Damaged claw-fragment artifact 222 225 Retains part of her Old God consciousness and supplies shadow power, but her dagger body is badly damaged.
Shadowstone golem integration 226 227 Becomes the power source for a custom Small Arcane Golem, gaining a mobile host with ample energy for sustained operation.
Partial blade restoration 234 Absorbing a Broodmother's life force begins repairing the blade. Further restoration requires draining enemies through melee contact.
Fully restored artifact blade 237 238 Spider Queen Tyranna's death completes the restoration—the first time the artifact has ever been intact. Armor-piercing ability improves considerably.
Scimitar-sized body 259 Life force taken from powerful demons enlarges the dagger into a standard-sized scimitar. Growth remains limited by the incompleteness of the original claw fragment.
Near-demigod shadow output 325 Her shadow energy approaches demigod level and powers both the golem and its ranged energy attacks.
Demigod-level combatant 385 Explicitly described as demigod-level. The purity of her shadow energy lets her counter the Sha despite its greater raw strength.
Void-essence refinement 406 Absorbs the surviving essence of Y'Shaarj's ruined heart, strengthening and darkening her blade and surrounding herself with star-flecked black mist.

Background / History

Xal'atath arrived on Azeroth as one of the Old Gods, but her companions immediately joined forces to dismember and devour her. Y'Shaarj attacked first and consumed the largest portion of her corpse; N'Zoth was later identified as the chief schemer behind the attack. Only a battered claw fragment and part of her consciousness survived 226 429 458.

She remained dormant for countless tens of thousands of years until the troll priest Zandu awakened her. Xal'atath persuaded him to resurrect an Old Gods minion, forcing the Gurubashi Empire to sacrifice enormous numbers of warriors to defeat it. The empire never recovered, and its warriors failed to find and destroy the artifact afterward 222 463.

During the war between the Dark Iron and Wildhammer dwarves, Xal'atath encouraged Modgud to wage war and helped drive the Wildhammers back. She abandoned Modgud during the final battle, leaving her to be killed by the Wildhammer king's Storm Bolt 222 223.

The blade eventually came into Natalie Selin's possession. Natalie's firm convictions resisted its attempts at corruption, while she learned shadow spells for fighting Orcs. When Herad sought the artifact, Nozdormu supplied timeline recordings of its crimes—including a timeline in which Natalie was killed by one of her own companions. That death was a recorded outcome, not Natalie's fate after surrendering the blade to Herad 222 223 242.

Appearance

  • Artifact body: An extremely curved claw-fragment blade, initially a strange-shaped dagger and later a scimitar. Its curvature makes thrusting and backstabbing less practical than slashing 225 239 259.
  • Eye: A hemispherical protrusion between the blade and guard opens into an eye. It remained closed throughout Natalie's ownership until Herad challenged Xal'atath to look at him 225.
  • Original damage: The dagger had several notches, the largest wide enough to fit a finger. These disappeared after its restoration on Mardum 234 237.
  • Golem host: Her custom Small Arcane Golem uses translucent purple Shadowstone, giving her mobile combat form a purple-black appearance 226 324.
  • Void refinement: After absorbing Y'Shaarj's essence, the blade becomes nearly black and is enveloped in black mist flecked with starlight 406.

Personality

Xal'atath is talkative, vain, and prone to exaggerated confidence. She praises her own perception even while complimenting others, dismisses previous wielders as incompetent, and initially claims she is ready to challenge a Faceless Ones General. Her confidence far exceeds her original knowledge of melee combat 227 228 234.

Her bravado gives way when confronted with a credible threat. Elune's divine power immediately silences her, and she prefers assassination and scheming over proving herself in dangerous fights. Nevertheless, Brutag's taunts provoke her into abandoning a sensible retreat 226 239 324.

Revenge becomes her defining motive. Y'Shaarj's remains, the other Old Gods, and their servants dominate her list of targets; eventually, her hatred extends to the entire Void Forces. Her cooperation with Herad and the White Tiger is practical rather than benevolent: she protects useful allies and exchanges services for freedom and opportunities to punish her enemies 386 455 473.

Abilities & Skills

Shadow Energy

Xal'atath supplies shadow power to wielders and constructs, reaching near-demigod output during the Dreadlord hunt 325.

  • Teaches or encourages spellcasters to learn shadow spells, then strengthens those spells with her own energy 229 325.
  • Powers her Small Arcane Golem and feeds its energy-cannon magic circles for rapid-fire or high-intensity attacks 325.
  • Corrodes magical defenses; her shadow-infused blade readily cuts through the Andorhal Dreadlord's spell shields 325.
  • Draws on the same affinity as void energy, allowing her to absorb Y'Shaarj's purified void essence 406.

