Background / History

Sasuke is Fugaku and Mikoto’s second son. Fugaku named him after Hiruzen Sarutobi’s father, presenting the choice as an expression of admiration during an effort to ease tensions between Konoha and the Uchiha 24 27.

He grew up admiring Itachi, who taught him combat skills, accompanied him to school, and made time for his interests despite mounting clan responsibilities. As internal unrest worsened, Sasuke noticed that Itachi was increasingly unavailable and looked exhausted 27 32 39.

Itachi’s expulsion from the clan gave Sasuke a lasting goal: become strong enough to defeat his brother and bring him home. Learning that Itachi remained in Konoha as Root’s leader reassured him, but did not change that ambition 75 80.

After the Mizuki and Danzo incidents exposed the gap between himself, Naruto, and Itachi, Sasuke encountered Izuna in his inner world. Izuna had returned from the Pure Land with a task to train him; surpassing Naruto would secure resurrection for Izuna and Madara. Sasuke accepted his instruction as a means to achieve his own goals 94.

Personality

Sasuke is proud of the Uchiha name and readily turns challenges into matters of clan dignity. As a small child, he even presents defeating a fish as an honorable victory. His desire to look impressive persists as he grows older, although he becomes increasingly embarrassed by stories of his childhood 25 26 63.

His aloof manner conceals affection for his friends. Naruto explicitly describes him as cold outside but caring underneath, and Sasuke remains attentive to Naruto’s painful childhood and emotional state. He often refuses invitations or help initially, then accepts while preserving a show of reluctance 73 136 192.

Competition drives his discipline. He identifies challenging Naruto as a hobby, keeps count of their contests, and maintains a demanding schedule of swordsmanship, physical conditioning, ninjutsu theory, and nighttime Sharingan study 79 101.

His greatest vulnerability is also his central motivation: Itachi. Sasuke worries about his brother’s safety, seeks news of him, and measures his progress against the strength needed to bring him home 94 159 535.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Childhood Friendship and Academy Rivalry

Naruto first notices Sasuke because he does not react with the hostility shown by other children. Their friendship begins in earnest through a dispute over a park swing: Sasuke loses their duel, accepts Naruto as boss “for now,” and goes fishing with him 9 25.

Their rivalry becomes a recurring part of Academy life. After thirty-six unsuccessful challenges, Sasuke wins a shuriken contest and celebrates privately with Naruto. Later, three years of secret training culminate in a fierce school spar displaying his three-tomoe Sharingan and lightning-enhanced swordsmanship 42 101 102.

Clan Troubles and Izuna’s Instruction

Sasuke sees Itachi carrying Shisui’s body, but Fugaku immediately incapacitates him with genjutsu and the family withholds the circumstances. Itachi’s later departure pushes him toward the goal of forcibly restoring his brother to the family 47 80.

After fighting Mizuki and former Root operatives alongside Naruto, Sasuke recognizes his dependence on borrowed chakra and Karin’s sensing. Izuna’s arrival gives him a dedicated teacher. A subsequent kidnapping brings Izuna into contact with Tobirama through the brothers’ bodies, revealing that Itachi also houses a historical mentor 86 87 94 115 117 118.

Team 7 and the Chūnin Exams

Sasuke joins Kakashi’s team with Naruto, Hinata, and Karin. His attack during the bell test forces Kakashi to take him seriously, but Earth Release and underground tactics defeat him 140 145 146.

On missions, he fights Zabuza and Haku, discovers the danger of mist-based misdirection, and learns that an apparent opponent may be a Water Clone. During the exams, he protects Karin from Orochimaru and coordinates with her shared perception 171 176 177 203 204.

His exam match against Karin ends in defeat when her concealed seals and chains dismantle his Lightning Chakra Mode. Her kiss immediately afterward awakens his Mangekyō Sharingan. Tobirama then designs chakra-free chain training to correct his overly direct fighting style 260 274.

Amegakure and the Forest Battles

In Amegakure, Sasuke uses his new time-based ocular power while fighting alongside Konoha against the Akatsuki. He hopes to demonstrate his growth to Itachi, but their personal confrontation is postponed after Konoha wins 280 282.

During the later forest fighting, Sasuke saves Itachi from Dust Release and joins Fugaku’s counterattack. With Izuna’s assistance, he deploys Susanoo and attempts to approach Asura through a giant wooden Buddha. His time manipulation expires short of the target, leaving him exposed to Black Zetsu’s bombardment 453 455 461.

Rinnegan Awakening and Bringing Itachi Home

A spar against Naruto reveals that Sasuke’s externally sustained Mangekyō state still carries significant restrictions. Tobirama postpones Wood Release transplantation and Yin Power use until the risk of abnormal eye evolution can be addressed 520 521 525.

Research Institute support eventually produces a true Eternal Mangekyō and then paired nine-tomoe Rinnegan. Sasuke immediately challenges Naruto again, only to discover that superior abilities do not erase the difference in their reactions and strength 547.

He later confronts Itachi outside Root’s base, using earplugs to block further objections. Their duel escalates from swordsmanship to Susanoo; temporary access to Momoshiki’s Powi Shin finally lets Sasuke overwhelm, bind, and carry his brother home 557 558 559.

Later Ōtsutsuki Conflicts

Sasuke uses Amenotejikara and time manipulation in coordinated attacks against Kinshiki. Momoshiki’s Kāma subsequently manifests on his arm, introducing another source of power 549 550 554.

Against Kunjiki, he freezes the enemy while Naruto and Hinata attack, then escapes his own time-stop domain with Amenotejikara. Their combination damages Kunjiki’s combat suit but leaves him unharmed as his Star-Extinguishing Orb nears completion 585.
