Emerald Swans possess exceptionally concentrated life force but are extremely vulnerable when young. Other Soul Beasts hunt them as nourishing prey, while human Soul Masters prize their Soul Rings and Soul Bones. Repeated hunting expeditions and the battles fought to protect them nearly drive the species to extinction 284.

Bi Ji spends her youth hiding in secluded caves. Despite her own vulnerability, she devotes three days and nights to healing a dying young Soul Beast whose mother has been killed. The effort nearly exhausts her and leaves her exposed to predators, but the youngster’s father finds them and pledges to protect her. More beasts whom she heals voluntarily become her followers, providing food, standing guard, and driving away threats 284.

Losses and Peace Efforts

Over the centuries, Bi Ji loses companions to human hunters, Heavenly Tribulation, and territorial warfare between Soul Beasts. Among them are an Earth Bear killed for his Soul Ring and Soul Bone, a Wind Spirit Fox destroyed by the final lightning bolt of his hundred-thousand-year tribulation, and a Dark Gold Terrorclaw Bear who dies fighting an invading Ferocious Beast. Her inability to save them despite her healing power shapes her determination to end the cycle of killing 285.

As a representative of the Star Dou Great Forest’s Ferocious Beasts, she negotiates with humanity’s leading experts. Human dependence on Soul Rings and Soul Bones prevents an agreement. Huo Yuhao’s founding of the Spirit Pagoda offers apparent hope of obtaining Soul Rings without hunting; when he and his companions request an Emerald Swan’s Soul Ring to treat Mu En, Bi Ji offers a ten-thousand-year-old junior of her own species 285.

She later bitterly regrets that decision. Seeing Soul Beasts confined, exploited for Soul Rings, and driven toward extinction makes her question whether trusting Huo Yuhao’s promise helped enable their predicament 286.

Long before meeting Bai Yushan, Bi Ji periodically assumes human form to treat the sick and wounded. She does so neither for payment nor to discover humanity’s weaknesses, but to understand human possibilities. Her experiences convince her that human creativity and progress are indispensable to the world—and that the future of Soul Beasts may lie within human society rather than isolation in the forests 15.

Bi Ji is compassionate even when kindness places her at risk. The rescue that earns her first protector begins with her refusal to abandon a dying youngster, despite having little ability to defend herself. Her care for Bai Yushan is similarly practical: she feeds him, mends his clothes, tends his injuries, and offers the warmth of a home 284 294 317.

Her sympathy for Soul Beasts does not translate into indiscriminate hatred of humanity. She recognizes humans as complex and contradictory, admires their achievements, and rejects the idea that restoring the Soul Beast Clan requires humanity’s destruction. This distinguishes her outlook from the more optimistic Ferocious Beasts who expect the Silver Dragon King’s awakening alone to restore their former glory 15.

She is perceptive about talent and appreciates Bai Yushan’s strength and fighting instincts even while restraining him. She also finds his defiance amusing, particularly his habit of calling every electrified punch and kick “Lightning Rushing Thunder Fist” 11.

Her attachment to him becomes intensely personal and possessive. She longs to remain close to him but fears that revealing her Soul Beast identity will make him reject her.
