Background / History

Makoto’s Shadow Warrior

Ei and her older twin, Raiden Makoto, complemented one another: Makoto excelled at administration and strategy, while Ei supplied overwhelming martial strength. During the Archon War, they defeated the gods within Inazuma. Because each region could have only one victor, Ei relinquished her divine seat so Makoto could become the first Electro Archon, then served as her shadow warrior 32.

Ei’s close companions included the tengu general Sasayuri, Kitsune Saiguu, and the oni maiden Mikoshi Chiyo. Sasayuri died during the War of the Eastern Invasion. Ei also slew the Thunderbird on Seirai Island; its lingering resentment became the Thunder Manifestation 130 257 259.

The Calamity and Retreat into Eternity

The catastrophe five hundred years before the main story destroyed Ei’s remaining circle. Makoto died at Khaenri’ah, Kitsune Saiguu was swallowed by darkness while fighting the calamity, and monster corruption drove Chiyo to attack Ei. After Chiyo bit through her naginata, Ei used Makoto’s Musou Isshin to sever Chiyo’s sword arm and one horn. Unable to finish her friend off, she allowed Chiyo to flee 54 259.

Terrified of further loss and erosion, Ei pursued an eternity without change. She created Scaramouche as a prototype guardian but judged his sleeping tears a sign of emotional fragility. Rather than destroy a conscious creation, she sealed his powers, left him in Shakkei Pavilion, and gave him a gold ornament identifying him as hers 118 325.

Ei then made the second-generation Raiden Shogun from her own flesh, granting it top-tier divine combat strength without a Gnosis. She encoded her understanding of eternity into its unchanging laws and withdrew into the Plane of Euthymia. Having no further use for the Gnosis and no affection for Celestia, she entrusted it to Yae Miko and severed her connection with Celestia 104 118 325.

Confrontation with Yucheng

Yucheng fought Ei in the Plane of Euthymia after intervening in the Vision Hunt Ceremony. His final clash earned her recognition, allowing him, Lumine, and Miko to discuss Inazuma’s condition with her 95 96 97.

Ei admitted approving the Vision Hunt Decree as part of her effort to prevent change. Yucheng confronted her with reports showing economic, political, military, and cultural decline, alongside evidence of the Tenryou and Kanjou Commissions’ collusion with the Fatui. He contrasted her static eternity with Makoto’s dynamic eternity, in which fulfilled wishes continually produce new aspirations and development 97.

Miko challenged Ei’s withdrawal from her responsibilities, while the light of mortal wishes entered the sealed Plane of Euthymia. Ei began questioning whether immobility had protected her from loss at all 98 99.

Returning to Rule

Ei resumed direct control and supported efforts to rebuild Inazuma. She discussed developing Seirai and Tsurumi Islands, including having former Shogunate and Resistance soldiers clear monsters together to repair their mutual hostility. She appointed Yucheng Regent and granted him the confiscated Kujou Estate as his office and residence 100 103 111.

Her reassessment did not immediately erase her harsh instincts. While acknowledging her misplaced trust in the Tri-Commission and her flawed understanding of eternity, she also declared that destroying Orobashi’s shrines and the Divine Shrine Maiden lineage would have prevented Watatsumi’s continued resistance to integration 110.

Five Hundred Years Against the Shogun

The puppet accepted abolition of the harmful Vision Hunt Decree but resisted ending the Sakoku Decree, which lay at the core of its programmed eternity. Ei entered Makoto’s Consciousness Space to settle their conflict through a contest of wills 118.

After five hundred years of dueling within that space, Ei convinced the Shogun that her new resolve was not erosion. She also planted the Sacred Sakura through Makoto’s power, allowing it to appear in Inazuma’s past and help protect the nation during the calamity. She returned determined to treat the Shogun as her shadow rather than a disposable tool 121.

The Sakoku Decree was officially abolished shortly afterward. At a private celebration, Ei watched Yucheng’s advisers plan for the reopened nation and renewed her commitment to carrying on Makoto’s wishes 122.

Reuniting with Chiyo

When Hu Tao summoned a fragmented soul from a Puppet Core, Ei recognized Chiyo through her characteristic sword dance. Their reunion resolved Chiyo’s lingering desire to apologize, but also threatened to let her soul fade away 259 260 261 262.

Ei had preserved Chiyo’s severed arm and horn in the Plane of Euthymia for five hundred years. These remains gave Yucheng the material needed for Impure World Reincarnation. After Chiyo’s return, the two sparred together and became frequent companions in public 262 263 266 269.

Scaramouche’s New Beginning

Nahida and Yucheng arranged for Scaramouche to return to Inazuma and confront his relationship with Ei. Their meeting culminated in a battle over the sea near Narukami Island, where Ei defeated him with her newly developed Musou Shinsetsu 394 406.

Ei carried away his unconscious body, intending to upgrade its outdated components and inspect it for backdoors left by the Doctor. She resolved to impose fewer restrictions and give both of them a future without their previous regrets. Later, she thanked Yucheng and Nahida for helping Scaramouche become the Akademiya’s Sage of Vahumana 406 431.

Marriage and Reunion with Makoto

Before becoming Yucheng’s partner, Ei agreed to represent his otherwise absent family as an elder at his wedding to Shenhe 380.

Her own relationship with him began after a scheme involving secret medicine went awry. Ei had obtained the medicine from Sara and enlisted Chiyo to bring Miko and Yucheng together; the resulting gathering instead drew Ei, Miko, Sara, and Yucheng into a shared intimate encounter. Ei and Miko subsequently joined the Uchiha Clan, but their relationship with Yucheng was not widely publicized 431.

During the final war, Ei reunited with Makoto’s summoned soul. She acknowledged the suffering caused by her rule, explained how Yucheng had helped change Inazuma, and revealed that she had married him. She identified herself as seventh in his family and told Makoto that Miko and Chiyo had married him as well. Ei later celebrated Yucheng’s victorious return 462.

Appearance

  • Purple eyes: Her eyes flash with Electro during combat and displays of divine power 96 402.
  • Mature figure: Described as a beautiful, mature woman with a voluptuous figure 396 431.
  • Sword manifestation: Draws Musou Isshin from her chest before using her strongest sword techniques 406.

Personality

Ei is a warrior far more naturally suited to combat than government. Her reliance on rigid rules arose from grief: after losing those closest to her, she tried to prevent further suffering by preventing change itself. Her long isolation left her disconnected from ordinary life and unaware of the depth of Inazuma’s decline 32 97 118.

Despite her imposing manner, she is deeply attached to her loved ones. Criticism of Makoto provokes an immediate defensive response, and Chiyo’s threatened disappearance exposes how little repeated bereavement has dulled her feelings. She also remembers former human attendants, including the blind tea master Gushan 97 259 262.

Ei can acknowledge failure and commit herself to difficult change. She accepts evidence against her policies, endures centuries of confrontation with the Shogun, and comes to recognize her creations as individuals rather than instruments. Her later pride in Scaramouche’s academic success marks a shift from judging him solely by his usefulness as Inazuma’s guardian 121 325 431.

Her growing comfort with others also exposes a less intimidating side. At a private banquet, she tries cooking for her guests but produces charcoal-black skewers; Yucheng’s ability to eat them without reacting inspires a rumor that only the Regent can appreciate her food 122.
