Background / History

Kakashi is the son of Konoha’s White Fang, a former ANBU Captain. Raised during wartime, he spent little time at the Ninja Academy because strong students could graduate early. He became a Jōnin at twelve and trained under Minato Namikaze alongside Obito and Rin 11 137 140 391.

At Kannabi Bridge, Kakashi lost Obito and received his Sharingan. Rin’s subsequent death left him believing that he was the only surviving member of their three-person team. He buried himself in missions, returning to the short-sword techniques inherited from his father and combining them with Lightning Release 137 391. Obito later confronted him over having killed Rin with his own hands; Kakashi attempted to explain, but Obito refused to hear him out 408.

After Minato’s death, Hiruzen appointed Kakashi ANBU Captain in hopes that responsibility for others would help him form new bonds. His friendships with Tenzo, Itachi, and other members gradually drew him out of his isolation, although years of espionage, assassination, and escort work left him exhausted 130 391.

During an undercover assignment, Kakashi assumed a Kumogakure shinobi’s identity and rose to a relatively high position. He befriended Yugito Nii, but their relationship fractured when she tried to stop his escape. Her hesitation helped him leave safely; the incident angered the Raikage and contributed to Kumogakure cutting off contact with Konoha 336.

After returning from Kumogakure, Kakashi retired from ANBU before turning twenty. With Itachi and Tenzo capable of taking on its responsibilities, he preferred a quieter life supported by his accumulated salary and mission bounties 130 144 391.

Kakashi presents himself as lazy, evasive, and chronically late. His apparent indifference conceals considerable guilt. He regrets neglecting Naruto while immersing himself in ANBU work and initially does not know how to face his teacher’s son. Hiruzen encourages him to make amends by teaching Naruto well 137.

As an instructor, Kakashi values teamwork over individual achievement. He approves Team 7 despite none of its members taking his bells because their coordinated fighting exceeds his expectations. His new assignment unexpectedly includes four students: Naruto, Sasuke, Hinata, and Karin. During the bell test, their abilities force him to use his Mangekyō, Eight Gates, and lightning-enhanced swordsmanship. He eventually stops the battle with his chakra nearly exhausted and passes everyone for their teamwork, formally establishing Team 7 140 147 148 149.

Land of Waves

Kakashi leads Team 7 on Tazuna’s escort mission and encounters Zabuza, who recognizes his Blood-Eyed White Blade reputation. Their battles involve sword exchanges, Water Clone feints, and efforts to protect Tazuna through the Hidden Mist 162 169 176 178.

After Zabuza’s defeat, Kakashi hears that the Fourth Mizukage has been controlled by a mysterious man. He agrees to protect Zabuza and Haku while the situation is investigated. Minato’s unexpected appearance supports that promise and gives Kakashi a long-awaited reunion with his teacher 180 181. Back in Konoha, he secures Hiruzen’s permission for the pair to stay 184.

Exams and Village Security

Kakashi serves increasingly as Team 7’s sparring partner and general support because the students already possess specialized teachers or clan traditions. During the exams, he follows a suspicious Baki to the restroom, unaware that the apparent Sunagakure shinobi is Orochimaru in disguise 233 259.

His own combat duties continue: against Kakuzu, he identifies the hearts powering the black-thread creatures and uses Kamui to counter a massive combined elemental attack 279 280.

Five Kage Summit and Reconciliation with Yugito

Kakashi accompanies Tsunade to the Land of Iron because ANBU lacks enough high-level personnel and the summit concerns his former teammate Obito 334.

There, he reconnects with Yugito. Their initially strained exchanges soften into a dinner outing, secretly observed by Naruto and Hinata. Kakashi insists that they are ordinary friends, while his students recognize the emotional tension between them 343 344 347.

During the subsequent stay in Kumogakure, Kakashi returns to his old house and seeks inspiration from Darui for his Lightning Release research. His spar with Yugito escalates into combat against Matatabi, prompting him to unveil Thunder Beast: Stab 378 386 391.

Obito and the Aftermath of War

Kakashi confronts Obito, who invokes Rin’s death to explain his hostility and refuses Kakashi’s attempted explanation 408.

After the war, Kakashi visits Obito in prison and then the Memorial Stone. Obito’s name has been erased while Rin’s remains, leaving Kakashi to reflect on how their lives diverged 426. He later fights alongside Guy against White Zetsu during the attack on the former Root headquarters 454.

Augmentation and Ōtsutsuki Battles

Kakashi undergoes surgery at Root to receive Obito’s other Mangekyō and a body capable of sustaining both eyes. The resulting increase in chakra and access to Wood Release allow him to use a broader range of powerful techniques 506 507 515.

He joins Sasuke in a spar against Naruto, demonstrating intangibility and flight but struggling against Limbo. Their combined spatial attacks ultimately break Naruto’s barrier before they end the match 521 523 525.

Against Isshiki, Kakashi attempts a Kamui ambush during chakra absorption, only for Isshiki to enter the Kamui Dimension and defeat his intangibility 531. He later confronts Urashiki inside Karin’s barrier with Susanoo and lightning-enhanced speed; after being kicked down, he is rescued by chains and joined by his students 576.
