Background
Tang San was an assassin in his previous life and spent nearly thirty years studying Tang Sect techniques. He stole the sect’s inner-sect secret arts at the age of nine. His knowledge of Buddhism, Daoist deities, and the underworld also comes from that life, although his familiarity with mythology is limited 5 6 30 72.
His arrival in Douluo is later revealed to be possession rather than ordinary reincarnation. Tang Hao and Ah Yin’s infant died after being caught in the battle between Tang Hao and Qian Xunji; Tang San subsequently occupied the child’s body. Yunxiao exposes these events to Ah Yin and the livestream audience, while Tang San remains unaware of the disclosure 112 113.
At the beginning of the story, he is studying under Yu Xiaogang at Shrek Academy. Their discussion about moving to Heaven Dou Royal Academy is interrupted when the sky splits open and Douluo’s contact with the Primordial World begins 1.
Personality
Tang San places extraordinary trust in the techniques inherited from his previous life. Even after witnessing the Primordial World’s overwhelming strength, he assumes that Tang Sect hidden weapons and Mysterious Heaven Skill will secure his survival. When his cultivation conversion proceeds unusually slowly, he credits the supposed superiority of his Twin Martial Souls rather than questioning his method 3 30 111.
He is intensely possessive of Xiao Wu and repeatedly loses control while watching her suffer. His anger produces threats against her captors, the gods who fail to rescue her, and eventually his own teacher. Nevertheless, he can postpone retaliation when persuaded that survival or greater strength must come first 5 35 69 79.
His pursuit of opportunities is competitive and transactional. He resents others receiving advantages, considers sharing Mysterious Heaven Skill to negotiate access to the Dragon Gate, and plans to break an agreement involving Qian Renxue rather than surrender any benefits. He eventually records enemies in a Grudge Book because he has accumulated too many grievances to remember 2 52 61 98 99.
Tang San also rationalizes wrongdoing as justified retaliation. After reaching the Primordial World, he steals clothing and money, arguing that its inhabitants deserve this because bandits exist there and nobody helped Xiao Wu near Chang’an. The Douluo livestream audience rejects his explanation 111.
Abilities & Skills
Twin Martial Souls
Tang San possesses Blue Silver Grass and the Clear Sky Hammer 15 37.
- His host body carries the Blue Silver Emperor bloodline inherited from Ah Yin 50 52.
- Both Martial Souls develop black, ominous manifestations before his ascension 35 69.
- They begin breaking down when he cultivates Spiritual Qi through Mysterious Heaven Skill 111.
Mysterious Heaven Skill
An internal cultivation method from the Tang Sect’s inheritance, which Tang San describes as having nine levels 13.
- Produces Soul Power when practiced on Douluo and can also absorb the Primordial World’s Spiritual Qi 13 111.
- Tang San considers it superior to the publicly revealed Qi Refining Method and intends to use it as the foundation of a new Tang Sect 48 111.
- Its demonstrated conversion leaves him below Refining Essence into Qi, despite his belief that he has reached that realm 113.
Tang Sect Hidden Weapons
Tang San relies on concealed weapons as his principal contingency against stronger opponents 3 30.
- Carries a Sleeve Arrow and other wrist-mounted hidden weapons 3 30.
- Reproduces several powerful designs from the Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record using materials obtained through Tang Yuehua 34.
- Fills his storage Soul Tool with hidden weapons before ascending 111.
- His confidence in their effectiveness against Primordial World opponents remains unproven in the supplied encounters 30 114.
Three Wu Triple Arts
A self-created Soul Skill developed after Xiao Wu becomes the Scarred Rose King’s concubine. Yu Xiaogang recognizes it as a breakthrough, though its demonstrated use is against the Blue Silver Grass around Tang San 35.
- Missing Wu Fist — “longing gushes like a spring.”
- Remembering Wu Sword — “never forgotten.”
- Three Wu Palm — “lifetime after lifetime.”
All three techniques are announced during the same outburst 35.
Purple Demon Eye
An ocular technique Tang San activates while watching Di Tian leap through the Dragon Gate 48.
Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track
A movement technique retained from his earlier training 114.
- In the Primordial World, Tang San discovers that using it is slower than simply running normally 114.
Demonic Qi
Black vapor first enters Tang San’s Blue Silver Grass without his knowledge. It subsequently appears in his eyes, Martial Souls, and around his body 35 63 69 108.
- His anger repeatedly accompanies stronger manifestations of the black aura 69 98 108.
- During Spiritual Qi cultivation, he absorbs the black smoke from his Martial Souls into himself 111.
- Yunxiao identifies him as a particularly suitable host chosen by a demon; Tang San does not recognize the contamination 111.
- His fury toward Tang Sanzang and Guanyin stirs the Demonic Qi again in Chang’an 113.
Equipment / Items
- Twenty-Four Bridges on a Mingyue Night — Storage Soul Tool used to carry his hidden weapons and Shangqing memorial tablet into the Primordial World. He deliberately leaves out travel money to conserve space 111.
- Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record — Tang Sect inheritance encompassing the techniques and weapon designs he regards as his most valuable assets 30 34 61.
- Shangqing Memorial Tablet — Portable object of worship that he credits with securing divine assistance. He later wraps it in black gauze to conceal the deity’s identity from viewers 57 108 111.
- Nuwa Statue — Kept in his Blue Tyrant Academy dormitory alongside the spirit tablets he makes for the Three Pure Ones 57.
- Three-Trial Gift Package — Supplies Tang Hao gives him as a precaution for the underworld’s trials. Tang San initially considers carrying them inauspicious 57.
