokémon that try to peck at her 45 73.
Physical Combat
- Agility: Already capable of precise evasive jumps and graceful landings as Bounsweet 45.
- Triple Axel: Known before she learns Zen Headbutt; Tong Hua identifies it as an Ice-type move 89.
- Zen Headbutt: Concentrates power in her forehead for a forceful charge. It can crater the ground and destroy the suspicious device in the waterfall cave 89 104.
- Stomp: Newly mastered during the Battle Royal; its use immediately precedes her evolution into Tsareena 260.
- Trop Kick: Used after evolving, alongside Zen Headbutt, in a sustained assault on Totem Lurantis 261.
- Limits: Her physical attacks struggle against the Gastrodon’s cushioning bodies and slippery coating. The Blue Crystal’s guardian Lucario also repels her Zen Headbutt with an Aura barrier 105 152.
Dance and Magical Leaf
- Confusing dance: Disorients Mareep during Lümei’s practical training, making them easier to capture 221.
- Teeter Dance: Sends confusion-inducing energy across the Battle Royal arena, affecting even some spectators 260.
- Counters: Totem Lurantis avoids its effects through Sunny Day and Leaf Guard, while Totem Araquanid uses Wide Guard 260.
- Magical Leaf: Used with enough precision to cut a small viewing hole in the hot spring’s bamboo partition 117.
Farming and Baking
- Crop nourishment: Applies sweet juice from her fingertips directly to seedlings and later contributes concentrated sweet essence to the soil for a Longevity Berry planting 70 200.
- Kitchen work: Helps make Poffins, strawberry sauce, cheese, and cheesecake 70 173.
- Cake-making: Whips fine, properly stiff meringue, adjusts cream proportions, learns decoration from the Alcremie, and coordinates the other helpers 225.
Exploration and Leadership
- Scent tracking: Locates excellent-quality black truffles by following an unusual smell near a spring 73.
- Local navigation: Leads Ampharos and Riolu through hidden forest trails after they initially head in the wrong direction during the Time Gear search 165.
- Team coordination: Directs the Celebi and Smoliv during the Gastrodon emergency, assigning soothing and distraction roles 105.
- Underwater searching: Helps inspect the seabed for Time Gears, but must periodically surface for air 166.
Relationships
- Tong Hua — Trainer and affectionate caretaker. She frequently throws herself into his arms; he supports her interests while trying to curb her recklessness 68 87 203.
- Smoliv / Dolliv — Close friend and exploration teammate. Steenee carries and feeds Smoliv, then feels disappointed at missing her evolution. Dolliv comforts her with the fragrance of her new olives 73 132 179.
- Grotle — Protective ranch deputy who restricts her early expeditions and recruits Smoliv to help watch her. He also assists her with ranch work 73 182.
- Green Celebi and Pink Celebi — Founding exploration teammates, scouts, and protectors. They stop her from handling dangerous mushrooms and welcome her growing concern for the team’s safety 73 104.
- Purrloin — Companion and recurring rival. Their initial kitchen dispute is formally settled, but they continue fighting over the exploration captaincy and other small matters 121 126 129.
- Minccino / Cinccino — Fellow kitchen helper and occasional partner in mischief. Their attempt to peek through the hot spring partition ends when they unexpectedly find each other looking through the same hole 70 117.
- Milcery / Alcremie trio — Depend on her Sweet Scent for nourishment, even after evolving 171 178.
- Hattrem — Rival for Tong Hua’s attention. Their confrontations include an exchange of attacks at school and Hattrem pelting Steenee with hail after an age-related taunt 216 217 224 240.
- Jessica — Admires her after her first evolution and later becomes her temporary Battle Royal partner, witnessing her evolution into Tsareena 69 260 261.
- Lümei — Temporary practical-training partner. Steenee and Dolliv help her capture Mareep and earn school credits 220 221.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Founding the Fairy Tale Exploration Team
After evolving, Steenee proposes an exploration team named after Fairy Tale Ranch. Grotle initially refuses to let her venture outside, remembering an earlier outing that led to trouble involving Tangrowth. He compromises by permitting exploration within marked ranch boundaries 73.