Shadow Torrent

A concentrated flood of shadow energy used when melee attacks or individual missiles are insufficient 327 447.

  • Catches Tichondrius's dispersed bat forms in an area attack, leaving him severely wounded 327.
  • Burns the fel out of Demons Mechs, disabling them while preserving their external shells 447.
  • Requires substantial expenditure: after overwhelming Tichondrius, Xal'atath pauses to recover energy 327.

Life-Force Absorption

The blade drains vitality after breaching a target's defenses, even through a shallow wound 238.

  • Repairs damage and supports further growth of the artifact body 234 259.
  • Can leave ordinary Mo'arg brutes nearly drained within two or three seconds; exceptionally vital demons such as Pit Lords endure longer 239.
  • Allows her to exploit wounds made by allies, as when she embeds herself in Brutag's injured back 240.
  • Cannot restore her original Old God body; both physical growth and ultimate power have a ceiling 234 259 472.

Golem-Assisted Combat

Herad programs the host's dagger techniques after training with Alleria. Xal'atath initially has no useful melee instruction to offer, but later fights in the efficient, lethal style of High Elf Rangers 227 229 324.

  • Specializes in swift throat cuts, attacks on exposed joints, and repeated strikes against unarmored areas 235 239.
  • Flies at several times the speed of sound when traveling to Andorhal 324.
  • Uses the blade's sharpness to sever Iron Vrykul necks and cripple Obsidian Destroyers by cutting off their wings 348 452.
  • Struggles against armor and hide too thick for the short, deeply curved blade to penetrate effectively 238 239 447.
  • Depends on her host for free movement; leaving it to embed the blade in an enemy sacrifices that mobility 240.

Mental Attacks and Soul Manipulation

Xal'atath combines corrupting speech with shadow magic directed at minds and souls 225 327.

  • Adjusts her voice to suit the listener and offers knowledge or power to tempt prospective wielders 225 226.
  • Pressures Tichondrius through simultaneous mental, magical, and physical attacks 327.
  • Extracts, seals, and interrogates souls, including those of Dreadlords, Sartura, and Mogu 325 327 345 404.
  • Cannot reliably corrupt resolute believers such as Natalie and Faol through her exaggerated promises alone 225.

Stealth and Reconnaissance

Xal'atath combines invisibility, silent anti-gravity flight, and prior investigation to infiltrate defended locations 452.

  • Passes unnoticed through Ulduar and quietly catches the heads and bodies of assassinated guards to avoid raising an alarm 452.
  • Shares battlefield information with Ulthalesh for coordinated interception 326.
  • Moves among Void Forces without arousing suspicion because her shadow power and humanoid form appear unremarkable to them 472.
  • Sends observations from around K'aresh back to Herad while limiting her killings to avoid attracting attention 473.

Countering Sha

Her pure shadow energy is qualitatively superior to the impure negative energy forming the Sha 385 399.

  • Absorbs or resists the Sha of Anger's black energy bolts without suffering their normal effects 384 385.
  • Passes through a Sha's energy body while protected by shadow power 385.
  • Forces the Sha of Hatred to spend more than ten times as much energy to cancel out her attacks, offsetting its larger reserves 399.
  • Does not enjoy the same advantage against another shadow user: the Faceless Ones General in Ulduar turns their magical exchange into a prolonged contest of endurance 453.

Equipment / Items

  • Shadowstone Small Arcane Golem — Custom-built by Herad to house and use Xal'atath as its energy source. Herad's rules initially prevent it from attacking neutral targets 226 229.
  • Demonic horn — Holds captured Dreadlord souls. Tichondrius cannot escape his imprisonment while the horn remains intact 325 327.
  • Positioning Beacon — Provides an escape option during the confrontation beneath Ulduar 454.

