Background / History
Origin and bond with Leo
Yaoyao first appears as a timid, charcoal-like creature on Leo’s shoulder after Leo’s advancement to a Level One Elemental Wizard. Leo introduces him to Benji as his soul companion—a partner who shares his life and death rather than occupying a subordinate, replaceable position 120.
The initial account explains that Yaoyao appeared in the Shadow World when Leo’s soul-tearing technique separated one-tenth of his soul. Yaoyao swallowed the fragment, followed the Nuclear Shadow’s connection, and consumed that shadow as well. Because their souls became connected, Leo retained the separated portion rather than losing it 121.
Yaoyao initially has no accessible memories. His true origin is revealed much later: Leo’s previous self split off a consciousness so that he would not be lonely, and that consciousness became Yaoyao. Leo realizes that Yaoyao is another expression of himself and grieves over the isolation he endured in the Shadow World after Leo’s death 121 957.
Education and early expeditions
Leo teaches Yaoyao through their shared memories, hoping to develop an independent assistant comparable to Gavarci’s potion-master soul companion, Lilith. Yaoyao completes Earth’s basic education in a single day, but also discovers Earth’s films and television. He rapidly acquires foul language, theatrical boasting, and habits Leo struggles to correct 125.
During a visit to the Gulu Beasts, Yaoyao leads more than ten thousand juveniles through the forest, evicting other creatures, stripping trees, and provoking bee-like pursuers. Benji assigns nearly every Gulu Beast of Level One or above to protect him. Leo eventually retrieves him through their soul connection, silences him, and takes him on a covert operation 125.
In Giant World, Yaoyao secretly arranges the capture of the rank-one giant Wakeda with other wizards’ assistance. He extracts the location of Wakeda’s tribe in the Left Bank Dense Forest, explaining that he wants to ease Leo’s workload and earn military merit. Leo does not forbid the work, but insists that Yaoyao inform him before taking further risks 173.
Academy work and resource gathering
Yaoyao’s responsibilities extend beyond accompanying Leo into battle. In Tiyama City, he trains apprentices and investigates incoming residents. He later offers practical instruction to Leo’s students and becomes an effective logistics director on New Earth 208 247 426.
Despite his unruly behavior around Leo, Benji and the Gulu Beasts genuinely respect him. While Leo spends long periods in his laboratory, Yaoyao is a major reason affairs outside continue running smoothly 270.
His resource gathering also becomes increasingly consequential. During the Homo Sapiens World expedition, he steals thousands of tonnes of planetary core material without altering the wizards’ monitor readings; the Shadow Space reaches 600 meters on each side. After the academy disaster, he spends a month emptying protected stores and private collections to support Leo’s recovery and growth 302 366 368.
Losses, recovery, and major wars
Alice and Benji’s deaths deeply affect Yaoyao. While searching the academy during Leo’s Level Three advancement, he shows little interest in treasure and cannot celebrate the breakthrough. He instead wonders whether greater strength earlier might have prevented their deaths 365.
During Leo’s subsequent recovery, Yaoyao undertakes the repair of the Godslaying Wizard Robe. He repeatedly draws supplies from the Shadow Space over two years, consuming roughly half its contents. The finished robe gains new shadow-based functions and becomes a major component of Leo’s strengthened combat system 394 434.
In the World Cluster War, a Level-Five Lord of Souls recognizes Yaoyao as a living Shadow World creature and wants to consume him. Leo and Yaoyao decide the pursuer must be eliminated before he exposes their secret, then lure him into a prepared space 564.
Yaoyao later prepares the shadow ropes and altered soul statues used to imprison the World Tree. After Leo, Baturu, and Black Soluo extract its soul, Yaoyao remains behind as its guard. Leo credits him with over forty percent of the achievement 801 804.
Supreme Lord preparations and counterattack
Yaoyao proposes that Leo seek the Shadow World’s recognition as a route to Supreme Lord. He explains that Leo must help bring its shadows to life, suggesting that souls resurrected by Xiao San be sent there to find a viable life-form. Leo entrusts the attempt to him while preparing alternatives 891.
Following Leo’s rebirth in the Shadow World, Yaoyao discovers that Leo’s shadow affinity and control have surpassed his own. He nevertheless accompanies Leo as he restores his levels and advances toward Supreme Lord 954 957.
When Supreme Lords threaten the Shadow Plane, Yaoyao invokes its world power against them. Bloodline Controller interrupts him, but Yaoyao escapes and closes every spatial passage from the plane, trapping Bloodline Controller’s forces and severing the Wizard Will’s control over Leo’s physical body. He then enters that body and resists the Guardians’ attempts to expel him 983 984 985.
Appearance
- Body: Palm-sized, charcoal-black, and rounded, with a belly he frequently thrusts out when proud 120 228.
- Face: Large, expressive eyes and a tiny slit-like mouth that is almost invisible when closed 120.
- Limbs: Four extremely short limbs, described as shorter than a fingernail during his forest adventures 120 125.
- Physical nature: Semi-illusory rather than flesh and blood; animated metal flows around him instead of adhering to his body 328.
- Usual position: Sits on Leo’s shoulder, clings to his ear, or shelters inside his giant forms’ ear canals 120 126 236.
- Fear response: His body can swell into a ball when terrified 564.