- Grudge Book — Notebook listing enemies he intends to punish after becoming stronger; Bibi Dong is one of the names he records 98.
Relationships
- Tang Hao — Father of his host body and his strongest protector on Douluo. Tang Hao supplies materials for his weapons and continues acknowledging him as his son even after the possession is exposed 34 112 113.
- Ah Yin — Mother of his host body and source of its Blue Silver Emperor bloodline. Tang San eagerly anticipates meeting her, but she calls his existence a mistake before Yunxiao reveals that her original son died 52 108 112.
- Xiao Wu — His beloved and the central focus of his rescue plans. Their separation drives his desire to ascend, while witnessing her mistreatment repeatedly triggers his rage 30 35 79.
- Yu Xiaogang — Teacher whom Tang San initially trusts and openly thanks for his support. That loyalty deteriorates after Yu Xiaogang exploits Xiao Wu; Tang San threatens to sever their relationship, then later considers waiting to assess his teacher’s opportunity before deciding 4 69 79 97.
- Qian Renxue — Spirit Hall enemy whose authority as Five Finger Mountain’s Mountain God becomes important to Xiao Wu’s safety. Tang San alternates between expecting her protection and resenting her influence over ascension 34 99 105.
- Bibi Dong — Enemy associated with the destruction of the Clear Sky Sect and the humiliation of Xiao Wu. Tang San records her in his Grudge Book 33 34 98.
- Zhao Wuji — Former Shrek teacher whose public denunciation exposes Tang San’s hiding place and forces him to flee 33.
- Zhu Zhuqing — Shrek companion whom he initially hopes will obtain Ginseng Fruit for the group. Her later transformation into a Primordial World exotic beast provokes his jealousy 32 52.
- Shangqing / Tongtian — Sage Tang San worships in hopes of gaining passage and protection. Tang San interprets the survival of Shangqing’s tablet as personal acceptance, although the narration does not establish him as a disciple 57 111.
- Yunxiao — Secret observer who recognizes his Demonic Qi, conceals him from Guanyin, and incorporates both him and Ah Yin into a larger plan 111 112 113.
- Tang Sanzang — Monk Tang San mistakenly believes is impersonating him and stealing his destined opportunity because of their similar names and shared westward destination 113 114.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Watching the Primordial World
Tang San initially shares Yu Xiaogang’s dismissive attitude toward the Primordial World, even as its inhabitants demonstrate power far beyond Douluo’s understanding. Tai Tan’s immediate rise to godhood makes him furious that he was not chosen to ascend 2 3.
Xiao Wu’s experiences turn the livestream into a source of mounting distress. Tang San threatens the eagle that nearly kills her, the Snake Maiden who makes her submit, and the black bear who mistreats her. Unable to intervene across worlds, he becomes increasingly dependent on future ascension and promised help from his companions 4 5 15 32.
Flight from Shrek and the Clear Sky Sect’s Destruction
Zhao Wuji publicly accuses Tang Hao, Tang San, and Yu Xiaogang of hypocrisy and reveals their location at Shrek Academy. Tang San responds with death threats, but Tang Hao insists that they leave. Liu Erlong’s arrival redirects the group to Heaven Dou City rather than the Clear Sky Sect 33.
After the Clear Sky Sect is destroyed, they hide at Blue Tyrant Academy. Tang San vows revenge despite never having visited the sect, regarding its loss as the destruction of a backing that should have belonged to him. He begins making stronger hidden weapons for his eventual departure 34.
Blackening and the Search for Divine Backing
Xiao Wu’s forced marriage to the Scarred Rose King precipitates Tang San’s most severe breakdown so far. His Blue Silver Grass blackens, an unseen influence enters it, and his recovery produces the Three Wu Triple Arts 35.
Fear of judgment after death gives his pursuit of immortality greater urgency. He secretly makes tablets for the Three Pure Ones, hoping to become their first worshipper on Douluo. Taiqing’s and Yuqing’s tablets reject his worship, while Shangqing’s survives; Tang San interprets this as a special affinity and begins praying for ascension 56 57.
His expectations are frustrated when Yu Xiaogang ascends without him. Later, seeing his teacher enjoy Xiao Wu’s service and exploit her hope of reuniting with him turns his dependence into hostility 63 69 79.
Fourth Ascension
Tang San is finally selected alongside Ah Yin, Snow Empress, and Ice Empress. Before leaving, he asks Shangqing to place him in the Great Tang near Xiao Wu, choosing relative safety over arriving directly beside her while still weak. He promises Tang Hao that he will protect Ah Yin and arrange his father’s later ascension 108.
Near Chang’an, he steals supplies and begins converting his cultivation with Mysterious Heaven Skill. Unknown to him, this also draws Demonic Qi into his body. Meanwhile, Yunxiao reveals his possession of Ah Yin’s dead child to Ah Yin and the Douluo audience 111 112.
Pursuing Tang Sanzang
After completing his cultivation conversion, Tang San enters Chang’an and encounters the departure ceremony for Tang Sanzang. He interprets the monk’s name, Guanyin’s guidance, and the westward journey as proof that Buddhism is stealing his opportunity 113.
His pursuit exposes his weakness: he struggles to escape the crowd, loses his shoes, finds his movement technique ineffective, and becomes injured and exhausted on the road 114.
An unnamed purple-robed female immortal then heals him and tells him to continue west. She states that a destined mount and three disciples await him and that all five must cooperate to complete their Merit. Tang San resumes his journey convinced that he now has divine backing against Guanyin, imagining a True Dragon mount and recruiting his future disciples into the Tang Sect 114.
