Background / History
Investigating Chen Mo
Fury first observed Chen Mo through surveillance footage of his confrontation with Abomination and Tony Stark. After Chen Mo disappeared with Abomination, Fury classified him as an unknown teleporter of the highest priority, suppressed footage, and ordered a full investigation. He also sought contact with Stark, expecting Tony’s wounded pride to drive an independent investigation that S.H.I.E.L.D. could observe 72.
When conventional records produced no useful lead, Fury ordered investigators to examine the physical evidence Chen Mo had left behind—including the crater, the ground beneath him, and a Coca-Cola bottle 72 73.
Hydra’s Takeover of Headquarters
After Brock Rumlow and four accompanying agents were exposed as Hydra members, Fury secretly traced their authorizations. Their arrest papers, equipment, and intelligence had been approved through three separate departments, revealing infiltration well beyond a single operational unit 79.
Hydra interrupted the investigation by seizing network permissions, communications, and access controls. Fury fought his way out of the command room after being wounded in the abdomen. Natasha Romanoff and Clint Barton helped him reach the hangar, where Hydra troops surrounded them before Chen Mo intervened 79 80.
Fury negotiated for Chen Mo to purge headquarters, offering access to classified resources before securing his cooperation with information about unidentified remains recovered in the South Pacific. Chen Mo killed the infiltrators almost simultaneously; Hill subsequently reported 2,137 deaths 80 81 82.
Still wounded, Fury ordered the surviving agents to secure the armory, communications center, and entrances. He then escorted Chen Mo, Natasha, and Tony into a concealed facility containing the remains, which Chen Mo identified as a Deviant and accepted as payment 82 83.
The Deviants and Eternals
Fury questioned Chen Mo about the Deviants’ creators and whether more remained on Earth. Although Chen Mo had saved him, Fury refused to surrender S.H.I.E.L.D.’s surviving intelligence network without an explanation of his next targets. He insisted that knowing whether the mysterious individuals were threats or protectors made a difference 83 85.
After Phastos was identified, Fury sought time to investigate his home and protect his spouse and children. Chen Mo promised that the family were not targets but departed before Fury could arrange an evacuation 86.
Their negotiations also secured S.H.I.E.L.D. a share of Eternals technology. Chen Mo later gave Tony a storage device containing Phastos’s mechanical and energy technology and instructed him to deliver Fury a copy 86 95.
Rebuilding S.H.I.E.L.D.
The headquarters purge did not eliminate Hydra’s overseas bases. Subsequent clashes in Europe, South America, and Asia caused losses on both sides, while the technology supplied by Chen Mo drew demands and questions from national governments 137 139.
Fury contacted Chen Mo primarily to establish whether he would cooperate with Hydra. Once Chen Mo rejected that possibility, Fury asked him to give notice before attacking Hydra members and to avoid densely populated areas. He also assigned Coulson to accompany Chen Mo and Tony 139.
When Thor arrived at Stark Tower, Fury initially demanded custody of both him and Mjolnir. He accepted temporary accommodation under Stark Industries after Coulson relayed Chen Mo’s warning that Thor’s father might be capable of destroying Earth, but required continued monitoring 149 151.
Captain America and the Tesseract
Chen Mo’s recovery of the frozen Steve Rogers presented Fury with both an experienced combatant and a symbol capable of stabilizing S.H.I.E.L.D. after the Hydra purge. Fury ordered a secret medical response, then reluctantly agreed to exchange the Tesseract for Steve after confirming that he was alive 154 155.
Steve’s awakening nearly resulted in Fury being struck by his shield, which Chen Mo intercepted. Fury subsequently mediated between Steve and Tony and completed the Tesseract transfer despite Steve’s objections 156 157 158.
When Steve continued demanding the Stone’s surrender, Fury defused the confrontation by revealing that Peggy Carter was still alive. With Steve and Coulson gone, he pressed Chen Mo for details about the alien army that might follow the Tesseract’s signal 159.
Fury learned of Thanos’s plan to collect the Infinity Stones and erase half of all life. His immediate concern was whether Earth would become a target: Chen Mo’s ability to defeat an invader would not necessarily prevent cities from being destroyed. Although interested in capturing alien technology, Fury agreed with Tony that their existing forces could not yet sustain an interstellar war 160 161.