Personality
Yaoyao begins cautious and easily frightened, hiding behind Leo’s neck when confronted by Benji’s powerful aura. After exploring Leo’s memories, he becomes restless, argumentative, profane, and fond of casting himself as a conquering hero. His claims can be extravagantly inflated: at one banquet, he credits himself with seventy percent of Leo’s achievements 120 125 207.
He loves attention, praise, and authority. Leo’s compliments readily make him reveal information or take on work, while even minor opportunities to direct others delight him. He also hoards wealth, conceals private treasuries, and fiercely objects when Leo tries to reclaim supplies 228 274 305 804.
His teasing and opportunism coexist with loyalty and practical competence. He protects Leo from intrusive apprentices, condemns Charlotte’s apparent betrayal, and handles work that Leo overlooks. Alice and Benji’s deaths expose a much quieter side of him, leaving him unable to enjoy either treasure hunting or Leo’s advancement 255 270 365 470.
Yaoyao enjoys female company and uses Leo’s crystal ball to maintain those connections. He later favors Litasha’s company because he considers her intelligent and socially perceptive 149 394.
Abilities & Skills
Shared Soul
Yaoyao and Leo possess a connected soul, giving their relationship functions beyond ordinary communication 121.
- They can sense one another and access each other’s memories 121.
- Yaoyao can learn directly from Leo’s remembered knowledge, including the material needed for computational work 125 133.
- Leo can normally retrieve him through their bond and impose a gag order 125.
- The bond also extends to Leo’s split-soul clone, Black Soluo 573.
- Sudden increases in mental power can overwhelm Yaoyao: an unstable soul transformation temporarily renders him unconscious in Giant World 160.
- External seals can interrupt their usual access to each other, as happens in the Hundred-Page World 457 465.
Shadow World Travel and Perception
Yaoyao can travel through the Shadow World and the interstitial world, bypassing restrictions that affect ordinary spatial movement 143.
- Guides Leo through the Shadow World’s distorted geography 225.
- Crosses a spatial lockdown that seals only the surface layer of space 143.
- Enters and leaves Leo’s Shadow Space without detectable spatial fluctuations 202.
- Uses the Godslaying Wizard Robe’s Shadow World travel to rescue Leo when an enemy World Lord blocks Shadow Walking 454.
- Detects shadow-dwelling creatures whose concealment is effective against others 482.
- Supplies positional information when Leo’s senses are cursed, allowing him to counterattack accurately 486.
- Early travel methods can leave Leo severely disoriented even at Level Three; the robe’s version initially carries the same drawback 434.
Shadow Shaping and Soul Anchors
Yaoyao physically manipulates shadows into weapons, ropes, statues, and collecting agents 170 229 434 515.
- Black needles: Rolls shadows into piercing weapons; later pins three already-wounded Level Two wizards’ limbs to the ground 170 212.
- Soul anchor: Creates a shadow statue connected to Leo’s soul and anchored in the Shadow World to prevent his soul from being absorbed 229.
- Shadow ropes: Kneads multiple shadows together and draws them into ropes capable of binding powerful targets 515.
- Collecting shadows: Commands three thousand small shadows incorporated into the repaired robe; objects they touch can be transferred into Leo’s Shadow Space 434.
Historical Shadow Binding
Yaoyao can bind the shadows that objects previously left in the Shadow World, allowing Leo and the Shadow Space to pull those objects into their possession 515 517.
- Successfully secures the three pieces that combine into the universe-grade Black Metal Module 515 516.
- Binds the Hundred-Page World and World Tree, although their weight initially prevents retrieval 516 668.
- Helps Leo pull out the Endless Pot’s shadow after his Level Five advancement 668.
- Uses their shared soul as the anchor; exceeding its binding capacity risks destabilizing it and dragging them into other periods of Shadow World time 517.
- Cannot duplicate unique lives or universe-grade treasures after obtaining them 517.
- Binding a target does not guarantee they have enough strength to retrieve it 517 668.
Nuclear Calculations and Combat Support
By consuming Leo’s Nuclear Shadow, Yaoyao inherits its radiation-related ability and becomes a vessel for nuclear-fission work 122.
- Trains by calculating controlled fission reactions, helping replenish Leo’s energy and charge the Godslaying Staff 137.
- Assists Leo through seven days of nuclear-fission calculations during his extreme hunger 270.
- Throws Leo’s prepared electrical spheres into puppet armies, triggering chains of nuclear explosions; these attacks remain ineffective against Level Four opponents 554.
- Coordinates puppets stored in the Shadow Space, preparing to release more than three hundred during a confrontation 471.
Crafting and Shadow Plane Administration
Yaoyao combines shadow manipulation with equipment modification and management of Leo’s territory 426 434 684.
- Repairs and enhances the Godslaying Wizard Robe, adding Shadow World jumps, three anchored destinations, and resource-collecting shadows 434.
- Arranges its evolution within the Tree of Life’s Shadow World projection, producing an additional enhancement when the robe and staff are used together 434.
- Explicitly states that repairing the robe does not mean he can repair the Godslaying Staff 434.
- Trains apprentices and successfully directs New Earth’s logistics 426.
- Uses the Shadow Plane’s laws to help a Snow Elf overcome cultivation barriers and reach Level Three 684.
- Later mobilizes world power against Supreme Lords and seals the plane’s spatial passages 983 984.