Steenee becomes captain, accompanied by Smoliv and the two Celebi. Their first expedition to West Hill uncovers a clear spring and valuable black truffles, though the Celebi must first stop her from picking apparently poisonous mushrooms 73.
Coastal Discoveries and the Controlled Pokémon
On a later expedition, Steenee attracts local Buneary and Lopunny, then follows a Lopunny leader to a hidden coastal valley containing rare Dragon Fire Berries and Salac Berries. This discovery eventually supplies those varieties to Fairy Tale Ranch 99 164.
The team witnesses three controlled Blastoise confronting Looker and Emma. Instead of charging in, Steenee hides, accepts their warning, and retreats with her companions and gathered Berries. The encounter becomes a turning point in her understanding of danger 100 104.
Her next outing reveals a narrow cave behind a waterfall. Inside, the team finds strangers installing a red device resembling the one associated with the Blastoise incident. Steenee destroys it with Zen Headbutt, but rising water forces the group through another route to Wind-Famous Beach 104.
There, she helps divert two controlled Gastrodon while the Celebi attempt to soothe them. During the rescue, she takes a half-full syringe from Tong Hua and delivers its remaining contents through precise spinning strikes, putting a Gastrodon to sleep 105 106.
Blue Crystal Trial and Angel Tower
During the search for the Blue Crystal, Riolu introduces Steenee to Aura by transmitting warm energy through her hand. When the crystal’s guardian Lucario challenges the party, Steenee attacks with Zen Headbutt but is thrown back by its barrier; Tong Hua catches her on the ice 152.
At Angel Tower, she carries Rong Yan’s stolen Key Stone while Delibird shields her from pursuit. After passing both Smoliv and the pendant to Delibird, she turns back to help Lucario defeat Infernape 158.
Grovyle and the Time Gear Search
A friendly Buneary leads Steenee, Smoliv, and Green Celebi to a cave containing the badly injured Grovyle. Steenee immediately runs back to the ranch to summon help 164.
She then joins Ampharos, Riolu, and Smoliv in searching for the missing Time Gears. Her knowledge of the forest gets the group to the correct coast, and she continues the search underwater with Ampharos and Riolu toward the Wailord Sea 165 166.
Ranger School and Kitchen Leadership
Steenee organizes a secret trip to follow Tong Hua to the Pokémon Ranger School, bringing Dolliv and Purrloin with Pink Celebi’s help. There, her rivalry with Hattrem develops into a confrontation, while her temporary partnership with Lümei proves highly effective in practical training 214 216 217 220 221.
After reluctantly returning home, she finds the kitchen helpers struggling with repeated cake failures. She joins the effort and takes a leading role in preparing the next cake base 224 225.
Battle Royal and Evolution into Tsareena
At the Royal Dome, Steenee enthusiastically volunteers when Jessica asks for a competition partner. They enter a Battle Royal against Feng’s Glameow, Mallow’s Totem Lurantis, and Lana’s Totem Araquanid 260.
After Araquanid and Glameow are eliminated, the tired and injured Steenee refuses to stop. As Mallow prepares Bloom Doom, Steenee performs Stomp and begins evolving 260.
Emerging as Tsareena, she immediately presses the attack before Lurantis can finish gathering energy. Jessica later explains the unexpected evolution to Tong Hua, who is delighted and thanks her for helping fulfill Steenee’s wish to compete 261.
Trivia
- Tong Hua wonders whether her Ability is Sweet Veil after she remains energetic while the others grow sleepy; the passage does not confirm it 114.
- Her favorite television programs include Extreme Mask, the Lily of the Valley Conference, and Pokémon Contests 259.
- She remembers seeing a gear-like object shown to her by Tangrowth. Green Celebi clarifies that it is an artificial creation used to slow an ancient tree’s aging, not a true Time Gear 169.
- Despite her quarrels with Purrloin, she later sits between Purrloin and Cinccino at the Royal Dome specifically to prevent another fight 259.
