Background / History

Captivity and Rescue

The Ten Rings hold Tony and Yinsen in an Afghan cave for almost three months, demanding that Tony build missiles. Yinsen’s encouragement keeps Tony from giving up, and the pair secretly construct the Mark I as their means of escape 3.

Li Ang attacks the camp while the armor is nearing completion. Mistaking him for an enemy, Tony punches him, only for Li Ang to catch the armored fist with one hand. After identifying himself as a rescuer, Li Ang leads Tony and Yinsen out and kills the remaining terrorists 3 4.

Tony initially offers $200 million for the rescue; Li Ang asks for $500 million and a future favor. Tony also offers another $10 million to be driven to safety rather than carried through the air. In a border town, he contacts Colonel Rhodes and learns that Li Ang’s main objective is publicity 4.

Changing Stark Industries

During the journey home, Tony reflects on seeing Stark-branded weapons used against him. He recognizes that his work has focused on destruction rather than protection, with the Mark I standing as an exception 5.

Back in New York, Tony agrees to introduce Li Ang publicly as a hero representing Stark Technology. At the press conference, he thanks Li Ang and announces the closure of Stark Industries’ weapons division, declaring that the company has avoided responsibility for the harm its products cause. Happy subsequently delivers Li Ang’s $500 million payment 5 7.

Yinsen survives the rescue in this story, but Tony still abandons weapons manufacturing and pursues protective armor technology 3 7.

Armor Development and the Flight Race

Tony invites Li Ang to help develop armor based partly on his rescuer’s abilities, including flight and energy attacks. Li Ang moves equipment, welds components with Heat Vision, and prevents injuries during testing 11 12.

After completing the Mark II, Tony challenges Li Ang to a race. Although Tony reaches Mach 1.5, Li Ang catches him while casually flying at Mach 5. Tony then attempts to win an altitude contest, ignoring JARVIS’s icing warning. The suit loses power at approximately 10,000 meters, and its frozen exterior prevents him from deploying the parachute 12.

Li Ang breaks away the ice and carries Tony safely down. Tony acknowledges that he has been saved again, accepts Li Ang as a friend, and promises to build him armor 13.

Obadiah’s Betrayal

Tony initially refuses to believe Li Ang’s warnings about Obadiah, the man who helped raise him. Continued illegal weapons sales eventually convince him that a senior executive is responsible. Because Obadiah uses an independent server inaccessible to JARVIS, Tony asks Pepper to approach his computer and gather evidence 14 15.

Obadiah later incapacitates Tony with a buzzing device and removes his chest reactor. A computer virus has also disabled JARVIS. Li Ang restores Tony using the old reactor Pepper preserved, allowing him to suit up and pursue Obadiah’s Iron Monger 17 18.

Tony’s missiles and palm weapons cannot penetrate Iron Monger’s defenses, and his remaining energy falls dangerously low. Li Ang intervenes and kills Obadiah. Although Tony is deeply grateful for the rescue, he does not know that Li Ang had watched the reactor theft before stepping in 18 19.

Island Research and the Harlem Battle

After Obadiah’s death, Tony appoints Pepper chief executive and concentrates on research. He buys a private island with existing living facilities to serve as a shared laboratory and testing ground for himself and Li Ang. Banner stays there and assists with experiments 26 37.

When Li Ang becomes encased in a mysterious green shell following gamma-ray exposure, Tony retrieves him and tries unsuccessfully to cut through the material. With Li Ang unavailable, Tony answers Nick Fury’s call about Abomination’s attack on Harlem 26.

Tony confronts Abomination, but repulsor fire and precision missile strikes fail to injure him. Abomination grabs Tony and throws him into a pickup truck. Tony later watches Li Ang overpower the creature and instructs JARVIS to record the fight 27 28 29.

Palladium Poisoning

While researching portable armor, Tony realizes that his physical condition is deteriorating. His palladium poisoning becomes severe, and Li Ang later finds him hungover and dispirited in his island laboratory 26 36 37.

Li Ang gives him one Magic Divine Tree leaf, which dissolves upon consumption and reduces the palladium concentration in his blood almost to zero. He refuses Tony’s request for more leaves, insisting that Tony find a lasting solution himself 37.

Nick Fury delivers Howard Stark’s belongings, and Li Ang encourages Tony to examine them. They contain a clue concerning a new element; Tony has successfully created that element by the time he studies Uru at Stark Tower 38 50.

Stark Tower and Uru Research

Stark Tower’s completion marks Stark Industries’ transition into an energy company. The entire building runs on Tony’s Arc Reactor 50.

Li Ang brings Tony a large chunk of Uru from Asgard, arriving through a portal that leaves Tony astonished. Tony and JARVIS analyze the metal’s internal structure, but Tony recognizes that existing technology cannot melt it. Learning that Asgardians forge it using a stellar core leaves him frustrated; no completed Uru armor is shown 48 50.

Personality

Tony is proud of his engineering and intensely competitive. Li Ang’s superior flight speed drives him to improve his armor, consider an anti-Li Ang suit, and push the Mark II beyond JARVIS’s safety warnings. His frustration also extends to supernatural phenomena that challenge his scientific understanding 11 12 22 50.

He frequently deflects serious emotions with sarcasm, flirtation, and crude jokes. During the flight home from captivity, he answers a question about being called the “Merchant of Death” with a sexual joke rather than openly admitting how much the experience has changed him 5.

His actions nevertheless show a growing sense of responsibility. He closes the weapons division, attacks terrorists using his upgraded armor, and volunteers to confront Abomination. He also expresses sincere gratitude toward Li Ang and becomes visibly concerned when he believes his friend has been seriously injured 7 15 27 40 41.

Abilities & Skills

Engineering and Invention

Tony designs powered armor, miniature reactors, propulsion systems, and a new element 3 12 50.

  • Builds the Mark I under captivity using limited materials 3 14.
  • Develops palm stabilizers and propulsion units by hand 12.
  • Creates blue armor for Li Ang with an opening chassis, onboard scanner, and FRIDAY interface 37 38.

Tony uses powered armor for flight, protection, and ranged attacks.

  • Flight: The Mark II reaches Mach 1.5 during its race with Li Ang 12.
  • Weapons: Uses palm energy weapons, wrist missiles, and armor-piercing settings 18 19 27.
  • Demonstrated limits: Cannot penetrate Iron Monger’s defenses or seriously injure Abomination with the attacks shown 19 27.
  • Operational risks: Early armor is vulnerable to high-altitude icing, power loss, and depleted reactor reserves 12 19.

JARVIS-Assisted Analysis

JARVIS supports Tony’s research, flight, security, and communications.

  • Monitors armor performance and compares flight data 12.
  • Uses Stark satellites to observe military activity 12.
  • Detects gamma-ray traces and scans unfamiliar materials 26 50.
  • Cannot readily access Obadiah’s isolated server and is temporarily disabled by a specially prepared virus 15 18.
