Background / History
Arrival and First Hunts
Chen Mo awakens in a filthy alley after an event that had left him apparently charred. He recognizes the Seven and understands that he is in a world where superheroes’ public images conceal extensive abuse. With no identification, home, money, or contacts, he initially considers finding a way back to China 1.
His first investigations follow the scent of Compound V into a Bloods warehouse. Consuming the gang leader Raymond reveals Marlow’s black-market operation, giving Chen Mo both a route toward further evolution and evidence of human trafficking and experimentation 3 5.
At Gray Whale Parking Lot, he attacks the drug sale and encounters three experimental captives. He reluctantly consumes Brian and Lisa after they attack, learning how they were abducted and transformed. He frees Mia, carries her away from the arriving police, and accepts Allen’s offer of shelter 7 9.
Infiltrating and Confronting Vought
After developing disguise, Chen Mo infiltrates a superhuman club, consumes its experimental drugs and several superhumans, and eventually replaces A-Train. Operating inside Vought gives him money, access, and time to grow while avoiding an immediate confrontation with Homelander 10 11 13 16 17 20 22.
A laboratory raid provides flight, energy projection, and carbon-based defenses. These upgrades allow him to fight Homelander despite still trailing him in raw strength and speed 26 27.
Edgar later offers resources and hunting targets in exchange for eliminating Vought’s unstable assets. Chen Mo refuses after learning what the company did to Mia’s father, prompting a coordinated attack by Homelander, Stormfront, Black Noir, and other superhumans 39 40 41 42.
He subsequently consumes Soldier Boy and, by his return to the safe house, has also killed and eaten Homelander. He then issues orders to Edgar at Vought Tower while international governments debate investigations and possible nuclear action against him 54 65.
Eternals and the Altered War
Working with S.H.I.E.L.D. and Tony Stark, Chen Mo uses recovered star-map data to locate the Eternals. He kills and consumes Eternals at a ravine and later acquires additional combat abilities in Australia 85 94 98.
In an altered wartime setting, he discovers enhanced-soldier programs and Sebastian Shaw’s hidden control over Germany. He spares Katyusha after copying her power, assigning her to gather survivors, research, weapons, and useful modified humans while prohibiting civilian experimentation 103 119 129.
Chen Mo traces Shaw’s Supreme Class Project to an Arctic base, copies his energy-absorption system, and overcomes his attempt to unleash all his stored energy 129 133 135.
Cosmic Threats and Death’s Contract
At the New York Sanctum, Chen Mo matches Odin’s divine force using the Million-Star Network. The Ancient One prevents their confrontation from destroying the building and agrees that Chen Mo is powerful enough to learn which cosmic beings could threaten him 143.
After exposing the Space Stone inside the Tesseract, Chen Mo agrees to the Ancient One’s plan to use it as bait for Loki and indirectly test Thanos. He insists on participating as the plan’s “director,” retaining the freedom to change events 158 165.
His later battles produce an internal world and bring him into conflict with Cul. Cul’s Destined Death severely damages him, but Death removes the lingering flames, grants him access to death-powered attacks, and negotiates a temporary-worker contract. His first collection target is Yao—the Ancient One 192 196 199 200 201 202.
Cross-World Campaigns
Chen Mo dismantles the Crime Syndicate’s defenses and locates Nite Owl’s lunar base. An outside party erases information about itself from Nite Owl’s memories, but Chen Mo retains interdimensional technology and coordinates associated with the Justice League 218 220 222.
After helping supply a super-mecha project, he opens a passage toward that universe. Encountering the World Forger prompts him to conceal his true body within the interspace rather than approach recklessly 238 239 240.
He joins the Joker Gang through V and investigates the forces behind its enemies. His encounters include Doomsday and another Nite Owl, whose memories he searches for information about the Batman Who Laughs 246 263 265.
Chen Mo later helps Barry and Clark in Metropolis, overwhelms a resurrected Doomsday, and fights The Devastator inside the sun. After the wider crisis, he removes hostile Kryptonians’ powers, proposes the Justice League’s name, accepts Batman’s communicator, and accompanies Bruce to Gotham 280 288 297 304 306 307.
Appearance
- Natural appearance: A young Asian man with delicate facial features 7 20 22.
- Usual clothing: A nondescript gray hoodie and casual pants 7 44.
- Blacklight manifestations: Black-and-red filaments, tendrils, and living flesh emerge beneath or through his skin during healing, transformation, and consumption 1 5 10.
- Combat form: Black or black-and-red carapace, frequently accompanied by glowing dark-red eyes; the armor becomes heavier and more elaborate as he evolves 7 26 40.
- Wings: Initially broad dark-red flesh wings with metallic-looking edges; later reconstructed into metallic wings with jet ports 26 52.
- Later markings: Scarlet-gold patterns accompany his internal-world power, while Death’s contract leaves a small black flame burning in his left pupil 191 201.
