Background / History

Warring States Period and Konoha

Tobirama fought the Uchiha during the Warring States Period and developed techniques specifically intended to counter their Sharingan. His Flying Thunder God Slash wounded Izuna, an encounter he later recalls with pride 77 118.

He strongly opposed Hashirama's willingness to sacrifice himself to reconcile with Madara. When Madara demanded either Tobirama's death or Hashirama's suicide as proof of trust, Tobirama withdrew from immediate reach and considered killing or incapacitating Madara if Hashirama followed through. Madara ultimately stopped Hashirama's attempt 117.

After Konoha's establishment, Tobirama organized its departments and devoted time to planning the village's future, sometimes setting aside his ninjutsu research. During this early development period, many missions involved construction and ordinary civilian work rather than warfare 35 150.

Second Hokage and Death

In Tobirama's account, Hashirama never fully recovered from his final battle with Madara and died several years afterward. Tobirama blamed both the physical injuries and Hashirama's emotional attachment to Madara. He buried his brother on Senju grounds, deliberately keeping the resting place away from Uchiha associations 76 360.

Tobirama succeeded Hashirama as Second Hokage, taught several disciples, and developed numerous techniques, many of which were sealed in the Scroll of Seals. Before his own death, he entrusted Konoha to Sarutobi 76.

His research into Impure World Reincarnation had already caused conflict with Hashirama. After Tobirama summoned his deceased brother during an experiment, Hashirama condemned the technique as unethical and forced him to seal it away again 48.

Appearance

Tobirama is a white-haired, red-eyed man. His usual cold expression and folded-arm posture remain recognizable during his posthumous appearances 77 103.

• Right-hand inscription: A seal-like mark on the back of his right hand serves as a key for communication across spaces 76.
• Changes while controlling Itachi: Itachi's hair turns white, and his expression and movements become recognizably Tobirama's 360.

Personality

Tobirama is methodical, skeptical, and intensely curious. On discovering that his restored existence resembles—but differs from—Impure World Reincarnation, his immediate response is to investigate it. The Blue Screen's warning against impractical research does little to discourage him; he insists that anything which exists can be understood through research 76.

His hostility toward the Uchiha is explicit, but his behavior is more selective than his insults suggest. He readily accepts Itachi as a student, becomes deeply invested in his growth, and privately fantasizes about adopting him as “Senju Itachi.” He also helps train Sasuke and recognizes Izuna's genuine concern for younger Uchiha 77 112 155 157.

He is fiercely protective of Hashirama while frequently exasperated by his gambling, evasions, and attachment to Madara. Although he scolds his brother, Tobirama later acknowledges that Hashirama deserves time to relax after an exhausting life and generally chooses not to interfere 103 270 421.

Tobirama favors practical improvements over grand promises of permanent peace. He advises Hashirama to improve living standards rather than expect two idealists to solve a conflict that has persisted for a thousand years. Against the Ōtsutsuki, he remains willing to negotiate, but prepares overwhelming force if diplomacy fails 368 581.

His calm demeanor conceals a mischievous streak. He manipulates Izuna through technical knowledge, uses recordings to catch Hashirama's omissions, and sprays Black Zetsu and Madara with a water gun when their arguments become tiresome 157 421 465 466.

Tobirama developed Flying Thunder God and combines its spatial movement with swordsmanship, marking, and battlefield preparation 77 317.

Awakening and Itachi's Mentorship

Tobirama awakens in a Sealing Space resembling a cozy dango shop. The Blue Screen assigns him the mission of helping Itachi become Root's next leader, offering a connection to Hashirama's area and limited daily communication 76.

Initially hostile toward his Uchiha host, Tobirama changes his approach after hearing Itachi's account of Shisui's death, the Root Coup, and the Uchiha Extermination Plan. He places blame on Danzo and the Uchiha, encourages Itachi to address the conflict through leadership, and accepts him as a student 77.

Reconnecting the Sealing Spaces

After decoding the Blue Screen, Tobirama reconnects with Hashirama and discovers Izuna through another channel. He identifies Sasuke as Izuna's host from the information Izuna inadvertently reveals, then develops cross-space Flying Thunder God to reach them 100 103 112 155.

Inside Sasuke's space, Tobirama claims that a screen malfunction is forcing Izuna's power into Sasuke. He reproduces the surge through his own frequency adjustment, knocks Sasuke unconscious, and uses the supposed repair work to justify remaining there longer 157.

Madara, Obito, and the Reincarnated Kage

Tobirama helps analyze the masked “Madara,” recognizing similarities between his spatial dōjutsu and Kakashi's eye. He contributes sealing countermeasures intended to interrupt Kamui 317 318.

When the real Madara appears, Tobirama takes over Itachi's body and attacks him over his suspected exploitation of Hashirama's remains. His subsequent exchanges with Obito end without a decisive hit: Kamui evades his attacks, while Flying Thunder God prevents Obito from catching him 360 367.

He later enters battle in an artificial body, marks enemy reincarnated Kage while evading them, and works with Karin to seal Gengetsu, Mū, and the Third Raikage. He then sends the sealed Kage to the Land of Wind 450 454 456 457.

Investigating Black Zetsu and Rescuing Kaguya

Tobirama questions Black Zetsu's claim to be Madara's will, challenging both its lack of Madara's memories and its interpretation of the Sage of Six Paths' intentions. After reviewing Madara's recorded conversation with Hashirama, he pursues the question further 400 421.

Concerned about the threat that once drove Kaguya to prepare an army, Tobirama helps organize the lunar operation to reach her. The plan combines the Giant Tenseigan, Obito's Kamui, and reinforced sealing defenses. After her rescue, he brings her to Konoha to question her about the Ōtsutsuki Clan 472 482 485.

Defense Against the Ōtsutsuki

Tobirama coordinates Konoha's response to Isshiki and briefly steals control of a Daikokuten cube to shield himself and Itachi. His deployed body fails, but their delaying action lasts until the barrier is complete and Naruto and Karin return 529 533.

Over the following year, he strengthens the Shinobi World's defenses and builds dōjutsu-support infrastructure. During Momoshiki's attack, he helps Karin prepare hidden barrier layers, then joins the sealing effort inside Sasuke's mindscape to suppress Momoshiki and extract his chakra 547 548 552 555.

When Urashiki arrives, Tobirama prioritizes the exposed Tailed Beasts and proposes using Isobu as bait within a Chains of Heaven trap. Information obtained from Urashiki leads him to consider negotiations with the approaching Kunjiki 573 581.