Relationships

  • Herad — Controller and mutually useful partner. He suppresses her with Elune's power, provides a mobile host, and offers revenge against Y'Shaarj in exchange for service. She later negotiates a degree of freedom through exchanges of benefits 226 455.
  • Natalie Selin — Former wielder who resisted corruption. Receives a custom Holy Light-enhanced submachine gun as compensation for surrendering the artifact 222 242.
  • Zandu — Troll priest who awakened her and was manipulated into resurrecting an Old Gods minion 222 463.
  • Modgud — Former wielder whom Xal'atath encouraged into war and abandoned during the decisive battle 222 223.
  • Ulthalesh — Fellow artifact and frequent combat partner. Its greater destructive power complements Xal'atath's infiltration, precision attacks, and soul magic 234 327 447.
  • Y'Shaarj — Hated former companion who attacked first and devoured most of her corpse. Destroying his surviving heart becomes an early shared objective with Herad 226.
  • N'Zoth — Chief architect of the attack that destroyed her original body. Xal'atath deliberately prolongs his torture in revenge 458.
  • White Tiger — Temporary ally against the Sha of Anger. Xal'atath shields him so he can continue damaging their common enemy 386.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Recruitment and Silithus Testing

  • Herad chooses Xal'atath as a compact artifact suitable for powering another Small Arcane Golem. Nozdormu approves confinement within a construct but warns him through recordings of her past crimes 222 223.
  • After their agreement over Y'Shaarj's heart, Xal'atath tests the golem against C'Thun's Aqir in Silithus. Her blade easily penetrates their shells, but the hive's larger defenders expose the limitations of her short weapon body 226 228 229.

Mardum and the Legion Campaign

  • Assigned command and assassination duties, Xal'atath infiltrates Spider Queen Tyranna's stronghold while Ulthalesh attacks openly. Draining Tyranna completes her blade's restoration 234 235 237.
  • She helps finish General Voros, survives being hammered into a mountainside, and exploits Brutag's wounds after an ally incapacitates him 238 239 240.
  • Later, she breaches a Legion Warship and opens its compartments to vacuum. A Mo'arg Engineer's electrical arcs interfere with her golem, but she cuts through the welded control-room door and helps capture the ship 259.
  • She and Ulthalesh clear defenders from a Fel Planet's docks before Herad's plant forces establish their infestation 260.

Hunting the Dreadlords

  • Xal'atath kills two Necromancers in Andorhal, pursues the resident Dreadlord, destroys its escaping bat forms, and seals its soul in a horn 324 325.
  • Taking a secret approach into the Underground City, she intercepts Tichondrius. Shadow Torrent defeats his attempted escape, and Ulthalesh restrains him while she imprisons his soul for interrogation 325 327.

War Against the Old Gods' Servants

  • During the Qiraji campaign, she beheads Sartura and interrogates her soul about C'Thun. She also identifies C'Thun's transmutation as the source of Ossirian's obsidian defenses 345 346.
  • When flying Obsidian Destroyers overwhelm allied ground forces, Xal'atath severs their wings, allowing fern treants and Night Elf demolition teams to engage them on the ground 348.

Pandaria and Y'Shaarj's Heart

  • Xal'atath counters the Sha of Anger alongside the White Tiger and Herad, then joins Ulthalesh against the Sha of Hatred 385 386 399.
  • After hunting Mantid at Kor'vess, she is redirected to Mogu'shan Palace to locate Y'Shaarj's heart through soul interrogation 391 404.
  • Herad gives her the heart after Holy Light has ruined its ability to revive. She absorbs its remaining void essence, gaining strength while consuming what remains of her enemy 406.

Argus and Ulduar

  • Inside Argus's shattered World-Soul, Xal'atath uses Shadow Torrent to disable the Legion's heavily armored Demons Mechs 447.
  • Herad sends her into Ulduar to capture Loken without provoking a planetary purification crisis. A Faceless Ones General delays her, prompting Herad's intervention with Ulthalesh 452 453.
  • She forces Loken to evacuate, leaves him with Mimiron, and joins Ulthalesh in tormenting Yogg-Saron. She later oversees prolonged torture of N'Zoth 454 455 458.

Reconnaissance at K'aresh

  • Ulthalesh's upgrades leave Xal'atath with fewer frontline opportunities: she remains formidable against individual enemies but cannot match its ability to destroy starships in a single strike 472.
  • She infiltrates the Void Forces around K'aresh, gathering intelligence while killing isolated targets out of revenge. By this point, she has abandoned the goal of corrupting planets and regards the entire Void Forces as enemies 472 473.

Notable Quotes

“Be brave and make your choice! Embracing the Void is the only way forward for mortals!” 226

“I lost too much back then. I'm no longer who I once was!” 234

“You're finished. There won't be a next time!” — To Tichondrius before sealing his soul 327

Trivia

  • Her immense chronological age exaggerates her practical experience: she spent most of it dormant and later depended on wielders to carry her around. Frequent changes of host left her immobile for long periods 463.
  • Her knowledge of the Void World's extremely high energy density is independently confirmed by Ethereal research 463.
  • High Elf viewers favor her elegant, swift combat style over Ulthalesh's more destructive approach 239.
