Background / History
Childhood and family responsibilities
Chi An grew up in M Country as the son of a wealthy family whose business interests were primarily overseas. He took responsibility for Chi Shuran from an early age, with help from the household butler. His attachment began while she was still a baby: he insisted on keeping her cradle in his bedroom so that he could watch over her 1 167.
He was kidnapped when he was very young, prompting Chi Su and An Muran to lead a rescue into the kidnappers' hideout. During his mother's subsequent recovery, her explanation that angels protected children left him determined to protect both her and his unborn sister. He later told Chi Shuran that she had once possessed wings and gave her wings for three consecutive birthdays. After learning the truth, he secretly had those gifts put away 167 168.
Chi Family training
When Chi Shuran was five, Chi An arranged for her to live with their maternal grandparents in Z Country. Other aristocratic children had been encouraging her to believe that she would eventually enter an arranged marriage; he wanted to remove her from that influence. The Chi Family itself rejected marriage alliances 110.
Chi An began the family's ten-year training program at nine, one year earlier than usual. During that period, he visited his sister whenever he had time, but rarely stayed long. He promised his mother that he would protect Chi Shuran and become capable of keeping the family stable 110.
He later clarified that the program was not assassin or deserted-island training. Its purpose was to develop well-rounded successors, identify their strengths and interests, and cultivate their abilities 177.
University and first relationship
Chi An remained in M Country for university. On his first day of registration, he was followed and targeted by other students. Fu Yanci watched him fighting from a tree and was immediately attracted to his fierce, cold demeanor. Their early encounters also included Fu Yanci carrying him to a restroom entrance to watch a rejected student cry 32 104 173.
The two eventually dated, but Fu Yanci's possessiveness, temper, and desire to confine him drove Chi An to leave and end the relationship. Chi An returned to Z Country after their breakup 55 109 110.
Appearance
- Build: Stands 180 cm tall and has visibly defined eight-pack abdominal muscles 34 134.
- Complexion: Has notably fair skin, particularly emphasized in descriptions of his hands 108.
- Looks: Attracts attention for his beauty even before the variety show's livestream begins 3.
- University demeanor: Fu Yanci remembers him as fierce and cold, describing his university-era beauty as different from his present appearance 104.
- Eyesight: Mildly nearsighted; he struggles to distinguish distant objects and avoids underwater spearfishing because he might accidentally hurt someone 2 123 133.
Personality
Chi An is sharp-tongued, calculating, and difficult to embarrass. He routinely answers questions with deadpan nonsense, turns Chi Shuran's complaints against her, and bargains for advantages rather than accepting requests at face value. He agrees to join her variety show for seventy percent of her earnings, then separately negotiates three years of protection from their mother's blind-date arrangements 1 5 9.
His antagonistic exchanges with Chi Shuran conceal a longstanding protective role. He removed her from harmful childhood influences, reassures her that she is free to choose her own partner, and plans business support for her entertainment career. An Muran worries that he has spent too much of his life protecting other people instead of living for himself 110 168 175.
Chi An insists on personal boundaries in his relationship with Fu Yanci. He refuses to treat possessiveness as sufficient reason to remain together, demands changes in behavior, and only agrees to resume dating after recognizing genuine effort. By their marriage registration, he resolves to stop testing the relationship or leaving Fu Yanci as the only one reaching out 55 56 109 181.
He is also particular about cleanliness. He dislikes saliva, refuses to keep wearing a shirt fouled by a monkey, and angrily rejects Fu Yanci's attempt to kiss him before brushing his teeth 114 134.
Abilities & Skills
Combat and physical conditioning
Chi An's combat ability comes from the Chi Family's ten-year training program 110.
- Sends the 192 cm-tall Fu Yanci flying with a single punch 93.
- Throws a bamboo pole over the heads of eavesdropping cast members and embeds it in the ground behind them 93.
- Defeats three men before rejoining Fu Yanci at a private gathering 160.
- Uses improvised weapons, including wooden sticks and bamboo poles, rather than relying exclusively on his fists 81 93.
Armed-threat response
Chi An remains composed when confronted with a gun and recognizes details about its ammunition capacity 81.
- Evades four close-range shots and moves behind the gunman before tripping him 81.
- Distracts the man with a raised wooden stick while Fu Yanci takes the gun away 81.
- Claims that he previously trained while five people aimed guns at him; Chi Shuran separately describes him as having survived a “hail of bullets” 81.
Strategy and business judgment
Chi An applies planning to family affairs, investigations, and aristocratic politics.
- Asks Fu Yanci to investigate Li Nanyi and keep information ready, acknowledging that the Chi Family's lack of operations in Z Country makes local entertainment-industry inquiries difficult 87.
- Uses a branch-office discussion to let Chi Ye assess Fu Yanci's business capabilities 172.
- Proposes entering Z Country's entertainment industry to provide backing for Chi Shuran and Zhou Zhichu 175.
- Welcomes the rivalry between royal siblings Emily and Eric because it keeps them occupied with each other; identifies Etienne as the successor supported by the major families 180.
Practical skills and limitations
- Outdoor work: Picks apples, turns soil, searches for eggs, and gathers food during filming 19 33 64 100.
- Resourceful food gathering: Stuns a fish with a net before collecting it and agitates crayfish in a basin before handling them 100 101.
- Animal handling: Quickly bags a troublesome monkey, restrains it, and later rescues it after it falls into the sea 133 134.
- Basic first aid: Cleans and wraps Fu Yanci's injured hand, though the dressing is described as haphazard 37.
- Food preparation: Can cut meat, bamboo shoots, and fruit, but describes himself as hopeless in the kitchen. His later claim to “cook” amounts to preparing cut fruit 76 110 114 199.
