Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 8=3 — Conventional Demon God | 443, 490 | The usual Demon God state. Flesh and soul have reached godhood, granting access to immense magical knowledge and Phase manipulation, but spiritual sublimation remains incomplete. |
| 9=2 — Perfect Demon God / Magus | 443, 500, 652 | Achieved through the unification of body, soul, and spirit via a Symbolic Ritual. This corrects the fundamental flaw of ordinary Demon Gods and allows transcendence beyond the standard 8=3 state. |
Nature and Origin
A Demon God is the ultimate endpoint of magic: a human who has completed astronomical preparations, undergone a symbolic ascension ritual, and become inseparable from a mythology. Whether the mythology preceded the individual or was formed around them becomes meaningless after their ascension. 633 799
Ascension typically requires symbolic self-mutilation or self-sacrifice to discard mortal limitations. Othinus offered an eye to the Spring of Wisdom, the Monk starved himself into a mummified corpse, and Roy was nailed to a cross as part of their respective rituals. 735 799
Most Demon Gods are fundamentally incomplete. Their bodies and souls have entered the realm of godhood, but their spirits have not achieved the final sublimation needed for the rank of 9=2. This flaw leaves them unable to attain the Dao, preserve their original desires indefinitely, or fully correct the distortions caused by their own power. 443 490 497
Appearance
Demon Gods have no single physical form. Their appearances reflect the mythology, ritual, and symbolic identity through which they attained godhood. To ordinary humans, their forms can range from beautiful humanoids to incomprehensible horrors. 484 492 736
- Othinus appears as a petite, one-eyed blonde woman in a witch hat and revealing black clothing. 356 437
- Monk resembles a dried mummy in ornate purple-and-gold robes, carrying a massive golden sword. 728 731
- Niangniang appears as a petite girl with a bluish complexion and Taoist attire. 484 804
- Zombie resembles a stitched voodoo doll with corpse-like skin, black eyes, and torn clothing. 736 804
- Some Demon Gods possess forms too abstract or beautiful for mortals to perceive normally, particularly those tied to Greek mythology. 493
Abilities & Skills
Phase Manipulation
A Phase is the practical culmination of Demon God magic. Rather than manually constructing rituals, symbols, and formulas, a Demon God can alter a Phase to directly produce the desired result. 490 682
- Can alter physical laws, social concepts, fate, and the structure of reality. 437 791
- Can create worlds, destroy worlds, resurrect the dead, reverse rules, or make impossible outcomes real. 22 490
- Can alter mortals so completely that conflict may be avoided before it begins. 492
- Cannot directly determine a battle between Demon Gods, as Phases have little effect on beings of the same rank. 492 733
Formula Access and Magical Knowledge
A Demon God's soul contains an immense body of magical knowledge. When one wills an outcome, they can retrieve or construct a formula capable of fulfilling it. 490
- Their omnipotence is magical rather than innate; it depends on formulas, knowledge, and the use of Phases. 490 682
- Demon Gods specialize in the mythology tied to their identity, such as Taoist treasures, Buddhist reincarnation, or Christian miracles. 389 492
- Possessing knowledge does not guarantee comprehension. Ordinary Demon Gods can use vast knowledge, but still need personal effort and spiritual growth to understand it fully. 490
- They can be limited by unfamiliar systems and worlds beyond their existing knowledge, including the powers of Evil Gods. 550 690
Mythological Authority
When fighting another Demon God, conventional Phase manipulation is insufficient. They instead rely on the strongest formulas, authorities, and symbols of their own mythological systems. 580 733
- Taoist Demon Gods can manifest legendary magical treasures and weapons. 492
- The Monk used Buddhist earth manipulation and the Six Paths of Reincarnation. 732 733
- Othinus wields Norse magic and the Lord of the Gods' Spear. 356 360
- A Demon God's mythological techniques become capable of destroying the material universe when wielded at full power. 733
Reality-Destroying Presence
A complete Demon God's existence is too vast for an ordinary world to bear. Their descent alone can erase matter, life, fate, and causality. 491 492
- The presence of eight Demon Gods caused a world to collapse completely. 492
- A serious Demon God can annihilate all things with a casual strike. 491
- Demon Gods may divide or weaken themselves to enter a material world without immediately destroying it. 498
- Infinite division allows a Demon God to reduce their impact on reality, but creates the possibility of death by making them incomplete. 498 729
Immortality and Vulnerability
Demon Gods are normally functionally immortal, and conflicts between them tend to be endless stalemates. 492 495
- Injuring a complete Demon God is usually meaningless, as they cannot be conventionally killed. 683
- A weakened, divided, or otherwise incomplete Demon God can be killed by a sufficiently prepared anti-Demon God weapon or a superior being. 434 729 735
- Spiritual erosion, isolation, and the loss of desire can lead to a Demon God's eventual demise despite their immortal bodies. 726 730
- Demon Gods can also be defeated through information gaps, sealed formulas, or powers that transcend their mythological framework. 734 781
Limitations
The Baseline Problem
Demon Gods can add to or destroy Phases, but they cannot reduce or reshape the world's original baseline once it has been distorted. 491
Repeated Phase manipulation can therefore permanently damage a world. Several Demon Gods withdrew into a hidden world after realizing that they could not restore the reality they had altered. 491 633
Incomplete Spiritual Sublimation
The standard 8=3 state grants overwhelming power without completing the spirit. As a result, ordinary Demon Gods eventually lose their original motivations, struggle to comprehend humanity, and cannot reach the Dao. 490 497
Isolation and Mental Erosion
Demon Gods retain remnants of human social needs despite their divinity. Loneliness, endless time, and the void can erode their wills and provoke eccentric or destructive behavior. 490 726 738
- Many crave attention or companionship despite acting detached from mortals. 738
- Their personalities vary greatly, but they are rarely truly indifferent. 738
- Othinus feared the empty void left after destroying her world and eventually abandoned her power because of it. 490 692
Personality
Demon Gods are not inherently good or evil. They stand above ordinary morality and often regard the world as a fragile object that should not be broken unnecessarily, rather than something deserving compassion. 485
Their immense power allows them to fulfill nearly any desire, leaving many with diminished ambition, poor urgency, or a tendency to treat events as games. 437 494 628 However, each retains personal obsessions: the Monk sought to save all beings, Othinus pursued an Understander and a new world, while others desired freedom from their flawed existence. 493 735 738

Story Role / Major Arcs
Othinus and Eternal Return
The existence of Demon Gods is first demonstrated through Othinus, who destroys the universe and repeatedly traps Roy in cycles of destruction through her overwhelming power. Roy's Eternal Return prevents permanent defeat, allowing him to learn from each loop. 356 357 358
The Hidden World and Roy's Ascension
Other Demon Gods emerge from their hidden world after Othinus destroys its concealment. Their descent reduces reality to a void, and Roy confronts multiple Demon Gods while preparing his Symbolic Ritual. 490 491 492 495
The New World and the Monk's Death
After Roy reaches a state beyond ordinary Demon Gods, he changes the world's structure so complete Demon Gods can descend. The Monk attacks Academy City, but Roy seals his Buddhist formulas, destroys his body, and restores the damage caused by their battle. 731 733 734 735
Nyarlathotep's Interference
Nyarlathotep manipulates Persephone and sends the other Demon Gods into a dream-like new world, demonstrating that even Demon Gods can be deceived by forces beyond their knowledge. 756