The Arctic Battle and Asgardian Affairs
When Chen Mo diverted Loki to the Arctic, Fury mobilized Romanoff, Barton, Rogers, and Banner. As Loki’s cold threatened to spread beyond the battlefield, Fury prepared for escalation and demanded rescue efforts for the incapacitated Tony 168 171 173.
The Ancient One ultimately suppressed Loki’s magic. Fury’s instruments could not explain the abrupt collapse in his energy readings; the absence of usable evidence led him to suspect Chen Mo’s involvement 174 175.
After Loki’s capture, Fury personally attempted to interrogate him. He also showed Steve an experimental enhancement serum developed from Stark’s energy technology, Steve’s blood, and S.H.I.E.L.D. records, warning that its success rate was only 62 percent 176.
Fury later participated in the staged security operation intended to give Thor an opportunity to rescue Loki. The resulting destruction left him arguing with Tony over repair costs. After Chen Mo defeated Loki again, Fury questioned whether even Captain Marvel could stop Chen Mo if he turned against Earth 179 180 186 187 188.
Crime Syndicate Attack
During the Crime Syndicate’s assault on headquarters, Fury ruled out large-scale bombing because personnel remained inside. Rather than contact Chen Mo, he activated a dedicated emergency signal to summon Tony 210.
When the invaders breached the command room, Fury initiated a database wipe and reactor overload before escaping with Hill through an emergency chute. Nite Owl stopped the self-destruct and recovered the files, including S.H.I.E.L.D.’s assessment of Chen Mo as a possible cosmic-level threat 212.
Global Defense Integration
Following the attack, Fury warned that national governments and the World Security Council would resist surrendering control of their defenses. He nevertheless agreed to present Chen Mo’s integration plan to the council before Chen Mo acted independently 224 225.
Fury then directed joint operations against illegal bases and armed groups. Wakanda’s interception of troops, drones, and a military satellite became a major obstacle; after its eventual agreement to join, Fury announced inspections of its arsenal, records, and energy nodes 226 233 234.
With Brainiac identified as a threat, Fury deployed twelve joint task forces, supported by Wakanda, against Hydra, the Ten Rings, the Hand, and other dangerous organizations. He removed civilian areas from the operational map and used Chen Mo’s backing to commandeer satellites, weapons, reactors, and experimental equipment despite political objections 235 236.
The arrival of Asgardian soldiers and dwarf craftsmen created a new logistical crisis at the Pacific experimental base. Projected monthly expenses reached 670 percent over budget, prompting Fury to confront Thor over their upkeep. When Chen Mo suggested using funds seized from Hydra vaults, Fury defended them as reserves for postwar reconstruction, then dropped the argument 237 238.
Appearance
Fury is a bald Black man with one remaining eye—the right—and a black trench coat 72 82 156 158 159.
- Right eye: Used for retinal authentication at the concealed Deviant facility 82.
- Black trench coat: Conceals his sidearm and, during the Arctic crisis, a pager he had not used in years 79 171.
- Abdominal wound: Sustained during Hydra’s takeover; treated first by Natasha and later by medics 79 80 85.
Personality
Fury is suspicious, methodical, and accustomed to managing information. He uses Stark’s curiosity as an investigative tool, orders evidence suppression, and conducts the initial inquiry into Rumlow’s authorizations without leaving a search record 72 79.
His pragmatism does not mean unquestioning obedience. He explicitly distinguishes owing Chen Mo his life from surrendering his judgment, refuses unexplained access to intelligence assets, and seeks protection for Phastos’s uninvolved family 85 86.
Earth’s survival remains his central concern. He worries about the destruction a victorious battle could still cause, rejects bombing an occupied headquarters, and excludes civilian areas from the later crackdown 160 210 235.
Fury is also acutely budget-conscious. Repair bills, disappointing equipment performance, and Asgardian supply costs repeatedly provoke arguments with Tony and Thor. Once backed by Chen Mo, however, he becomes markedly more forceful toward political authorities and rival organizations 187 188 212 236 237.
