Background / History

Wang Ying was formerly a SWAT officer. After her younger brother was kidnapped, she went directly after the kidnappers’ boss and lost her job. She subsequently worked as a private bodyguard 15.

The Eerie descended while she was protecting an employer at an auction. Everyone else there died; Wang Ying seized a blade being auctioned and fought her way out 15.

She had been strict with her younger brother before the apocalypse, frustrated that he did not live up to her expectations. They failed to escape together when the disaster began, leaving her uncertain whether he was still alive. Finding him remains one of her principal concerns 38 40.

Her brother is later identified as Wang Che. According to his account, the siblings depended on each other from childhood, with Wang Ying raising him single-handedly as both sister and mother. She hoped he would study hard and attend university, unaware that he was secretly associating with street thugs. His kidnapping exposed his double life. Even after rescuing him, she refused to abandon him, confined him at home to cut off his bad influences, and supervised his studies until he gained admission to a prestigious university 113.

During their separation, Wang Che survived by entering symbiosis with an Eerie. When he encounters Yang Yong, he conceals his half-human, half-Eerie condition from the unconscious Wang Ying and asks that she not be told. Her search therefore continues without a conscious reunion at the warehouse 112 113.

By the time she leaves Mechanical City, Wan Qi has located people who fled alongside Wang Che during the apocalypse. Wang Ying follows this lead despite the risks, with Cao Xianming’s divination indicating that her journey will be dangerous but not fatal 657.

Appearance

Wang Ying is a short-haired woman in her twenties, first seen wearing black clothing with a blade at her waist 1.

• Black weapon fittings: Her initial scabbard, handle, and guard are all black 1.
• Soldierly bearing: Yang Yong notices her military air before learning about her SWAT background 15.
• Intimidating presence: Survivors instinctively keep several steps away from her, compared in the narration to sheep avoiding a wolf 1.
• Combat frenzy: Her eyes become bloodshot or scarlet when her violent blade intent surges. During the Human-Faced Owl Bat encounter, this accompanies an explosive increase in her aura 76 165 221.
• Family resemblance: Yang Yong recognizes Wang Che partly because his facial features strongly resemble hers 112.

Personality

Wang Ying generally appears stern, aloof, and impatient with hesitation. Xiao Liao knows her by reputation as an icy, solitary fighter, and her questioning quickly becomes sharp when he struggles to explain his discovery. Nevertheless, she is not humorless: Yang Yong’s repeated insistence that he is “not curious” makes her burst out laughing 15 38.

Her concern for others is expressed more through actions than conversation. She fights to cover survivors’ escape from the supermarket, checks Yang Yong after he collapses from exhaustion, and later guards him through an entire night of cultivation without being asked 4 13 40.

She is particularly attached to her saber. Although its fragility troubles her, she refuses to discard a naturally formed Curio with growth potential. She becomes unusually bashful when requesting Yang Yong’s help and accepts his initial inability to upgrade it without anger 23.

Her younger brother is a deeply painful subject. Xiao Liao’s resemblance to him brings back her uncertainty over his fate. At Mirage Lake, she survives an Eerie’s amplification of her regrets, but emerges pale, hoarse, and visibly tearful 18 38.

That attachment can override her usual discipline. At the warehouse, Eerie meowing associated with Little Tangerine and a voice calling her “Big sis” push her toward losing control. Hearing Wang Che himself, she struggles violently to reach him despite Yang Yong’s warnings. Much later, both Yang Yong and Cao Xianming regard her decision to follow a lead on her brother as something no one could realistically prevent 111 657.

Her reserve also conceals pride, competitiveness, and a mischievous streak. She laughs at Yang Yong’s excuses, takes satisfaction in his admission that her blade surpasses his Heavenly Dragon Slash, and secures Zhang Bihuang’s help by promising Yang Yong’s forging services without consulting him 84 94 98 99.

Wang Ying understands herself primarily as a fighter rather than a strategist or creator. Trapped in an illusion, she reasons that if her blade cannot cut through an obstacle, it is simply not yet strong, sharp, or wild enough. She persistently swings until she begins sensing the domain’s boundary 356.

Her courage is not dependent on believing she can win. When the Man in the Suit effortlessly neutralizes her strongest technique, she still prepares to confront him because an unknown, overwhelmingly powerful being has appeared beside Cao Xianming in the convoy 478.

Wang Ying specializes in offensive blade combat and is explicitly assigned the position of the convoy’s strongest fighter. Her strength earns her thirty percent of the Transcendents’ centrally distributed supplies, equal to Captain Cao Xianming’s share 8.

• During the Human-Faced Owl Bat battle, she grows fiercer as her injuries worsen, and her Sword Intent becomes nearly tangible 221 222.

• Eerie cats exploit her memories of Little Tangerine, and the sound of Wang Che’s voice drives her to struggle against Yang Yong’s restraint 111.
• Yang Yong distracts her by biting her earlobe, then knocks her unconscious with a strike to the neck. Her blade spirit attempts to retaliate before submitting to the furnace’s authority 112.