Personality
Chen Mo treats combat, consumption, and employment as material for constant jokes. He calls enemies meals, describes hunting as collecting allowances, and mocks both allies and opponents. His behavior also reflects genuine enjoyment of dangerous fights: after consuming Soldier Boy, he welcomes the prospect of a stronger Homelander as a better opponent 13 55 110 238.
Preserving his identity matters more to him than satisfying Blacklight’s instincts. He initially declares that good people and innocents are not food, refuses to consume Mia despite finding her more appetizing than Compound V, and insists that he is “Chen Mo first.” He also keeps bathing and sleeping after his body no longer requires either 2 10 138.
His restraint is selective rather than consistently heroic. He releases an uninvolved janitor and forbids Katyusha from experimenting on civilians, yet also erases Osaka with a space-based attack and causes enormous destruction across Japan. He openly tells the Joker Gang that he killed the Obsidian Troops because they tried to capture him, not because he intended to rescue strangers 49 119 246.
He fiercely protects his autonomy. His negotiations with Death make ownership of his body, consciousness, and soul non-negotiable, and he rejects permanent service, fixed working hours, and compulsory reporting 201.
Abilities & Skills
Blacklight Consumption and Assimilation
Blacklight converts consumed bodies into biological material, memories, and usable power structures 5 26 54.
- Extracts identities, routes, technical knowledge, and combat experience from victims 10 14 129.
- Assimilates superhuman genes and combines abilities rather than merely reproducing them separately 52 54.
- Can copy powers without killing the source, as demonstrated with Katyusha 119.
- Can lose access to information erased before extraction; Nite Owl’s unknown sponsor removes its own traces from his memories 222.
Regeneration and Adaptive Biology
His body continually reconstructs damaged tissue and modifies itself in response to new materials and threats 4 73 199.
- Early regeneration expels a bullet and closes the wound, though the injury still hurts 4.
- Later Blacklight combat can continue while even a single cell remains 191.
- Ordinary food, sleep, and bathing become unnecessary while sufficient energy remains stored 138.
- Adaptation is not instantaneous immunity: Cul’s death flames halt regeneration locally and destroy repeated generations of cells before resistance begins improving 196 199.
Shapeshifting and Biological Weapons
Chen Mo remodels his appearance and turns his body into weapons, armor, or large masses of living material 10 27 191.
- Alters faces, skin tone, fingerprints, and body proportions for infiltration 10 11 17.
- Produces blades, hammerfists, whips, shields, spikes, and restraining tendrils 13 27 50.
- Incorporates clothing and replicated combat suits into his transformations 16 19.
- Penetrates and takes control of a mechanical armor shell through its gaps and nanoparticle interfaces 271.
Enhanced Senses and Combat Perception
His senses extend beyond ordinary sight and hearing 5 13.
- Reads bodily structures, circulation, temperature, and relative nutritional value 5.
- Tracks A-Train’s killing intent through emotional perception when ordinary vision cannot follow him 14.
- Detects Translucent through breathing and heartbeat despite his invisibility 19.
- Uses telekinetic scanning, X-ray vision, and specialized radiation-sensitive organs to investigate hidden structures and targets 128 129 281.
- His mind contains chaotic assimilated consciousnesses that cause Charles to recoil from attempted communication 111.
Energy Manipulation and Absorption
Chen Mo integrates multiple energy systems into his evolving body 52 54.
- Projects flames, Heat Vision, energy blasts, radiation, and golden Cosmic Energy constructs 13 26 54 98.
- Uses telekinesis to move objects, restrain targets, and clear air ahead during flight 41 52 158.
- Absorbs, stores, and redirects external energy through Shaw’s copied circulation system 133 135.
- Draws power from stellar heat and nuclear fusion while fighting inside the sun 297.
Transmutation, Illusions, and Genetic Suppression
His assimilated abilities include tools for altering matter, perception, and other beings’ powers 94 304.
- Acquires matter transmutation from Sersi and illusions from Sprite 94.
- Can sever and seal genetic segments responsible for bodily superpowers without consuming the entire person 303 304.
- Before acquiring transmutation, his own armor is vulnerable to Sersi turning it into stone; shifting components allow him to overcome the localized transformation 94.
Internal World, Avatars, and Dimensional Travel
Chen Mo houses an evolving world within his body and operates through separated manifestations 192 200 202.
- Draws on the Million-Star Network and awakens numerous stellar avatars 143 200.
- Creates a weakened avatar to return to Earth and uses clones to distract enemies 202 220.
- Opens spatial rifts using acquired interdimensional coordinates 222 239.
- Can conceal his true body while investigating dangerous worlds 240.
- His later fight inside the sun specifically strengthens an avatar, not necessarily his entire distributed existence 297.
Laws of Death
Death’s gift and contract allow Chen Mo to sustain black flames and apply death’s rules through his attacks 200 201.
- Blacklight analyzes and copies the rules into newly formed cells 200.
- The contract preserves his ownership of his body, consciousness, and soul 201.
- Access to this power does not make him Death’s equal: she can still his internal world and deprive him of bodily control 200.
